Ralf presser against Arsenal

There's been a lot of talk about players downing tools but to be honest Ralf has been talking for weeks like he'd given up the season. He's saying all the right things about the club structure and such, but he's not done much to motivate the team judging by his interviews.
How do you motivate players that have downed tools?

The liverpool game was the last straw. He saw them go out there and simply not do anything from the game plan. Now it's total war.
The team and how they played were disgusting but RR didn't do himself any favors by picking a horrible lineup with Dalot on the left and Maguire as captain, among other things.

Thank God for this man. I just pray the club is listening.

I mean, he is absolving himself from all the blame obviously, but I love that he is in full barrage mode.
The club has been a dumpsterf fire for nine years. I don't really think he sees it as absolving himself.

Can't wait till he fecks off to to his 6 days a month consultancy role.

Ralf comes across pretty toxic to me but a lot of you aren't ready to have an honest conversation about that. He's failed horrendously as manager here but doesn't waste a second in isolating himself from the mess.

I kinda see where you're coming from with this. With games still to play, and at times an outside chance at 4th (which must have been the club's primary target for him) he's repeatedly been publicly stating that the players aren't good enough (mainly focusing on effort/fitness/tactically/professionalism).

Our players will really hate that, but they've absolutely no right to complain. Ole was the polar opposite and took bullets for them week in week out to protect them from criticism, but that wasn't enough for them either and they badly let him down too.

They definitely don't respond to the stick and eventually get bored of the carrot, so it's right that they have to go. Sadly for us there were so many games left to play and the chance of top 4, which makes it worse having to watch such a prolonged run of games of a team full of passionless players.

I do suspect RR is completely out of his depth here, and a lot of his public honesty is to deflect from his own inability to get any sort of run out of this team. It's more than likely hurting us this season, but laying bare the problem players who's dedication changes day to day.

That said, EtH may well be giving a number of them a fresh chance when he arrives, a clean slate, and so tanking this season to protect RR's reputation (if that's the case) might not achieve anything particularly positive this season or going forward.

Yeah, probably. Although if we also look at it from the perspective that he could have said all this behind closed doors with Murtough and others fully smashing players in the same manner the small part of me is wondering why is he doing it in the media. What more does that achieve aside from the fact that he looks better in it.

But don't get me wrong, I like the man. If those sorry bunch won't even run, let alone play some nice football expose them.

Savage. Feels like he is going to distant himself from united after the season.

He already said between the lines that our recruitment policy is shambles. Meaning he thinks most of the team is, well shit.

Also, if they won't run like crazy for him he will be even more ruthless going by his reputation.

I have enjoyed Ralf’s interactions with the media. His honesty and lack of any PR filter makes for a good listen.

But one takeaway I have is that he isn’t a coach or hasn’t been for a good number of years.

Which makes it difficult for him to get his tactics working on the training field. Resulting in him giving up on the players and concluding the club needs a brand new starting eleven. Which is something that is never going to happen.

The club and players' reputations are already in the gutter. It cannot fall much lower. We had ex players telling ETH to run away from the job, that these players would get him sacked and the board were clueless.
Imo, these players have got off lightly. He has repeatedly criticised them as a group but until Bailly(who doesn't even play), he had never singled any player out.
I also think he has found it easy to criticise the structure because we are a meme of a club and something the club have probably already accepted, so he feels comfortable saying it. And again, he hasn't been overly critical or called any member of the club out. He has only said we need to improve.
I think he's been very honest but also very respectful.

I'm actually sensing a positive change from the news that the two scouting heads who played a major part in our failed recruitment in last 9 years now have stepped down / been laid off .

That is in line with Ralf's saying of "a heart-open surgery" that needed to perform to make the rebuild happen: to get top people in those areas that support the team building.

Ralf has hinted it quite clearly that the quality of manager was not the main issue or at least will not be one as we have recruited the best possible out there. We now have seen Murtough taking steps to realize what have been suggested from Ralf to strengthen those other areas like scouting and recruitment.

We still have to suffer till the end of this season, but the future seems slowly shedding some light.

He has added the caveat of transforming the team over a number of windows. He's not deluded. I can bet this team will be very different in 18 months.

It's pretty clear that bridges have been burned in terms of players/manager relationship. He is not going to get them to magically turn it around because there is a 1 in a million chance of top 4. 100% of the time this situation results in a sacked manager in a normal permanent manager scenario.

The main thing for us is that this is the 3rd time that essentially this group of players have done this, and in this case, the guy they are doing it to is going upstairs in some capacity next season, and ready to tell our incoming manager in great detail about all the issues he's faced trying to implement a somewhat similar system to what he will be trying to implement.

Can't disagree with any of that, just questioning his inner motives to fully go to the press. But since our players didn't deserve anything less, zero complaints from me.

I think the players have had the motivational and support management tactics for most of the year under Ole and at the beginning of Ralfs reign and half of them still look unmotivated and put in half hearted displays. So I think continuing to sugar coat things and saying they are good guys, etc would just get us the same results. Calling them out is the right way to go, lets see which players have pride and want to not only fight for this shirt but also their pride.

clear from that that he had no role in ETH appointment. which is an absolute joke. I know he is busy preparing the team... but what did we actually bring him in for. he ius a worse coach than ole and a brilliant upstairs football person by all accounts. we keep him busy prepping the team to be poor while we make big decisions upstairs and away from him

This is so true. I suspect it became clear to the board that RR will speak his mind when it comes to manager and player recruitment which they felt would be too football focused for a club like ours where profit and dividends trump everything else.

correct. i’ve been reliably informed that a lot of the plot and dialogue of billy elliot was based on interactions between pogba and ralf. pogba just wanting to dance and ralf being all “dancing is for poofs. lads play football.”

I think you guys have a misunderstanding of the meaning of "adviser". He has said he told the board that ETH was the best possible candidate. Also one would expect an advisor to provide insight in what they should look for in a new manager and what sort of structure to have.
If you think Rangnick should have been in the room while ETH was interviewed, I disagree.
Rangnick is talking about his role going forward not what has gone on before. I can bet my house that ETH will want feedback from Ralf.

That works so well. Sad thing for us is we've a selection of players that fit the dancer role!

Just listening to part 2 now, brutal truths from Ralf. Hope he stays and has a role of influence behind the scenes.

Just walks into Ten Haag's first meeting with John Mutrough completely un-announced, boombox in hand to eminem's machine gun kelly.

Rashford just hit me on a text
Last night Trent left stood marks on his neck
Pogba, your’re injured again? I'm perplexed
Maguire’s re-posting norwich passing clips, another weird flex
Damn, these players can’t press or attack
Was watchin' class of 92, on my NordicTrack
Donny I forgot to recall you back
Here's 14 players to sell, to close that 24 point gap
Juan, Wan, Ron
Listen, man, Ralf isn't mad
But how you gonna play vs arsenal when you can’t even run
This summer clear out has just begun.

(yeah i'm bored)
This is amazing. Bravo!
Read it in an Eminem voice too.

I think it's one of the reasons he never really got one of the very big jobs earlier in his career. He is simply too honest to the press and tells things like he seems them instead of answering in platitudes. While the press of course loves this, I'm pretty sure a lot of his players and the higher ups would prefer a less candid approach.

I get what you are saying. I think Ralf should have been active in picking the next manager. sounds like he had a passive role. he gave his opinion but didn't speak to ETH so obviously his opinion wasn't very important

Can you see Ralf over the next two years being blamed like Woodward or having his house attacked? I can't. He won't be in a figurehead type role, in fact he won't be visible at all I bet.

I doubt he'll even be living in the UK. He's only doing a few days a month isn't he?

It's a sweet job.

Maguire has been sent a death threat.

Enough said.
