Just like some fecking ridiculous shite to mess with the guys head right before the start of the season. If he can look this in the face and come over the top of it I will be proud and he will have done fantastically.

Always annoys me that mistakes by defenders/keepers are always highlighted as being responsible for a result but when a striker fluffs an easy chance (here's looking at you, Oscar) it's never perceived as a similarly influential piece of incompetence.

People seem to denote more value to a loss of a goal than a potential gain of a goal. As in -1 is of more emotional value than a ***.

That's definitely true and often due to the fact that if a defender or goal keeper makes a big mistake the result is often immediate noticeable.

If a striker misses or a midfielder plays a bad pass directly to the opposition which results in a counter attack people are usually less inclined to make a big drama out of it.

It's annoying but it is like it is, people celebrate the goal scorers and blame the defender/goal keepers.

It's a real shame he made the mistake though, he was brilliant for them in the competition as a whole, played every minute of every game.

Still, it's a recurring facet of his game, he loves to make a big mistake every few games, but he's only 21, so it's to be expected.

Yep, it's really annoying. Defenders and goalkeepers seem to get short changed on both facets - i.e. they seem to play in the highest risk positions, and also probably earn, on average, less than midifelders/attackers.

A striker can have a stinker, and score a goal = man of the match.

A GK or defender can make 10-20 great saves/tackles, but the lord forbid they have that 1 lapse in concentration.

Nature of the game I suppose.

I think this will be his season. Mainly due to us having no other full backs. I mean we've got Evra, but he's not a full back, more like a... Jesus, actually.

He's a great player. Adds tremendous amounts in attack and can be an effective defender although I think he struggles for consistency. Defence-wise he reminds me of Gary Neville in the struggle for consistency early on in his career.

TBH in critical games he can tend to make HUGE mistakes - Bayern Munich, Everton, Mexico!

He's played close to 100 games and you've highlighted 3 errors......

Brilliant news for the lad, few years time Fabio will be 3!

I love him, he's just awesome. Yes, he'll make mistakes and some will be very costly, but he's without a doubt one of the most exciting young defenders in the world right now.

Brilliant in games were we are attacking. Not so much in games we have to defend.

He was at fault for the free kick which led to their goal

Remember he has only turned 22. He's bloody fantastic going forward and adds a lot to our attacking play. He will improve on the defensive side.

The mistakes always stick out more don't they? He's had really good games against very good wingers, give him time.

He's going to be a star. Our defense also looks ropey due to one midfielder playing in defense. When Rio comes in, he'll be fine.

some fantastic interceptions, great runs forward, a goal.

got beaten easily on a couple of occasions though.

anyway a good start for rafa.

God almighty. Easy pleased bunch aren't you? He'll bundle about, always moving, but what good is it if he attacks well but can't defend? Fulham's two goals came down his side, and the number of times he went forward for us to lose possession, which he did himself enough, was ridiculous. I'll be watching the game again tonight, but you've got to do your primary job properly first, which he doesn't always do. He'd be bloody dangerous against a good opposition, particularly on the counter.

Brilliant going forward. Pretty awful defending today though. He was skinned by the most basic move today on more than one occasion.

Almost all their chances came through him, unfortunately. As likely to be on the opposition penalty spot as to be in his proper defending position.

Doesn't stop the cross at source enough for me.

Still, first match and a full 90! Will wonders never cease.

Great going forward

Shite defensively.

But I suppose that's fine for most of you as long as we beat some mid table team at home.

He's shown in the past he's much better than that defensively though.

It's not much of a concern at this stage. Only just turned 22.

Going forward, he's as good as any right back in the league. Could have had a hat trick today, and wouldn't look out of place as a right winger.

Defensively, when he's on it, he's solid. Today, he wasn't quite there.

Overall though, a very good display.

This.

Ruiz and duff gave him a tough time today. But as usual he was full of energy and aggression. Great going forwards but if only he would stop being so rash in the tackle.
