Rage Against The Machine For Christmas No.1

So is all the money that "The Rage":smirk: are making from this going to charity? or are they just taking advantage of the situation and lining their pockets.

Where does it all end though? Do we just keep going until the only decent music that can be heard is Live at a concert or something? You say there's no money in music for the majority of musicians and how could there be when it's being strangled by crap.

I think one of the big things I noticed was in the "Where has all the good music gone" thread. People kept answering there is good music you just have to look for it. No one had to look for Led Zep, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Joni Mitchell, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors, Eric Clapton, The Eagles etc it was right there to be heard because we didn't have the culture we have now. Of course there is still excellent bands about but they'll never be remembered 30/40 years from now.

You've answered your own question really. Where does it all end ? It doesn't. Some people believe in a circle of life and some people believe in one long continues line. Will it all come back around where purity is at the heart of it all ? Who knows. I doubt it, but then again nobody expected the early 90's to churn out such ground breaking music after the 80's cheese. And before anyone goes for my head, yes I realise there were some classics in the 80's but for the most part it was a little bit of a dodgy era.

Nobody had to go look for those bands due to the nature of the time though. There was different mass communication, and lets not forget that Rock n Roll was very new to ears.

Also, image was important back then, but it was a different type of image. Lets not fool ourselves into thinking that image didn't matter back then because it did. One might argue that the hippy movement was an image, and if you check the hears and souls of every man you're going to find pretenders in every era. I'm sure back then the "real" hippies were shouting out about those who sort of just drifted along with the whole scene.

These days......I feel.......people have gotten sick hearing what they perceive to be the same churned out crap, so certainly in the commercial pop world "music" has taken a back step, and image has taken to the front. It's no longer about 4 smelly geezers on a stage playing incredible tunes, it's about lights, dancers, image, sexy, fashion, hair-dos, sex-tapes, celeb......

It's just different these days for a variety of reasons. It's sad, but I bet those who grew up in the 60's were saying the same thing about the early 90's

I hope this urges Rage to get back together for one last tour of the UK....I think its the least they can do if its succesfull

I think it would be hilarious to have the song as a No. 1 Christmas song purely for how un-christmassy it is. It'd be fun to hear it on the radio Christmas day, but like someone else pointed out above, it is the charts at the end of the day and they don't really matter. Anyone who knows anything about music knows that the charts are a pile of shite. They just serve as a handy divide. They make it easier to separate types of music fans. Like I'm not about to start a music conversation with someone who loves chart music. It does the hard work for me and works it out. And yes I can generalise. Suck eggs if you disagree

They didn't instigate it!

Do they even know what's going on?

Nah it's nothing to do with them but they'll still be making a tidy profit.

Well its not exactly their idea, its not a new song or anything.

Really? I am sure they are more then aware and had some part to play. Couldn't a song with the lyrics "Simon Cowell is a cnut" have been released instead, maybe to the tune of "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer"?

Even I would've bought that....there's always next year I suppose.

Who knows.....knowing Rage they'll probably put the money into some radical political movement in South America

You're all backing the wrong horse here.

Coming Home by The Soldiers with all all royalties going to charity will take it.

Yeah and for that reason I'm enclined to believe that Rage won't get to number 1. Would be good though.

Chances are Rage won't make it to No. 1. The reason being is that on top of the 20 million buying the X-Factor song you also have a large portion being downloaded by the music industry. It's a forced No. 1.

Now I'll hold my hand up and admit that I don't know for certain that they will do this on Joe's song, but I do know in the past they have used this trick. This is when chart music slowly started to become irrelevant, and today chart music actually is irrelevant. It doesn't define how good a song actually is

first and fifth? Are there two versions? It'll never bloody get to number one if people are splitting their purchases between an album version and a 'clean' version!!

I checked play.com about 2 weeks ago and there was only 1 version of the song. Now there are 2 ? That's is well suspect if you ask me. Sure all it would take it a quick phone call to play.com, a bit of money involved and an arrangement to put 2 versions of the same song up and that's that buggered

When was the last time the same song was at number 1 for anything longer than maybe two weeks?

Not sure man. I gave up on charts years ago. I remember back in the late 80's when chart music actually mattered 'China in your hand' by T'pau was at number for something like 16 weeks

Amazing how times have changed

Hopefully though it won't matter what version it is, it's the same song. Would be odd to have the same song twice unless it was a clearly different version by another artist or a remix. Does just look like a "clean" and an unedited version so hopefully they'll add the two together, wouldn't make much sense or we could have the same song in several positions in the chart.

I admire your optimism but it won't happen, didn't that hallelujah track last year have the top three positions with 2 and 3 both being Jeff Buckley versions?

In the Play charts, "Killing in the name of" is first and fifth.

This website tracks the downloads 24/7. Joe is winning at the momet.

Just took the time to look who actually who X-Factor, isn't he just another Gareth Gates presumably without the stutter.

Miley Cyrus seems to have the exact same song within the top 30:rolleyes:

Tbh from that list I would want Journey to be no 1

Only 1 and 2 were Hallelujah. I don't think Jeff was in it twice, can't find anything that says yay or nay on that though.

It is not unlikely that I imagined it! I seem to recall the same song was in the charts 3 times but maybe not

Good, I don't so much mind having totally made things up in my head, but when it's related to pop charts I'd be a little worried

How many sales are needed to reach No 1, on average?

Well according to one of the sites involved in the whole campaign it doesn't matter which one you buy. They both count as one. So 50k of one and 50k of the other stands for 100k sales towards the No. 1 spot

They're all in bed with one another anyway starman. There are a big group of them all scratching one another backs and Miley Cyrus is smack bang in the middle of it all. The little fecking toe rag. I hate how a 17 year old multi millionaire has a say what's played on the radio. God damn them all
