United sweat on Rafael injury after defender suffers dislocated shoulder again

Manchester United are waiting to see if Rafael Da Silva needs an operation after the young Brazilian defender dislocated his shoulder for the second time in two years.

Rafael, who dislocated the same joint in July 2009, suffered a recurrence of the injury in training on Thursday but it popped straight back into place.
The 21-year-old has been sent back to the specialist to see if surgery is required and to find out how much of the new season he is likely to miss.

Jesus, its like everytime this lad kicks the ball he hurts himself.

:(

If only we had someone who played in a similar style to him to cover.

Wouldn't Sir Alex have mentioned this on Friday's press conference? Some 24 hours after the injury allegedly occurred?

I'm surprised the two twins are still able to move. Bizarre how much of their time they have spent injured so far in their career.

If it came out, but as they say, "popped straight back into place", I can't imagine him being out for more than a few weeks.

Is Rafael actually injured seems to be only a Daily Mail rumour right now know one else is reporting this.

He's out for 10 weeks :(...

Rafael will be out of action for around 10 weeks after dislocating his shoulder in training ahead of the trip to West Brom.

The Brazilian full-back suffered the painful injury at Carrington and will be out for some time with Chris Smalling taking on the right-back role at The Hawthorns.

Rafael's twin Fabio is another option in the position so Sir Alex still has plenty of cover, even though the absence of the highly-rated 21-year-old is a blow for the champions.

Patrice Evra, Javier Hernandez, Antonio Valencia and Michael Owen also missed the opening game due to injury.

Hernandez is unlikely to resume training for another 10 days, the manager revealed on Friday afternoon.

#2 and #22 are still free for us. Wouldnt surprise me if we got someone in.
Can we recall delaet :p

For feck sake, to think Valencia might be our right back if anything happens to Smalling. :(

Didn't fabio suffer from a shoulder problems as well?

Why do you need so much time out after a disolacated shoulder?

Depends how much damage was done to the ligaments and the surrounding muscle tissue, you need to give it a chance to heal properly.

He did in a game against Southampton if I recall, this is a blow for Rafael, but he'll get over it. However, talking of the twins is today's game the first time that either of them have played 90 minutes for United and not needed some sort of treatment or to come off injured??

Unhappy that Rafa's out for a couple of months because he is clearly the best out and out right back at Old Trafford. Smalling can defend better but his delivery from the flank and all around attacking game isn't nearly as good as Rafael's while Rafael's defensive positioning and tackling is significantly better than Fabio's. Rafa seems plagued with injuries its so frustrating given that on days like today when Nani's a little off the boil you would usually be able to count on Rafa getting down the line and whipping good balls into the box.

So, how will the emergence of Smalling and Jones at RB effect Rafael when he comes back from injury?

In the long run I think SAF will see Rafael as the one, but in order to continue the development of Jones and Smalling while they're backups, I'm sure they will still get games at RB.

But also, SAF is ruthless, and Rafael won't get any games on sympathy. I'm concerned for Rafael that he may find his role quite diminished this season.

I wouldn't be too concerned tbh.If it is better for United that other players start of Rafael as RBs then so be it.
He's just terribly unlucky (or fragile) with injuries, he can't stay fit for prolonged periods.

I wouldn't worry. Rafael's a better RB than them both. He's certainly better there than Smalling. Jones could well go on to play their long term though.

He seems to love United, but I'd hate to see him leave for want of chances.

Though of course if anyone can manage it properly and keep everyone happy, it's Sir Alex.

I don't think it's much of an issue. We have 8 defenders for 4 spots. If he's fit he'll get plenty of games. It's up to him to keep his place.
