It was a Toon fan who told me that, and yea, he despises Ashley. They're convinced Ashley's only ambition is to keep Sports Direct in the PL eye for the marketing.

Somewhat of a bogey team for us over the past few years. Nevertheless, if we lose against the lot, it has nothing to do with "game-raising". It's down to us.

What a piece of work Ashley is:

Some of the names have changed but the only real difference, as far as I can see, is that St James’ Park is 10 years older, corroding, in obvious need of care.

Mike Ashley now wants us to believe that it is not the case – “inaccurate and irresponsible”, according to a spokesman – that when he encountered some disillusioned Newcastle fans outside a pizza restaurant the other night he went in for the Peter Kay technique of surreptitiously flashing a V-sign with a scratching-the-head disguise.

All that can really be said is he has taken supporters for fools before and it is not easy accepting his version of the truth when the evidence from Kevin Keegan’s book makes it clear the Newcastle owner will happily blur the lines between PR and make‑believe, true and false, fact and fantasy.

“I have never looked at the club website and I have to be exceptionally bored to read the programme,” Ashley told the panel at Keegan’s tribunal for constructive dismissal. “You will get more sense out of the Beano.” Yet Ashley was happy to put his name to an article on both platforms stating Keegan had the final say on transfers, knowing that was patently untrue. “Was I conscious that I was involved in a PR exercise?” he said. “Yes.”

Agree with Benitez. They won't go down. Mutu Shelvey and 1 or 2 others are the kind of assets Huddersfield Cardiff etc just don't have.
 
Good thing we wiped that smirkness off Ashley's fat face. He was really amused at 0-2, making calls to everyone and seemed like he was counting his chickens before they'd hatched.

Brian Clough probably thought that until it was too late with Nottingham forest. The team had Roy Keane, Stuart Pearce, Steve stone, Nigel clough and a few other decent players but ultimately lacked a couple of good centre half’s. Newcastle have a few good individuals but lack quality in key areas. For their sake I hope Benitez is saying 1 thing in public but begging for funds privately or they will go down.

Clough also wouldn't do tactics (Liam O Kane and Archie Gemmill had to secretly funnel info on the opposition's set up to Pearce)and never tried adjusting to the no backpass rule. He also refused to meet the 2.3 million asking price for Collymore (which they ended up doing the following season) and sadly Clough was an alcoholic in at least his final couple of years. Pearce was also out injured a lot and Keane spent a lot of time a kind of sweeper. Newcastle don't face Forest's issues I reckon.

We're very short of quality up front but I'd say the bigger problem is a lack of strength in depth. The starters (bar the strikers) are, on paper at least, good enough to be safe. The backup is a precipitous drop in quality.

GK (Dubravka) good enough. Darlow - shaky backup.
CB (Lascelles, Lejune) good enough. Clark, Fernandez - decent backup.
LB/RB (Dummett, Yedlin) good enough. Manquillo, Lazar, Schaar - manquillo played out of his skin on Saturday, has been less than impressive otherwise. Ditto for the other two.
CM (Diame, Shelvey) good enough. Issac Hayden is the only other senior CM and he's both prone to injury and not very good.
LM/RM (Kenedy, Ritchie) good enough. Atsu was so wank when he came on it was unreal. If he's the subject of an investigation and found guilty of throwing the match I wouldn't be surprised. Ali Dia levels of bad. Jacob Murphy I'm not too harsh on as he's still improving but objectively not good enough.

And then our most glaring weakness both in terms of starting and backup quality - Striker

Mutu - New player, new league, too soon to judge but tbh I do like what I've seen so far. harrys and harasses the backline, finished well enough.
Joselu - I want to like him but he's unbelievably bad. Makes me pine for the days of Shola Ameobi.
Perez - Flashes hot and cold, mostly cold. WHAT WAS THAT WHIFF. Also loves a dive and misplaced passes.
Rondon - Injured. Wasn't impressive before that tbh. Absolutely no idea what that deal was all about and frankly I'd have rather given Gayle another hack at top level. Hope he comes back an absolute beast

Is it good enough to stay up? Probably. Some people say we've had a tough opening set of fixtures but the time for crying about that is over and we need to pick up points going into December.

Frankly I'm not too bothered at this point though. Ashley & Co had ripped the soul out of the club. Rafa ignited a spark of hope but they decided to feck him around too. When he walks at the end of the season I expect Steve Bruce and a 3rd relegation in 10 years awaits.

Perhaps but Newcastle are in the bottom 3 for a reason. 6 goals in 8 games doesn’t bode well. Unless they can find goals from external loans or purchases in January then I fully expect the bottom 3 now to be the 3 that go down

Feel so sorry for him, as much as I hated him at liverpool, he is far better than a team at the bottom of the league

He’s always got the owners to blame ol Rafa. He likes that, it’s Liverpool v.2.

His first 11 is good enough to be hovering around 15th-17th at the very least. He’s just a negative, rigid manager.

I think when you’re up their, the fans, the stadium and club in general is probably quite attractive. I think he was holding out for that investment/takeover, which looks like it’s never coming.
 
They are on some terrible run. They scored only 6 goals and all of them are against big 6.
2 vs ManUtd,
1 vs Arsenal
1 Vs City
1 vs Chelsea
1 vs Spurs

All 5 games they lost with only 1 goal margin.

They also played against Cardiff, Palace, Brighton and didn't score a goal.
 
Mike Ashley is a disgrace. I don't know why Benitez has stayed there for such a long time with zero backing and no hope of achieving anything but survival by the skin of their teeth.

I don’t think that’s fully true. I think he’s been let down by the failure to get in at least one decent striker. They still have no goals in that team so on that that basis they will go down

Definitely agree. He is like Mourinho with a poorer squad & lesser club. Game has moved on from their negative boring football.
 
It's hilarious, he should be under far more scrutiny but he just blames everyone but himself. He's lucky he's at that shit-show of a club with Ashley in charge, otherwise he would be gone.

He likes the cult of personality some fanbases give him, he can point to the club owner as the issue while the fans are head over heels thinking they have a manager thats above them.

He knows he won't do better elsewhere, so is happy to sit there doing bare minimum being adored and blaming the owner.
 
Rule no.1 in how to survive in the Premier League - find yourself a striker that can net you 10-15 goals.

Too pragmatic approach for the modern game. His not lose rather than win approach cost Liverpool the title in 2008-09, which should not have been the case even with SAF around. Too many draws with bottom half teams.

His Newcastle plays way too cynical football, which should not be the case even with the weak squad they have.
 
He has the worst squad with the exception of Huddersfield. Yet all it takes is one run and he’s got them out of the mire. Terrible job to take on though, he could still do a job for a tier 2 club. Excellent manager.
 
Most overrated manager in the league. Newcastle fans have ready made excuse in blaming Ashley. but perhaps you need to put the blame where it belongs on Benitez. Today was a good point. Sits back at home playing his usual negative tripe, then blames ref & everyone else for losing. I don't like Mike Dean but he was correct in sending off & not giving a penalty for Perez colliding into a defender.
