Rage Against The Machine For Christmas No.1

I know little about all this, having not read this thread, and not paying particularly high interest to the charts these days. I've gathered there's an internet campaign to stop Cowells X factor winner from topping the charts. And that they've chosen a song by Rage Against the Machine, who also happen to be on Sony record label, to do it. I know they were successful, although this X factor winner will be top next week. Have I got that right?

Anyway, I heard the Rage song on TOTP Christmas Special earlier, and it was dire. I admire what people were trying to do, but in the end they seem to have sparked life into the existing order of the music industry, and have succeeded in a crap song on a major label making it to number 1

I'm going to exert my own form of 'people power', and go back to not giving a crap about who's top of the charts at Christmas. I only found out yesterday that Hallelujah was last years topper!

Me to, and it was absolutely fecking dire. However, the full uncensored version is brilliant.

My opinion on it was, it was nothing about giving Sony or Simon Cowell more or less money, they are rich no matter what happened, nothing will be changing that, it was basically sticking 2 fingers up at him for monopolising the music scene, the same songs over and over again, hyping up his artist for 6 months to win xmas number 1 and giving no-one else a chance at what used to be an exciting race. IMO the rage song is 50 times better than joes, but i guess that is just down to what you like.

Brad listen to the full song, not that censored bullshit, though having said thatm if you didnt like the censored version you probably wont like the rest.

I'm not a big fan of metal, but Killing in the name is a great song.

Yeah erm, Rage arn't Metal. Though it depends on what you class metal as

I always looked at rage as the Fathers of Newmetal. Scary thing is I remember prancing around Jillys when this first came out.

Is everybody doing the same again next year?

We should be doing it every week and not complaining about the state of the charts! If people don't like it then start buying music that you do like instead of downloading it.

That song came out in '94 when the rap/rock crossover was in full flow. Anthrax and Public Enemy where arguably the first to do it. They're a rock band basically. Definitely not metal or nu metal.

Anthrax played with it, as did public enemy. It was Rage whos whole theme was punk meets D&B meets metal. I thought mentioning Jillies would have got some of the elder statesmen going.

RATM is funky rock, it's not really metal imo. I've no idea who or what Jillies is? I though when you said Jillies you meant pyjamas for some reason haha. Anyway, i keep getting dragged in arguments over genre's and its tedious. They're a great band! Lets leave it there :D

More than happy to, also wasn't arguing, justchating. Jillies Rock World on Oxford St in Manchester. Before they sold off half of it.

/Facepalm. Though I suppose its abit harsh of me to expect everyone to know Metal inside out.

Metal as we know it originates from the likes of Black Sabbath, Bathory etc. New Metal or 'Nu-metal' is NOT metal and is instead some mainstream harsh sounding rock music thats mostly quite shit, examples include Slipknot and Korn (who probably gave birth to the genre)

RATM are neither metal nor are they Nu-metal, they're a unique hybrid of funk, rock and rap.

Jesus relax. It must be hard to type whilst riding that High Horse.

its a shite song that's number one by default. Sadly it's not the first shite number one and won't be the last because of greedy feckwits messing about

Yeah yeah I know they're not exactly metal but you know what i mean.

Linkin Park are Nu-metal, they are very simmilar to Rage.

To be fair, Linkin Park are nothing like Rage, other than having an MC.

What amused me about this were people buying the RATM in protest to all the "sheep" buying the XFactor song. Hmmmm.

To be fair though, it was a wonderful publicity stunt from RATM. Shame it's a shit song. The funniest thing is now most of their fans will probably stop liking them because they'll become popular and mainstream. You know the sort of music fan i mean "they used to be good before they became famous." feckin' students. :)

Nah you can't say the song is shit because it clearly isn't. You probably just mean that you just don't like it. Also, it wasn't a publicity stunt by RATM to the best of my knowledge. I was under the impression it was all started by 2 fans somewhere in England

You do realise RATM were a 'mainstream' band in the 1990's? Its not like this is the first time they've been in the charts. Kinky addressed the other stupid comments you've made.

Potato, I'd be surprised if they went mainstream. I'd be surprised if they even released a new album.

It wasn't in protest to people being 'sheep', it was in protest to regurgitated poncey ballad bollocks taking number 1 spot every year courtesy of some shite reality show.

RATM didn't start this movement, it was started on facebook. RATM rightly supported it, and don't think they needed the publicity either, they would still sell out if they toured now.

None of their fans will stop liking them because of this, they've always been popular and had lots of mainstream success in the 90's.

HAs anyone mentioned how much money Sony made?

Is it also true that Cowell owns shares in Sony, and therefore profited greatly from RATM's number? I'm sure i heard that somewhere.

No Sony own Cowells company Synco. So they made all the money this year.

The money really wasn't the point, them guys will be filthy rich no matter what happened, it was just about the song getting there.

This is what most people dont seem to comprehend about the campaign, it was never about financial boycotts.

Joe is number one now. Meh, we did our bit.

I was suprised that RATM still held on to the no2 spot though - not sure who exactly is still buying it seeing as the campaign acheived its objective already

I guess there are a lot more people who had never heard the song until last week than I imagined.

Yeh that's what surprised me - I expected Killing in the Name to just drop out of the charts entirely!

Did you guys now that Rage are contracted to Sony, meaning that Simon Cowell will still make a lot of money? I'm a clever fecker I am.:smirk:

AH UH! Wrong. Someone else explain, I can't be arsed.

And the facebook campaign has raised £60,000 so far for shelter. Good or bad outcome?
