Thats where the coaches come in, Rafael didn't just go out and decide to attack, that would have been his instruction.

I never said that. He tried to defend at times, but his attempts were poor, frankly.

Rafael had a good game today. Very effective going forward at the heart of all our best moves and put himself about defensively all game. Was the only man i seen in 90 minutes that got near Dembele, intercepting him twice (one led to our first goal i think) and putting him out of his stride a few times. He could have done better a few times defensively, Kacaniklic had a bit of joy against him. Outmuscled him one time in the first half and glided past him one time a bit too easily in the second. Got attracted towards the ball a couple of times too near the end. However last 5 minutes made a couple of great clearing headers and blocks.

The reaction on here has been over the top as usual, laughable infact. Do people really think if his defending was 'extremely poor' our manager would have left him on for 90 minutes? It wasnt a perfect defensive display but it doesnt have to be anyones fault every single time a ball comes into our box. If this was the case opposition fullbacks would never be considered to have played well against us.

All in all his contribution on our overall performance was more positive than negative, probably our 4th/5th best player, and should help him cement his place at right back over the next few weeks, but he can still do a bit better.

.... and how about addressing the bit about you suggesting all these negative 'if' scenarios that didnt materialise while ignoring the positive that actually happened?

We had no one to replace him with. Valencia is not a right back, and Jones, Smalling, Evans etc are all injured.

Because these "if's" will turn into "should'ves" against better teams.

 I think you're giving Pete a bit too much credit here, Sults.

Could have swore i seen Evans on the bench. Anyway if he was defending 'extremely poorly' Valencia would have moved to fullback. Its not like we've been shy to take him off in the past. We left him on because generally he was playing well.

Well said

Valencia is not a right back as I said and when he plays there he's worse than Rafael, and if Evans had been fit he would've started or played a part. He's not quite there yet.

I would much sooner us have players trying to play football and occasionally making a mistake than have players who just hammer the ball out of play every time an opponent comes near them.

not in that part of the park. it's basic , it's done without drama. put it to touch. you then defend the throw in. simple.

You're not getting it are you...

He wont attack as much against better teams, because he will be instructed not to by the coaches.

Yeah maybe in the 1990's, or now if you watch Stoke, but football has moved on. Defenders are much more technical now and will try to keep the ball in play as much as possible, putting the ball out is the very last resort. Surely you only have to watch football at the top level to see how reluctant defenders at top clubs are to just welly it?

Of course. But fullback is a defensive position first and foremost, and defensively he was poor today. And I'm sure Ferguson will let him know in his own way.

Against sides with a notable height advantage i do agree he may find himself in the crowd. Against Everton last week i think it was more to do with having only joined up with the squad a few days before and not played 1 pre season game with us.

And being shite in the Olympics Final.

well it's 2012 and he should have put it out. simple school boy stuff. you don't f about when you're cornered. i'm not talking about hoofin' it. he was facing his own goal with nowhere to go and made the wrong choice.

The caf just gets better, player has a good attacking game, scores the goal which ends up being the difference between the sides, gets criticized because that style of play might not be suitable in a totally different game.

He's a fecking fullback, we're not criticizing his attacking play which was great. We are criticizing his defensive frailties. Do you want this thread to be like RAWK? 200 pages of dick sucking and no constructive criticism? I like Rafael, he's a joy to watch at times, but he can also drive me mad with his positioning.

No pre season for him mate.

He played in the Olympics, he didn't need one. He was dropped likely because of a poor showing in the final against Mexico.

If Jones played right back then people will complain that he can't link up with Valencia/Nani and offers nothing going forward. Can't win

.

“Rafael has scored three or four in his time with us. He may not be prolific but he has the energy to do that - he played well.”

Jones was fantastic going forward at times last season, particularly his crossing and at times his ability to beat a man. Which lead some people to prematurely compare him to Edwards.

He's a wingback, you seem to not know the difference.

Does he need to keep improving his defending? Yes, but overall he had a good game, as Fergie acknowledged, not a poor one as you're suggesting.

playing for brazil in something like the olympics is "pre-season".

and he's a rb not a wingback. united play 4-4-2. he was a wingback v arse in that fac match.

"He [Veron] is a fecking great player" were his parting words. "And you're all fecking idiots."

Sold to Chelsea not long after.

He had a typical pre-season (defensive liability/horrorshow) for Brazil.

He played every game, and got to the final. Would not have played more than a game if he was as bad as you suggest. Admittedly he had a horror show in the final.

Oh shit, yes, I see what you mean.

Had Veron scored, and had one ruled out for offside just before he said that?

Right, watched the first half back, he was at fault for the first. He gave the ball away, then won it back, then gave it away again, pushing Carrick into a tackle he shouldn't have to make. After that he was very good. Winning the ball back in great positions, and of course, scoring. Then there was DDG's miraculous double save after he got nudged to the ground with absolute ease. Must be stronger than that.

He was a great player, and if SAF thought otherwise he would not have purchased him...
