Rafael said he isn't leaving.

Of course he isn't leaving though. Why would we sell him and why would he leave?

So according to twitter he's staying?
Well according to twitter we would have the worlds greatest team if anything there would add up..

We need to tie him up on a new long term contract he is one of our most important players, one who is great now and can get even better, great to see him dismiss the rumours from earlier.

Its little things like that which make our fans love him I think. One stupid rumour goes out that he might leave and he instantly denies it. Good lad.

According to what he said on his instagram account, not twitter.

Fair play to the lad for immediately ending speculation.

Potato potato!!

Brilliant from Rafa. Immediately ends speculation, unlike certain other players.

I'm not sure about that. He talks about being at a hotel and having a game "tomorrow". That's clearly from some time back and not in response to his agent's statement. Unless instagram works some other way?

I think it was more that his agent was responding to someone else suggesting they were leaving. He says not in Jan but they could in the summer. Rafael responded to someone asking him about it on instagram and says hes "not leaving". Fabio probably is though

Replacing him with Seamus Coleman worries me more.
Think you're looking through green tinted specs.

Coleman would do well here but Rafael is a level above him. He's potentially one of the best in the world.

Replacing Rafa with Coleman would make no sense whatsoever, unless he forces a move.
It's a bullshit rumour, but you two haven't a clue about Coleman if this is how you react to it. He's a top fullback and improving rapidly every single season. I said it a few years ago that he was potential United quality and he's gone on to prove it.

If we didn't habe such pressing issues elsewhere in the team then I'd be hoping we got Coleman in the summer, letting him and Rafael battle it out for that RB spot.

Not for me. I think the two of them are too good to have one as reserve. If Rafael was to leave Coleman would be a great replacement but I'd much prefer to hold onto Rafael just because he's our lad already and he's excellent.

Can Coleman play left back ? Denis Irwin was a right back who made the left back position his own. Imagine both Rafael and him on both side of the field

According to wiki he played 16,12,28, and 6 times in the league for us over the last three and a half seasons (does that make sense?). Far from being a tragedy if he decided to feck off. Excellent when going forward, but I wouldn't count him anywhere near one of the best at what defenders have to do, which is to defend. Considering him as automatic first choice also had us using a variety of players out of position in order to fill the gap when he's injured instead of looking for a replacement.

Overall, I'm all for giving him some real competition for his place anyway.

 He's a very good defender but no he's Brazilian so he must be terrible at defending

AFAIK he's totally right sided either fb or occasionally can play on the wing. I've no recollection of him ever switching to the left for Everton or Ireland.

Don't think this is an option.

good spot tbf mate. worried now.

Do you actually watch any of the matches?

The last bit about competition is right, hence I think we forked out for Varela (in the long term).

But the rest of your post is simply....wrong.

I suppose the telling fact about raf and his defending ability is to look at how many chances we give up down the right when he plays. It's a clear enough answer then.

I'd love to see him play with a good right winger, that'd be lovely.

edit: feck, nevermind, I thought you said you want him to play as right winger.

I think it does.

Notice how the guy who asked him then preceded to mention the recent speculation.

Old photo (possibly his most recent?) new comment.

No, I use my old transistor radio listening to matches on the BBC World Service. They still give lineups after the 16:00 news and Rafael's name is often missing.

Based on watching him play for us, would you rate him as a world-class defender?

To be fair, trying to exploit acres of space on the left side of our defense isn't necessarily a bad plan A. ;)

Define "world class" defender. It's an awful term, particularly when you take into account that the so called defensive elite aren't actually particularly good at defending. See Alves, Maicon and centre halfs like Ramos and Luiz. To answer the question under a different broad tag, then yes I would. He defends well in practically every game. He rarely gets beaten 1 vs 1, is unusually good in the air for his height, we seldom concede goals from down the right side. I'm not entirely sure what more he has to do.

It's bad enough that the media still maintain stereotypes about some of our players, but when some of our supporters do it then it gets a bit much.

Picture is from the night before Swansea game and the comment is from after his agent spoke to calcio. Here's a screeny I've just taken with a timestamp on Rafa's reply.
