Rafael van der Vaart has failed to command a regular place

Van der Vaart, who represented Netherlands at the World Cup finals, could be surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu as Real have signed Mesut Ozil, Angel Di Maria and Sergio Canales to play in advanced midfield roles this summer.

While the former Ajax and Hamburg star recently said he does not want to leave the club, the prospect of a move to Old Trafford has forced him to reconsider his position.

"I could never play for another club in Spain and the truth is that if you are leaving Real Madrid, there is only one club you can join that is not a step down - and that's Manchester United," Van der Vaart told the Daily Express.

"They are a huge club and if the reported interest they have in me turns out to be true, then I would really have to sit down and listen.

"If Manchester United could offer me first-team football with the situation as it is at Madrid, it would be very hard to turn down. Alex Ferguson is a great coach and I would never think about joining a team where I didn't believe I could win things, so all of a sudden that limits your choices.

"At Manchester United you know success is likely and that's a big factor for me at this stage of my career. "If [Real boss] Jose Mourinho makes it clear I won't play much, I see my future in English football."

sign him?

That is really nice to hear for a change because usually foreign players don't consider us on the same level as the Madrids and Barcas of this world.

If we really want to get our trophy back signing VDV is vital. Without him we aint good enough. With him we would be close to untouchables.

Great comments but wrong player. He didn't live up to the hype!!

Rearrange these six words to make a sentence.....

barrel the of bottom Scraping the:

Have we got any money to buy VDV or are we still looking for players of "value".

Deserves its own thread for that comment alone. We wont sign him though.

 I actually thought you were serious for a minute...

Seriously. If he is on the market less than 12 million UK. I would want United to sign him. For a bench player he would be perfect. And United wouldn't have to depend whether if Anderson, Carrick can get their form back or Gibson to step up

To be fair coming out and saying 'I want to leave Real Madrid, although no-one else is on the same level, I'd be happy to take a step down' wouldn't really help his career prospects. The good we can take for this is that he is a quality player and he clearly wants to play for us, hopefully the interest is real.

Hasn't he said the exact same things about other clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool?

Post of the day

Forget it, people grumble about berbatov being lazy....Vdv is much worse

Quality player who with Fletcher would add real bite to our midfield, and allow the likes of Anderson and Cleverly time to develop.

Don't need. Very Overrated.

Unless we sign him on some sort of deal where Sylvie Van Der Vaart has to pose naked in which case it would be mega value.

I'm not sure how big a success he would with in England, but I like the comments he's issued today. I wonder how much Real would wring out of us if we did make a bid. If Ozil cost 13 million, then I wouldn't pay more then 6 for VdV. It's Real who need to balance the books and get rid of potentially unhappy players.

For 5-6 million, or a loan move I'd be happy to see if VdV can come in and give us an extra creative edge in midfield.

If you can get a 27 year old Van Der Vaart for a fair bit less than you paid for Carrick then do it. He's far better than Carrick every was or will be.

Rubbish. Carrick is far more disciplined in defence. They aren't equal in my books. VdV has hardly done much to distinguish himself either. Carrick has accomplished more, and been consistently better in the last few years. VdV has struggled to break through at the top clubs he's been. VdV is a luxary player, Carrick on form is indispensable.

Ajax, key player. Star man at Hamburg. Scores more goals, is more creative, is better on the ball and actually played a significant role for Madrid in the last two years. More than carrick played for United in my opinion. Also he's more versatile.

Also has 83 caps for Holland who over the years have had some pretty good players in midfield.

Carrick, 3 years older, was good for spurs and was good for United without ever being great. Is now a bit part player behind Fletcher and Scholes and looks increasingly like his time is up. Has never established himself at internatonal level. Can't get a game ahead of Gareth Barry....

Doesn't defend.

Doesn't track back.

Makes Berbatov look industrious.

They play totally different roles. I can't see why VDV should replace Carrick.

No thanks, never saw what the big deal is with this guy. Overrated.

Agreed. He's been overrated for years. Just like Huntelaar, very limited in what he can do and what he's really good at. Not saying he's complete rubbish, just that he's not as great as some would advertise. Good player for Spurs, just another luxury player for us.

If he plays, Scholes won't get enough games. Anderson won't get enough games, and while VdV does have certain qualities, I don't think he's a long term player for us.

I'll be happy with a loan deal, anything more we should pass on. He's a Madrid reject we don't need.

He'll go and be a star for someone else. I just think United could do a lot worse than this guy. Sneijder was last years trash remember and Van Der Vaart with a renewed hunger can be this years Sneijder. Just my opinion, i think Van Der Vaart is very very talented and a player who if given the platform can be top class and United could give him that platform. He's a proven player too.
