I admit that I should rewatch that situation again, but even after watching it just once it was obvious nobody from our team defended good enough there.

He needs to cut out the petulance. He is passionate, and mostly channels it well, but has a tendency when we arent playing well to do something stupid when the red mist descends on him.

Needs to have a word with Rooney, as Wayne suffered from the same thing when he was younger but has managed to cut it out of his game whilst retaining the passion and energy.

The first time Hazard went by him, Vidic came running across to stand directly behind Rafael, almost NBA-screen like. What was that about?
Vidic was shifting over to cover, but his legs are gone.

Rafael should've been off at the end.

let's not forget about the cardiff incident

What is it with Lawrenson. Shove off and cause problems for your old boys.

One bad game and people freak out.

He's our best player after Rooney, RVP, and Carrick and one of if not the best RB in the league. Get a feckin grip people.

Is there not an issue with Rafael that in big games he tends to have his worst performances? It strikes me as if opposing teams see him as a potential weakness, perhaps with his temperament and positioning, and thus try to put him under pressure.

I actually find him to be a lovely player technically but I just can't see him as a top level player until he irons out certain problems within his game. It's not the first time he's kicked out when the going gets tough.

 He has had the sly kick after losing possession a few times this season.

Rafael is an excellent young full back, one shocker doesn't change that.

Following on from Fabio's last appaerance, along with Moyes continued reluctance to play them both together, it's hard to shake the suspicion that they are in fact the same person after all.

Trouble is that it isnt "one shocker", he has had a few moments like that.

To clarify, I love Rafael, he is quality, getting better and should be a player we hang on to for a long, long time. But he needs to mature a bit at times and not let the frustration get the better of him.

Rooney was the same at 23, things change though. Also probably off topic for the quoting, but Lawro can feck off, causing mischief, what does he know about Moyes?

Opponents know he can be wound up. Dunno if you spotted it but every time Luiz got near Rafael yesterday, he was niggling him. OK, he did that with a lot of other players too but there was one incident where it looked like Luiz went in leading with his elbow. Rafael went down and got up rubbing his cheek. Play continued so either Dowd didn't see or didn't think there was anything in it.

Yeh, it's clear. Although to be fair, I'd struggle to maintain my composure around David Luiz. A thug of the highest order.

He was targeted throughout the game. Someone nailed him just before Luiz launched the forearm smash on Valencia, then just after Vidic got sent off someone went right through him, and nothing given. I was watching the US coverage, and just before the tackle he'd been involved in something in the Chelsea box where Ivonvic fell over his back, and then something happened in the corner. Whilst the tv camera was showing Ivonvic on the ground, the commentators mentioned Ramires had elbowed Rafael in the ribs. That's without the little digs here and there through the game, it's clear they had targeted him.

We won't sell him, he's one of our best players, and whilst he's cut out the rash challenges by and large, I don't mind him showing a bit of emotion like he did yesterday. It's been a long time since we saw that sort of thing from any of our players, perhaps if others could channel that we'd be in a better position than we are.

No I don't think this issue exists. In the big games, he is a reliable player. Even when he was 20/21, he managed to stop an inform Bale and Nasri, and that was back in 10/11. IMO when he defends poorly, the reactions are over the top. In what has been a disappointing season for him so far (and not because of form but because of injuries), he's been good/very good in every one of the games he's played, with the exception of the first half yesterday. It wasn't that bad of a half, but he didn't look focused enough and allowed Hazard and Willian to dribble past him easily.

Boys will be boys. Brazilian style! What is it about young Brazillian players looking so innocent?

Clearly showing his frustration. I love it, it shows he is hurting and wants to turn it around.

Does need to keep his head but he is at his best when he does have a little bite in his game.

Not having this "he's poor defensively" after one poor game.

One of our most consistent players and one of few who are top drawer in my opinion. When he plays our right hand side looks great no matter who is ahead of him.

He really isn't, positionally he is good, but is bit struggling in one on ones.

Hasnt looked right since his return from injury, most players take a while to get going and he's finding the same thing. Needs to find his way back into form and sustained fitness otherwise he isnt assured of being our right back for years to come.

He's trying to win everything and anything. Probably just a knock on effect of his lack of games; he really wants to impress.

Not to worry. He's a class act and has proven so over a fairly long period of time now. Obviously, the faction who sway from opinion to opinion over a matter of one or two games may see things differently.

I feel for him big time. Buttner is killing him. He is always having to balance the back four out when Buttner goes and plays at centre forward. It might look like he is out of position but Buttner is killing the back four as usual. It's amazing how are professional footballer can do so without fail.

Rafael just has to bite the bullet and stick to his defensive duties until Buttner gets subbed.

Can't really see the logic behind blaming Buttner.
When you have played in a back four you will understand.

Rafael doesn't know whether to come or go. He sees where the ball is and thinks well I have to join in the attack but he sees that Buttner is up near left wing and centre forward, so you get caught in two minds, whether to do the right thing or balance and that's why he is all over the shop.

It's not a direct blame of Buttner, Rafael needs to be better but I do feel for a full back when the other full back does the back four no favours.

I have played in a back four..Moyes favours attacking full backs and Evra probably gets forward more then Buttner so I don't really see why Rafael's poor defending has much to do with the opposite full back.

He is definitely awfull in this game, I was maybe bit too defending on him after first half, but it's one of his worst performances I can remember.

Because Evra goes forward when the time is right. Buttner just has tunnel vision and runs up and down with absolutely not thought invovled.

Again, in terms of 1v1 defending, it's Rafael's issue, not Buttner's. In terms of positioning, he isn't helped by Buttner, none of the back four is helped by Buttner.

Looked off all night, almost bordering not arsed and that's not like Rafael at all.

You cannot compare Rooney at 23 to Rafael. Rafael has shown glimpses of having great ability, but not consistently enough. He is not the best rb in the league and when I hark back to days of Neville & Irwin in the fb positions....Rafael is nowhere near that standard. The eyeballing of Tevez made him a folk-hero but he's not at the levels Irwin played at.

I'm not surprised Mark "Really, I'm not gay" Lawrenson has tweeted that. It's all part of the Liverpool media cartel which is bigging up everything the scum do and, now, knocking or picking on everything we do. Its a conspiracy, I tells ya.

He's been off form lately, not surprising considering the rest of the team has been a shambles all season. He'll get back to normal soon though, a shame he missed the penalty though as he clearly cares more then most and it will have hurt him.

Felt for him, never nice to be on the wrong end of the deciding penalty.

I worry he's going the same way as Evra, already. All over the place defensively, half the time he's not in his position to defend an attack and while he looked a real talent on the ball when we just signed him, now he's very average going forward for a fullback.
