That's not Liverpool though is it, that's the media asking ex-players looking for a story. SKY have news updates every hour, they are always out there searching for that 'BREAKING NEWS'

True but equally I don't think Liverpool object to their club legends and ambassadors giving rave reviews about how great the club is and only an idiot would leave there whilst completely ignoring someone like Suarez for example has gone on to potentially win a treble 1 season after leaving the club! The love in of Liverpool from the media is painful to listen to, it's not all Liverpool's fault you're right but they definitely milk it. I've not heard 1 genuine reason why Sterling is better off at Liverpool except "he'll sit on the bench wherever he goes" the reality is he won't. A team like City is crying out for him, what's different from City to Liverpool? He'll get more money, win stuff and play. It's a no brainer for him, he's not a Liverpool fan and has no real affiliation to the club. If he wants to go and further his career and has confidence in himself fair enough.

It's revisionist history all the time with these Liverpool legends that grates the most. Sterling was huge last season, they had the "SAS" etc and now that he's going he's nowhere near good enough for City or Chelsea? It's ridiculous.

Again, it's not all Liverpool you're right but your current club captain has basically said the same as these club legends....I'm sure Liverpool had a part to play in that.

Yep, definitely. Safest bet going. I find this whole situation hilarious for a number of reasons. Mainly the complete lack of legitimate reasons that ex-Liverpool pundits can give for him to actually sign a new deal. Instead they'll just call him names.

You even had Heskey chiming in, calling him "immature". The same Heskey who left Leicester for a bigger club at 22.

I don't particularly care for Sterling, or want him at United, but this situation just highlights how Liverpool, their fans, and the media are unwilling to accept that they're not a top dog in England any more.

It's doing my head in that.

The sheer amount of ex Liverpool players and Liverpool fans in the media is crazy and they've seemingly all took it in turns to come out and say the same old shite about why Sterling should stay for his "footballing development".

Is having to play with a load of dross really going to help him? Or having to play as a lone striker or wing back and even full back? All roles he's had to play this season because Rodgers fecked up his transfer business in the summer.

It's a shame Liverpool didn't fancy Memphis. I'm sure he'll be gutted that this saga didn't unfold a few weeks ago. He's missed on out on that Liverpool move, as Liverpool didn't need/want him.

But I'm sure Oscar or Sanchez will push for a move to Anfield, now that there's a spot for them.

You are telling me there were not United fans on here giving Rooney stick for wanting to leave (for a 2nd time)?

No I have no evidence but I can't believe he wasn't getting some flak.

EDIT - didn't they boo him on the celebration bus after winning the league!?

What happened with Rooney, is that fans were upset he asked to leave, but recognised that not only was he was one of our best players, but that he was also a complete cnut.
The second contract situation however was a complete fabrication by Ferguson and an attempt to manage him out of the club, for what ever reason that would be.
What Liverpool fans have done here, is a complete revision of Sterling and his current ability, potential ability, attitude etc.

They seem to forget, he isn't a Liverpool youth product, he isn't a local lad, he was snapped up from QPR at quite a late age, he has no connection or ties with Liverpool other than they gave/offered him a job.
He doesn't want to work for Liverpool any more, thats all there is to it.

Some ex-players do get over defensive when their old club are in the limelight. Especially one's born in the City. But yes you do make some good points.

Sterling's attitude, what he has said haven't done him any favours. Plus the fact he hasn't exactly been in good form either.

Fan's love the club a lot more than players do - which is why they often react in a negative way when they want to leave, especially given the money they are on.

How do we all know that this isn't just a conspiracy from Tony Fernandez to get QPR their 25% sell on fee.

As we all know, everyone is against LFC.

Sooo they have cancelled the meeting tomorrow :( I was looking forward to the aftermath!

It's about standing up and telling the agent where to go - which really is what many football fans would want clubs to do.
standing up for what? thats not how football works. IF a player wants to go, he will go. If said fans had a company offering them a bigger paying job with other perks they dont get at their current job, they'd leave that(current) job in the blink of an eye. So i dont understand the hypocrisy behind the outrage over Sterling.

One thing we might agree on though is that Sterling's agent is a massive idiot for leaking things to the media.

Everyone blaming the agent again, maybe Sterling actually wants to go to a club where he can win the league.

I do agree that bale isn't a good fit for our current style but the gulf in quality between him and sterling is too much.
I'd say the opposite - the gulf in class isn't that big*, and it makes more sense to invest in Sterling because IMO he has higher ceiling. He's more adaptable, and can play in multiple positions.

*I really rate Bale but I think he's very specialized winger, in a way that in right setup he can be devastating. He will not be 80m winger in the system van Gaal wants us to play.

Both of them can play on either side but are better off playing on the other side and cutting in. We have Depay for that role on the left so it'd make more sense to go for a right winger.

I disagree that the gulf isnt big atm, Bale is superior by quite a margin but I totally agree that his style is nowhere close to being suited to Van Gaal's current system which is why I am one of those that dont want him here. I don't know if I'd pick Sterling among the 2 though, it'd be close as the one being clearly better wouldnt suit the system as much as the inferior player would.

How can everyone be blaming the agent again, if you're not? :)

"I think Liverpool have acted in an unprofessional way handling my contract renewal."

"HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT, WE ARE CANCELLING TOMORROW'S MEETING!"

Sterling is overrated as feck but he's still on a different planet to Januzaj.
A bit off topic but I still believe Januzaj will become a better player.

I hope we do sign Sterling. We would be incredibly frightening with the pace and ability and it would be great seeing Liverpool fans reaction.

Embarrasing stuff, how are liverpool going to be able to attract players of a decent enough calibre to get them champions league football, when they constantly see their best players refusing to commit to the "project"

Either way he's a gobshite.
He was talking about his other one :wenger:, also it's not worse then her grammar

Liverpool are in a similar position to us with Rooney last season. With Rooney, we either had to get rid or make him the highest paid player in the league. Our poor form meant we had to pay over the odds - wages higher than he'd get anywhere else - to keep him.

Liverpool are going to have to do the same with Sterling. They'll need to give him 200k a week to keep him IMO. Even though he isn't worth that now, they need to make a clear statement that they're able to keep their best players.

I see it from Sterling's point of view but also from Liverpool's.

How often do we hear that a contract isn't worth the paper it's written on and read the debates over over whether the club or player holds holds the cards ?

Football is an odd one.

What other industry are employees 'bought' by one company from another ?

Shouldn't a footballer be allowed to simply resign ?

Some want to abolish 'transfer fees' but how else would the money filter down through the lower leagues.

It's a tough one and the Sterling case is hardly unique.

They cant keep him. I genuinely believe he'd refuse any contract they offered.
Tbh I would too, while he hasn't been an angel the club (or maybe their ex players, take your pick) have acted like clowns and basically made his position untenable.

If not because of money, not sure why he's not happy. He's their best player and the team is built around him. Maybe he simply just wants CL football and a realistic chance of winning the league. Maybe he lost believe when Suarez left.

Seriously?
The team isn't built around him for a start, he was playing full back against Fellaini when we played them FFS. He's managed by David Brent and has twats like Phil Thompson calling him an ungrateful prick and demanding that he shuts up and signs a new contract as if its perfectly reasonable and normal behaviour or any of their damn business.
After his first season the club decided to be cheap bastards and not improve his (relatively) pissy 25k contract. His 2nd best teammate is Jordan fecking Henderson

What in gods name would he have to be happy about?

But 5 Champions Leagues.

He's 20. He plays every game. Plays in Europe. Fans are great and love him. He's a big fish there. Great place to grow as a player.

What are the chances of him winning one at liverpool?

Think about it from his view - maybe city fire pellegrini and get guardiola or ancelloti next season. They need english players so they buy him, get a top tier midfielder (pogba?) to replace toure.
Then their defence clicks, just because. Kompany is capable of having a great season. Demichelles (?) had a good season, why not another? Mangala after his first season in a new league at a young age comes reasonably good.
Maybe they get lucky and win the champions league in his first season - stranger things have happened.
Or they dont and he works under pellegrini whos a pretty good coach and plays with silva and aguerro every day of the week.
Its not a bad trade off is it?
Thats one option.

Played 1 season in the CL and went out in the group stages...

Fans are booing him...

He's on course to escape a sinking ship. How's it a mess? A bigger mess would be tying himself down on a four year deal, and having all of the expectation on his shoulders as Liverpool continue to go nowhere and win nothing.

I don't think he's painted himself in glory, no matter who he is playing for. One thing that any supporter of any club wants to see from their players is a desire to do their best for the team and club. Not to come out and demand x amount of money and portray yourself as too big for the club. Especially when you've won nothing and are only 20 years old. Ridiculous carry on from Sterling and I think Liverpool should keep him and bench him for the next year.

Hang in there Raheem, don't give up now. Whatever you do, don't sign that new contract, listen to your agent, he know's what's best for. You won't win shite staying at that club even if you stay there for a decade. You will make up for the money that you may miss out for a year with a huge signing on bonus at your next club.

I wouldn't be happy publicly negotiating my salary in public, especially with the way that the Liverpool fans will take the bait. The clubs and the fans overplayed their hand trying to pressure him into extending his contract. Sometimes, trying to save money can be very expensive.

How much of that is him though? How much of it is his agent, and more to the point how much is Liverpool, its media connections and the manager who clearly doesnt like him very much?

Sterling wants to leave as he doesnt think he will ever win anything with Liverpool. Thats fairly simple and a valid reason for him to want out. All the talk of him being greedy and the rest is coming from the media.

Was that after all the "he's leaving" talk from his agent?

There were a few boo's at the award ceremony this week but mostly it was polite applause.

Many fan's can't afford to go to the game anymore, so I assume they are reading between the lines a little on a player already earning a fortune not wanting to sign for a club they have supported all their lives.

Rooney was booed also on the team bus celebrating the title win, I assume the same people who did that don't anymore once United threw a bucket-load of cash at him.
I am not sure Liverpool will do that but I still think the club may dig their heels in and hold him to his current contract. FSG won't take kindly to the stuff the agent is prattling on about.
