As I've been saying for multiple years now, we need a new right back. Look at all that space left behind Raphael when he shoots, he keeps being out of position

I'd like to say something profound but every time I think of that goal :)

Great performance. Solid defensively, provided some excellent link up play down the right, and found a bit of time to hit a goal of the season contender.

We now know, without any doubt whatsoever, who our RB is for the next 6-8 seasons.

What I'd like to know is whether Fabio will be our LB.

Technique for that strike was magnifique, as that ponce Irwinwastheking would put it.

Also, about half a minute after his goal-line clearance he put a Beckhamesque peach of a cross from deep right onto RVP's left foot.

I hope he stays settled at United

he's exactly the kind of player Barca will be after soon to replace Alves

fantastic player with real quality going forward and getting better and better defensively

can grow a better moustache than Neville as well

That's until Madrid offer £40m and Rafael reveals it's his dream to play for them

Gotta love Guardian:

Oh wow! Oh wow, oh wow, oh wow. Rafael has scored the goal of his life. He has just belted one from about 25-yards out. It's an absolute screamer. He will never do anything better than that. Never. He should just walk off the pitch right now and never play football again.

I get the feeling it's just one of many belters to come.. in terms of attacking potential I don't think he's shown anything near what he is capable of due to being so focused on trying to nail down the defensive aspects of playing at right-back.

Agreed. I still think back to his pre-season games when he first came and how often he was taking players on, and his left foot curler which hit the bar or was tipped over. Its been pretty clear he's held back some of his attacking for the sake of keeping our shape

Rafael's already got a few gems, the volley against Arsenal, the left foot curler against Liverpool and now today's rocket. He's just an excellent footballer.

Definitely among the best right backs in Europe for me. He's been consistently doing the business against the toughest opponents we've faced here and abroad. You just look at his positioning, tackling, crossing, shooting, etc and it's all come on in leaps and bounds.

Dare I say it. He already looks quite complete as a player, and he's surely gonna improve further.

We knew that 2 years ago?

Did we? It was a reasonable suspicion, but I recall many here having their doubts about Rafael. And both Jones and Smalling have done quite nicely at RB too.

But yes, I thought we knew that two years ago but there were always doubts about his, say, rashness. It really wasn't a sure thing until a few months when he kept turning in great performances one after another. And he's been able to stay healthy, which was another concern two seasons ago.

Fergie fecking loves him too. His reaction to Rafa's goal says it all.

People on here have doubts about everyone after a bad game or two from the said player. Rafael's ability was never in doubt nor was his position at the club. His 'rashness' was actually 'inexperience' which in 2 years obviously has come a long way aside from his fitness, which again was half the reason why he wasn't playing like this say, maybe, last season.

Does Rafael look like the kind of bloke who wants to play in a tiki taka system?

People on here had their doubts about De Gea this season

Some people are slow to the party or are insulted that they were invited. Its been a sure thing for a long time

Imagine the praise he'd be getting if he was English. Kyle Walker got rave reviews last year but Rafael is way ahead of him.

It was pretty evident even from Rafael's debut that he was destined for big things.

Before the harsh sending off against Bayern Ribery was completely shut down and was frustrated because a little 19 year old Brazilian was dominating him.

He's had some rough moments but has always improved and put the moments of madness behind him.

This mentality shows me that he is the real deal and will be a star here for years.

Yes we did know, but some people, people like me knew it before.

I can't say I've ever had doubt about him. Yeah he's been rash, yes he's been inconsistent, yes he's made poor decisions, yes he's been over excited but you need to look past these with young players, you need to look at their qualities and he's always had qualities in abundance.

The goal summed him up. He was behind Taarabt when the ball came loose, but he sprinted for it because he wanted it more. He'll never strike a ball like that again in his career.

Agree it's one of our best deals ever, especially if he stays on for years. Such an exciting player, epitomizes the spirit of the club: feisty, gritty when he needs it, tough as nails, never say die attitude... And such a likeable lad. So glad he's fulfilling all his potential now, I think the 'prone to defensive errors' has been a bit of a lazy analysis for over a year now, but the consistency he's showing (helped by the fact he seems to not be picking up little injuries anymore) should settle debates. Best RB of the league without doubt.

Some folk on here were still slagging him off at the start of this season. I remember one poster tell me that he only makes so many tackles because he over runs the ball and then has to get it back :wenger: I have been wrong about a few players on here but Rafa is not one of them.

how is fabio fairing? I cant profess to having seen him play this season...

I have seen him play twice for them and he was excellent, entirely reminiscent of Rafael. It appears that he started slowly and got better, there are some posts in the Fabio thread from QPR fans expressing delight with some of his performances. He has picked up a couple of injuries again this season though. I am confident that he can reach Rafa's level, just that it might take a few years more.
