Radja Nainggolan

I'd love to sign him but think we're just being used to negotiate a better contract.
I dont get this. If its Madrid I can understand they can pay you the same if not more than United. But Roma cant do shit financially when compared to us? So what ever you can get at Roma, United can pay more.

Is this guy not the same guy we are linked to every single Summer?
Along with Ronaldo, Bale, Gaitan, etc?

Angling for a better contract doesn't necessarily mean he wants more money than what we can offer him. He most likely wants to stay at Roma, as he's said countless times over the past few years, but just wants more money from them.

I doubt many on here have really seen a lot of him. They just see a DM who plays for an Italian club who looks rough and assume he must be as good as Gattuso or De Rossi.

From what I've seen (a few Belgium games, admittedly less than 10 games) he has been rubbish in every single one. Has given the ball away constantly.

Considering some here didn't even want Ronaldo ffs, I think I am justified in not wanting this guy.
our best player, in the last 2 seasons

I hope (and I think) he remains, but for something like 50m€ Monchi will probably sell him

I don't know much about him but I do know he's one of the best midfielders in FIFA 17. He's a beast.

also in real football!

..some rumours about a transfer after this:

"thinking about what to do"

yes but United might not be interested and his agent may be using it to push for a better deal

Roma have sold Sarah, Parades and Manolas I think- it's not like they need the money and according to Italian football 'experts' like Horncastle the guy is very happy in Rome

I don't think so my friend.

He had his best season with us as the midfield link between the defensive midfielder (Carrick) and the front line players. He also had a great season as a man marker in the middle of the pack (vs Eden Hazard at Old Trafford quickly comes to mind).

Herrera is actually weak as a defensive midfielder compared to what he is able to do when he is given license to roam forward. He is clearly a forward thinking midfielder who is relatively poor defensively even though he makes impressive contributions in terms of putting in defensive shifts (e.g tracking back, tackling and intercepting) in midfield.

Why would any manager want to put Herrera right in front of the back four and ask him to sit there as a DM? That would be a waste. I remember the games where he was chosen to replace Carrick last season. He never stood out in those games. Yes, he did enough but he was never exceptional. What we need is a Carrick type of replacement who can dovetail between being a defensive/holding midfielder and also a central midfielder (like Carrick does so well) who can dictate play. Herrera is a work horse with a football brain. He can be brilliant as the midfielder who runs around and links up the back and the front. He can offer defensive support to allow a Pogba to be creative and attack minded. He can pick up the ball from a DM and take it to the attackers. He cannot be the player you saddle with the responsibility of shielding the back four throughout the season.

Think about it. Look back at last season. What stands out for Herrera? That brilliant tracking of Hazard. That through pass to Rashford that killed Chelsea. That lunge forward against Chelsea to score his own goal. That incredible through ball to Mikhi against Tottenham that led to a goal. That lob to Zlatan that led to the decisive goal against Southampton in the EPL final. That pass to Zlatan against Sunderland that led to a goal. etc.

For Herrera, it is always when he is able to serve as the link between the backline/ defensive midfield and the attacking players. That's when his star shines brightest.
I totally disagree about his defending being even relatively poor. Even on his whoscored page his key strength is listed as defensive contribution. His energy and intelligence make him terrific as the dm. His passing from deep positions adds better penetration going forward as well.

Herrera doesn't have the positional sense to be a sole DM. Its like telling Vidal to play there.

Over the course of the first half of last season I was of a similar opinion, that he was unsuited to the task of holding his position and needed to be free to press higher up the park.

I have to disagree at this point though, as the season went on he put in one disciplined performance after another and was exceptional, and ended the season overall as our best player in my opinion.

Fabinho, Matic, Dier are all good holding players, but Herrera showed himself to be as good if not better than them all in that position last year - there certainly isn't a clear upgrade and we don't need one.

Our options for the advanced midfield position last year were far less impressive. What we got from Fellaini, Mkhitaryan, Rooney and the few games Pogba had there is what we should be striving to improve on.

Nainggolan would be an appealing signing as he interprets the position in a similar way to Fellaini or Vidal as a no.10 who can comfortably drop in and graft when required. This would provide a solution to Mourinho's need to have a trio of strong and disciplined midfielders for games against teams of similar or more quality.

We will have to agree to disagree on this then. I did not say Herrera is weak defensively. I said COMPARED to his attacking and when he is allowed to roam forward. Go all the way back to his days in Spain, look at his best moments at United and you'll see that tieing him down to a DM position will limit him. In my dream team, I will never play Andre Herrera as my primary DM. He can deputize there once in a while when the situation demands it but he will certainly not be my DM. Fortunately, Jose seems to share the same view.

I feel like Ander's game is equally adept for holding or playing slightly further forward. He's very press-resistant, excellent first touch, and intercepts like crazy with equally mad stamina levels. Being allowed to play slightly forward doesn't really benefit his game that much. His shooting technique is very average, and whilst he has the vision and intelligence to spot runs and passes, the technique/weighting on passing isn't that consistent.

I can see him at either CM or DM to be fair, i dont think theres much in it. My feeling is we should aim for the best dm or cm, whichever we can get and play herrera in the remaining slot (plus pogba obviously).

I think his weight of pass is one of his stronger assets personally but I mostly agree. He's added discipline to his game after van gaal questioned him, and he's clearly a very intelligent guy. To say he's wasted as a DM is an exaggeration I feel, he's got everything to play the role except power and aerial strength, with the added excellent technical skill that many DMs lack.

Too old for the transfer fee's being reported. Maybe worth a punt if he was out of contract, otherwise a firm no thank you!

These sort of statements are getting tiresome now. Since when is peak age too old, especially in an age where footballers can look after themselves a lot better and play a lot longer?

If he's not good enough in your eyes to warrant the fee, then fair enough, just say that. Don't use his age as a stick to beat him with when he could easily have 5 or 6 years of top level football left in him.

Since when wasnt peak age too old. As the word suggests anyone of 29 or over is likely to get worse not better, so spending big money doesnt make sense. Our squad doesnt need (more) experience it needs quality, energy and creativity

I hope we don't go for him, he is worse than rooney when it comes to fitness, decent player but he will fall of a cliff in a year or two in terms of his on field performance and will cost nearly 40mn or so.

Rooney, Carrick and Zlatan are all either going to be gone or barely played. Our first team is going to be relatively young and inexperienced. Getting one or two players who are currently in their prime to bridge that gap is certainly understandable.

Plus Nainggolan brings those things you mention (quality, energy and to some extent creativity) far more than the majority of younger players could be expected to.

Not that it will happen. He'll be staying in Roma.

Bump, because Nainggolan is awesome and would be a great fit at United.

It's gone very quiet on this one. Hopefully we either sign him or he stays at Roma because I would be gutted if Chelsea sign him and we end up with Matic, would be disgraceful.

That sounds awful indeed. Eliminate those thoughts from your head and don't do this to yourself… or us. Nainggolan has exactly the right type of drive that is needed on the pitch.

Ok he's almost 30 years old, but he still has at least four or five great seasons in him, I'm sure of it.

Also, check this out: http://www.skysports.com/football/n...an-to-manchester-united-the-indonesian-factor

He is fantastic, wanted him for years and years. Shouldn't be a priority though, because he's not really a DM, and we already have Herrera if we want a sort-of-defensive all-rounder. Plus he is almost 30.

Herrera can be DM and Nainggolan can be b2b and Pogba playmaker

Neither Herrera or Nainggolan can reliably be DM, and both would only be using half their game if played there. We need someone truly defensive who can start there regardless of the opponent.

I disagree mate, Herrera was excellent as DM last season. One of the best stats also of defensive midfielders in the league and he reads the game excellent wich is a key ability as DM and his passing have a great range.

If we don't get a new defensive mid/deeplying playmaker/holding midfielder (like Fabinho), I do think that Herrera will be used as DM even more than he was last season.

Yes indeed, that would be great.

Agreed, it's becoming quite clear that Herrera will be moving further down the pitch as his career moves along. Offensively, he's not quite good or consistent enough for the absolute top, even though he plays marvellous key passes from time to time – the through ball assists that led to goals by Mkhitaryan (vs Spurs, December 2016) and Rashford (Chelsea, April 2017) are two vivid examples, or how about that sublime cross to Zlatan's deciding header in the EFL Cup final… but I do think that his reading/pressing/defensive side is stronger than his offensive dito as he doesn't score enough either. He'll be pushed back in the field eventually.

Delving deeper on the pitch, it's a classic :D and nothing to be ashamed of… just take a look at Glenn Strömberg, worked out fine!
