I don't find it offensive, I think it's just delusion. Why are we often so quickly qualifying our best of " best ... in the world" ? It's a genuine question

Had a solid game against Blackburn. He has obviously been told to not go forward too much and to be responsible defensively, while Rio has been told to keep an eye on the right flank and mop up any problems if necessary. To be fair to Rafael, almost no problems arose against Blackburn; as a matter of fact, some of the headers he won and the tackles he put in were great.

Rafael will be really great once he obtains more experience and becomes more defensively solid. Once he is able to go up and down the right flank (like Evra does on the left), he'll be a huge part of our attack. End product aplenty. The possibility is really exciting.

Anyone else feel he should be getting the nod when we play teams like Stoke? How is he going to learn to deal with such tactics in the coming years if JOS is given a start purely for his height?

I do not like to use potential or the future when talking about Rafael. He is already one of the best fullbacks in the world.

Not yet he isnt. There are probably 10 or so that are better than him due to experience and consistancy. However, hopefully people will stop talking rubbish about him being a liability when a player gets past him once or twice. They get past Evra, O'Shea, Brown, etc. too and usually the same people who complain about Rafael are the ones making out either Evra is the best left back in the world, or that Brown is the best right back in the league. Double standards because he's young and learnin' and therefore an easy target.

In a year's time I do think he will have made progress in that list of the best fullbacks though. I just think you're trying to be ahead of your time like normal

yes,and I felt that the last time we played them.Should be letting stoke worry about our attacking threats, rafael isn't bad in the air and can pass the ball better.

We will and Rafael has the right attitude to play against them it must be said, much like Evra, but we don't want him getting targeted aerially and have that pointed out as a weak spot - as we've seen with Evans, once a weakness is exposed it can be very unsettling for a young defender. Build him up slowly against the likes of Blackburn and West Ham who do a bit of both until he's ready, I think.

Interesting to note he won 13 of the 14 challenges he contested against Blackburn including all six aerial battles, against Jason Roberts, El Hadji-Diouf and Brett Emerton.

This lad is improving drastically

It wasn't just delusion though re: Evans, he was very good in most of 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons. Only Pique was better than him, that too marginally(in the age group).

Ok so today I was over my mates house and he is an Everton fan, and I was talking up Rafael and he did the same with Rodwell. Then he tells me that Rodwell is a better talent than Rafael, and I respond by saying Rafael is the best young right back in the world whilst Rodwell isn't close to being one of the best young midfielders in the world. I then went onto say that Rafael has already established himself as a first choice right back amongst three experienced players (O'shea, Neville and Brown).

I know they both play different positions so it's hard to judge who is the better player but who do you guys think is more talented, and has established themselves better so far?

My personal opinion is Rafael, so it would be interesting to hear the opinions of neutrals like Pete Storey etc.

Hard to say as Rafael has definitely had more chances to shine than Rodwell and he's at a better club. Right now though there is surely no disputing that Rafael is way ahead in his development. Champs League appearances, first choice at United, Brazil International squad...

Far too early to say. I thought Rafael was probably our best attacker last night, amazingly. Might be a bit of an exaggeration but he started off more than a couple of really potent attacks.

Amazing level of improvement over such a short space of time, he's always shown that. At some point it's bound to slow down and he's going to hit a rocky spell, surely?

He's great though.

Rafael may be the best under 21 talent in the premier league. No-one else is getting regular games at such a good club.

I'm not so sure it will slow down. i think it already did for a period as he was looking for the right balance. He's just an outstanding prospect and has improved to the point where you don't worry. He will make mistakes, that's obvious but he's a gem

Agreed.

He was excellent in the build up play for our goal, he is just an outstanding prospect.

I am going to blow a gasket when he does hit a rocky patch or have a poor game and some will jump at the opportunity to try tear him down.

Frankly - he has shown everything to be first choice starter for the immediate future. He may hit a rough patch but, when that does happen, hope he isn't dropped just because we have some options to try someone different.

Just amazing - hope we tie him down for a long long deal when the time comes.

Just fabulous again tonight, it's amazing how much the defensive side of his game has developed in such a short period of time. Apart from one strange pass straight to an Arsenal player, did he put a foot wrong all night?

Apparently he's dislocated his shoulder again

Manchester United are waiting to see if Rafael Da Silva needs an operation after the young Brazilian defender dislocated his shoulder for the second time in two years.
Rafael, who dislocated the same joint in July 2009, suffered a recurrence of the injury in training on Thursday but it popped straight back into place.
The 21-year-old has been sent back to the specialist to see if surgery is required and to find out how much of the new season he is likely to miss.

God damnit. Bad injury to have. Hope he won't get it very frequently in the future. Should just get it sorted asap.

Or Evra is fine and Smalling starts at right back

The twins are made of wafer.

It was a really smart decision to sell both O'Shea and Brown when we've got the perpetually injured Twins at Right back.

O'Shea is out for the Sunderland's opener and Brown spent probably more time on the treatment table than most, so what's your point? It's not like Smalling or Jones haven't shown they can slot in there if needed is it?

was a bit gutted about o'shea gone....i think we could do with signing another full-back just for assurances we have sufficent cover.
