Picture is from the night before Swansea game and the comment is from after his agent spoke to calcio. Here's a screeny I've just taken with a timestamp on Rafa's reply.

Good work, Damien. ;)

Just rewatched the Swansea game, his final ball is really excellent, his decision making and passing in final third is really excellent, he deserved two assists in this game for creating two easy chances for his teammate, and somehow end up with none. And this is not the first time that happens.

Define "world class" defender. It's an awful term, particularly when you take into account that the so called defensive elite aren't actually particularly good at defending. See Alves, Maicon and centre halfs like Ramos and Luiz. To answer the question under a different broad tag, then yes I would. He defends well in practically every game. He rarely gets beaten 1 vs 1, is unusually good in the air for his height, we seldom concede goals from down the right side. I'm not entirely sure what more he has to do.

It's bad enough that the media still maintain stereotypes about some of our players, but when some of our supporters do it then it gets a bit much.

Not a big fan of the term myself, but it in reference to a claim he was one of the top RB in the world. I did not say he was crap, but that his defensive skills do not stand out.

My main point was that he's been available for roughly half of our league matches over a substantail period of time (if Wiki figures are to be believed). It wasn't just a couple of freak injuries too. The lad is injury prone, and I think playing one of Smalling, Jones, Valencia, Fletcher, Cleverley or Fabio at RB every other game is something which we can't afford. There's no point in giving away goals and league points in order to keep a highly talented first-choice RB on the sidelines.

According to wiki he played 16,12,28, and 6 times in the league for us over the last three and a half seasons (does that make sense?). Far from being a tragedy if he decided to feck off. Excellent when going forward, but I wouldn't count him anywhere near one of the best at what defenders have to do, which is to defend. Considering him as automatic first choice also had us using a variety of players out of position in order to fill the gap when he's injured instead of looking for a replacement.

Overall, I'm all for giving him some real competition for his place anyway.
Two of those games in 10/11 were against an in form Bale and Nasri. Watch those games again. Rafael was 20? He put in excellent performances against them both. In 11/12, I think he was injured for the first half. He featured in 12 out of our remaining 22 games, since his return against Fulham. He would have featured more, but I remember Smalling/Jones playing because of heigh advantage and so on. His worst game in that season was against Everton at home, but other than this it was a consistent period for him and it's no surprise that this form continued in 12/13. I disagree with you on his defensive side. Rafael is one of the best right backs in the league, the balance between attacking and defending is hard to accomplish, but he's improved on every aspect of his play. Our defending and attacking increase and become potent when he plays, he adds so much to the side. What we definitely need is a right back, but not a quality right back. A decent backup right back who can do a better job than Smalling/Jones.

Rafael does miss too many games for my liking, but I'm still not convinced there is a need to buy another right back to cover him. Valencia might have a second career there, Varela is waiting in the wings, and Moyes likes Smalling at RB even if we don't.

The only downside to Rafael is his fitness record. His all-action style naturally leads to niggly and impact injuries whilst injuries at a young age have probably lingered on.

Fantastic player...just wish he was available every single week.

Jones has the same perpencity to pick up injuries. Still both are fantastic. Maybe red tinted glasses but I'd take Rafael over any other rb in our league. Heck I'd take him over anyone but Lahm.

I agree. His fight and tenacity make him even more indispensable imo. He has the attitude belief and determination of a United player. I remember Evans last season saying how Rafa drives the team on and it motivates them to give extra when they see him playing with the infectious enthusiasm he plays with. For me Rafael, Jones, de Gea, Welbeck and Januzaj should without doubt be the young spine our team is built around.

I've said before, he's the best crosser of a moving ball we've had since Beckham IMO.

All my friends who watch football (even a so called United fan) think he's shit...I just don't believe someone who says a player like Rafael is shit and say they watch United every week.

It will take another MOTD section on him to do the job. That programme is the source of all pub debate and opinion.

I find the same with most I talk to, though I know they don't regularly watch him and get most their stuff from the likes of motd. He's not quite there yet, I think defensively he can sometimes knock it out when he could play it and plays it when he should knock it out, and then offensively he can work on his crossing, but at his age he's looking very good. Honestly can't see how anyone who see's him regularly could doubt that he can be a top player in his position. Only thing for me bar something like other personal distractions that could take him of course is injuries. Otherwise he juts needs more games/experience.

Likewise I don't know many non-United fans who rate him as highly as as United fans. But I tend to think that's because they don't see him enough rather than him just not being as good as we like to think.

Poor first half - been dribbled past a couple of times. Poor for Chelsea's second goal too.

He's over-rated on here.

Very good dribbler of the ball and good at one-twos but he's a defender and defensive skills leave a lot to be desired.

That's not true, Shane regarding his defensive skills... This is his first poor half of the season. I've not seen Rafael play like this for a while...

Not often say this nowadays but the wee fellas been shit today

I think he is playing well and definitely the reason why Valencia looks better than usual. Yes there will be times when hazard puts him under pressure but all in all he has handled it decently. Its our left flank which is leaking goals.

No he's certainly not been shit. Jesus, it's like people dont even watch the game before they whine these days.

He has looked poor today in fairness. His season hasn't been great at all compared to last year. But many others can say the same

Has he feck been shit. What a load of Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime on here when we're losing.

He's been done a couple of times by very good play from Hazard, granted, but he's been mostly OK and attacked very well.

Been poor defensively, playing like he's a centreback pushed out there. Doing well going forward but needs to do a lot more defensively.

What reason did he have to look the other way while Chelsea were scoring their 2nd goal?

Why would Rafael be marking Eto'o?

Our whole team can say the same, minus Rooney and de Gea.

Just thank our lucky stars Hazard isn't playing on Evra's side.

The first time Hazard went by him, Vidic came running across to stand directly behind Rafael, almost NBA-screen like. What was that about?

There's some fecking morons on this site. It's like they wait as long as possible with their agenda, then when a rare mistake/bad game happens they come crawling out the woodwork with their tired rhetoric.
