Evra played right back for us against Roma(that 7-1) in CL(coming on as substitute).

Rooney I don't think ever has. Starting to get a feeling that Carrick never filled in at RB, but only in the center.

Tweetie never did.

James Chester?

People who obviously played RB for us
(7)
Neville
Brown
Oshea
Rafael
Jones
Smalling
Fabio

People who filled in (5)
Valencia
Fletcher
Hargreaves
Evans (second half + extra time of the 2009 League Cup Final v Spurs)
Evra (v Roma in April 2007 off the bench)

Youngsters who got a few games (8)
de Laet
Vermijl
Simpson
Chester
Eckersley
Pique
M. Keane
Bardsley (played RB in the 2-0 loss to Coventry in the 07/08 League Cup)

There is your full 18 + 2

EDIT: Forgot Keane and Bardsley

Micheal Keane also played as a right back for us against Aldershot in Carling Cup.

Tunnicliffe definitely played as a right back against Newcastle this season.

so that gives us 16

Neville, brown, Oshea, Rafael, jones, smalling, Valencia, Fabio, fletcher, Hargreaves, de Laet, vermijl, Simpson, Evans, evra, pique

then possibly eckersley/Keane as the last one?

So there was either more than 18 or some of these names are wrong.

if SharkyMcShark is right, this would give us 20 wouldn't it?

Got a pm from the newbs.

Just seeing the debate on the Rafael thread so though I'd send this. Can't remember Evra ever playing there but quite sure about the rest of them. Including Neville I got 18

Rafael
Brown
O'Shea
Simpson
Eckrsely
Fabio
Valencia
Fletcher
Hargreaves
Smalling
Jones
De Laet
Kieran lee (Started the league game against Chelsea in 06/07)
Vermijl
Pique
Park
Evra
Neville

Dont think Kieran lee counts.. but still copy pasting.

Agree with KM, Tunnicliffe certainly did.
I thought Park did too.. but that might have been in game with a tactical switch.. so that probably doesnt count.

Seems we have 22. Either we have extra's that didn't actually play at RB or the original question missed a few

 Never expected to spark this much debate. Good work guys because I was stuck on around tenish .

Obviously some of these listed mustn't be elibable. It has to be since 2008 remember...

why you guys all blaming me lol? It was in that report of Rafael someone posted on the last page. It mentioned that there have been 18 RB'S since Gary.

 I hope you guys weren't hoping for me to provide the answers, this is a team effort.

 so you don't even know the answer yourself?

Does the 18 only count premier league games? that could shorten our list at least

.Since Neville suffered a long-term injury in March 2007, after which he was never the same, United have used 18 different right-backs. Apartfrom 2007-08, when Wes Brown locked down the position, there has been little continuity

EDIT: Sorry I'm at work and on my phone so quickly posted that message on the last page, didn't realise what I was starting. :wenger:

@MichaelLCrick: #MUFC boss #SAF: "truly eye-catching improvement this season so far for me is the maturity that young Rafael has added to his game."

@MichaelLCrick: #MUFC #SAF: Rafael "our most improved player this season".

Some well deserved praise from SAF.

Don't like the way in which people are fretting over him vs Ronaldo (in the 'Beating Madrid' and 'Ronaldo' threads). Obviously Ronaldo is the best winger in the world, and has the potential to give any fullback a nightmare. But it seems like there are too many on here who are happy to chime in with the well-earned praise for Rafael, and agree that he's probably the best or second best RB in the league, but then don't demonstrate that belief and support, and start talking bollocks about Smalling being a better bet to handle Ronny.

At the moment, Rafael is our best RB by some way. If he can't handle Ronny there, no-one in our team can.

I really like Rafael. When you hear people talk about 'a proper player' he's one that i think of which is strange when you realise you're talking about a Brazilian RB. It obviously helped that he's been with you from a young age, or he wouldn't have that 'nutjob' edge i don't think.

He's always struck me as a big game player too though. People were afraid Bale would be all over him but he couldn't get out of Rafaels pocket. I mean, if he can handle Ronaldo's padawan he can handle the master, right? ;)

Evra came on at right back vs Roma when we thrashed them. Thats how he was able to come onto his left foot and score

Im actually quite confident he can keep ronaldo quiet.

Between him and valencia they have a good understanding there, and against semi ronaldo (bale) he has proved he can do the business.

I have no worries about ronaldo out pacing raf, but will he be able to deal with the quick feet?. Well when he was younger against ronaldinho he had perhaps his best game ever, and he dealt with frank ribery pretty well, until he was obviously red carded unluckily.

I really do think he wil be ok, its di maria against evra i would be more worried about.

Yep, I hear that. Especially as Evra's most common fault in bad games over the last season or two has been not bothering to try and prevent crosses, and di Maria is a deadly crosser of the ball, especially onto Ronaldo's head.

Of course, if Ozil and Kaka continue to be as lacklustre as they have been so far, it should give Cleverley and Carrick a bit of leeway to help Evra out. And if we play Young (which I'd rather we didn't, but we probably will if our team situation then looks anything like it does now) he's pretty good at providing another body in front of a winger.

Di Maria is nowhere near good as he was last year, Evra will have no problems at all, he is awfull this season(Di Maria).

Evra hardly bothered to stop crosses even when he was at his best, three odd years ago. Some people seem to remember him as the perfect defender, but he never was. He's always been one to take a risk(scissor kick) or let the odd cross go in.

I'm not taking anything away from him by saying that, I'm just pointing that out. He's been close to his best so far this season, to think that some posters wanted to sell him at one point last season is ridiculous.

If Rafael and Valencia are fit and in form in mid Feb to March they're definitely our best bet to dealing with Ronaldo.

Certainly wouldn't want to entertain ideas of any other player being at full back v Ronaldo!

The main reason people think Evra was the perfect defender was down to him being a one man army down the left flank that the other team's winger and right back usually did more defending than attacking.

So then Ronaldo would be playing LW?

That's where he tends to start. Obviously he roams. And that might actually be a route of attack we're considering when he doesn't bother even pretending to track back.

Anyone has an idea when will Rafael return to the first team?

I am missing him already, clearly our best RB.

SAF mentioned Jones and Young will be back on Saturday after the game. Didn't mention Rafael so I guess he won't be back.

Hopefully he'll be back before long. We're really missing something with him on the sidelines.

Valencia is missing him too. If I was Fergie I'd try swapping them for a bit.

God no. We need to defend better, not attack better right now and he's been our best defender for the most part.

Definately not a good option to play Smalling at right back (although we had no choice today). Rafael provides the energy and drive on the right hand side of the pitch. Valencia thrived off it for most of the season and its no wonder he is struggling even more now that Rafael is out.
