Race for top 4 | Finito.

One of the simplest ways of looking at this run in as well is we 100% would have taken this situation at the start of the season. Also, if we can’t get 9 points from Brighton, West Ham, Wolves, Bournemouth, Chelsea and Fulham then we don’t really have any business being in the champions league anyway.

For me the thinking has I be need 3 wins out of 5 games. Absolutely cannot go into last game needing a win and put that much to chance, regardless of the opponent. Win tomorrow and think that pretty much does it

I mean, from my point of view if Liverpool win their last 11 games on the bounce or whatever they damn well deserve 4th place more than we do. I don't think Fergie ever had a run like that, and he's the best ever.

We won all of our last 11 league games in 99/00 and also the first game of 00/01, so actually Fergie did have a run like that.

Hope we get the job done early so we can rest some players for the final.

Agreed, and i understand your point. But for a supposedly big team, we do get whacked quite regularly. Will heave a sigh of relief if we get this over the line.

It's like your car says that you have 40 kms worth of fuel left in the tank and your house is 25 kms away, you just know that you cannot trust your car completely :nervous:
We're a work in progress. :)

I thought this Brighton game was our game in hand but Liverpool played last night so we’ll still be a game less than them. But then just realised Chelsea is our game in hand which is being played on the 25th. Why do we keep playing games on a Thursday when the game before Chelsea we play on a Saturday. That means we’ll play Chelsea on the Thursday and then the last game of the season on Sunday. Makes no sense.

No point worrying about Liverpool. We just need to make sure that we pick up 9 points.

Exactly. And if we can't get 9 points from 6 games, 5 of which are against weaker teams, then we have bigger problems to worry about than a Liverpool surge.
Not remotely worried by Liverpool continuing to win.

With our schedule we should be aiming to finish 3rd rather than concerning ourselves with anybody below Us.

Will Mitrovic be back for the final game of the season against us? It would be quite the story if he got a last minute equaliser to stop us getting top 4. He’d become a Demba Ba type cult hero for the scousers

He won't have played for over 2 months by then. I'm sure he might play some part in the game, but he won't be coming into the it completely match fit after an absence that long.

Nice to see Liverpool are back to getting penalties for no reason

First of all, Mitrovic scored a brace against Liverpool in their draw earlier this season. If anything, we should be thankful to him for doing that and then putting himself out of action for a long time before potentially facing us.

Secondly... you think the hero of that story for us is DEMBA BA?! The guy who basically had a tap in and not the glorious captain who slipped? Might as well make Willian the hero for scoring the second goal.

I hardly knew the man, bye sep. :(

Anyway back to the post that broke him. I made three key points with a little bit (not a lot) of wumming:

1. Klopp has seen the Europa in his first season and got to the final
2. ETH didn't get to the final
3. We play kids in the Europa usually

I'm sure my list was offensive to the normally stoic sep and he "would never ban anyone" but went out on that.
I am happy for you that you enjoy the Europa League. I bet you cannot wait next year.

I wouldn’t be too surprised if we balls this up. Agree the next two games are important to avoid a potential crumble.

We've got games in hand, but 4 points behind certainly a little worrying. They were miles behind just a few weeks ago.

3 wins and a 1 draw from our final 6 games gets us top 4. It would be a royal feck-up if we don't manage that, but it's concerning that we're not playing particularly well. Usually we have a decent but wasteful 1st half, and then shit the bed in the 2nd half.

If we're not going to finish top 4, I'd honestly rather we finish 9th or something. I can't stand the Europa League.

Only 4 games left for Liverpool though, that’s the key. If they win them all (and they probably won’t), you’ll still only need 3 wins from 6 games. I think it will be comfortable.

Why is this a bad thing? We could lose next two games and still be 4 ahead? It’s a great position to be in even for the most pessimistic of fans.
Stop scaring yourselves for no reason

Since Klopp moaned about United getting decisions a couple of years ago, we've got basically feck all too. His influence on the officials is extreme.

How many Premier League penalties have United got the last 2 seasons? And how many opposition players sent off?

We are getting top 4 even if we lose our next two games. Which we won't.
Hopefully yeah. Our habit of giving away comfortable leads recently is the only thing that concerns me. Doesn't help that Liverpool are being helped along the way, they should be at least 4 points worse off than they are over the past few weeks. If we are going into the final 4 needing to win 3 you wouldn't be a bit worried?

I'm not really into conspiracies, but this one is hard to argue.
We had quite a few, then he whined, since then basically nothing…

For that to happen, we would have to lose 2 games on the bounce for the first time since that opening 2 fixtures of the season. Whilst I think our levels have dipped since our peak this season, I do think ETH has instilled a resolve that would stop us from losing to both West Ham and Brighton. It may not be pretty, and there may be some heart in mouth moments, but I'd back us.

Worst case scenario and we do lose both matches, I think we get 3 wins from the final 4 games regardless tbh.

And the amount of stone wall penalties we have had turned down is worrying. When Weghorst got booted by the Nottingham Forest player it was waved away, Nunez threw himself over the Fulham defenders eh yesterday and the ref pointed to the spot. Strange

There still seems to be this notion amongst United fans that this squad are mentally weak. I don't think we've had any luck at all really this season. The fixture congestion has been nothing if not mentally challenging, and yet we've reached two cup finals, a quarter final, and are in a comfortable top 4 position. It's time to give credit where credit is due

Bruno's, clearly offside goal, against Citeh? But I do take your point.
Like you, I feel that we've managed well this season and with a degree of mental fortitude, especially when rallying after the humbling defeats we suffered against L/Pool, A. Madrid, Brentford & Brighton.

May I speak for those of us who remain worried by top 4. Most of us believe we will do it, it's just that the chances of us fecking it up are non-negligible and not to be dismissed.

I saw lots of comment about how we've sewn it up after Villa. Um, lose tonight against Brighton (and the bookies make that the most likely option) and then we face West Ham away in a tricky match where we can easily drop points.

Then everyone's arses will start to twitch, and rightly so because that will be absolutely huge pressure on the last 4 games.

Also, if we can’t get 9 points from Brighton, West Ham, Wolves, Bournemouth, Chelsea and Fulham then we don’t really have any business being in the champions league anyway.
I've never understood this logic. So if we don't get top 4 it's OK because we've demonstrated we're not good enough for the champions league? Not much of a consolation, I have to say. It also doesn't factor in potentially huge improvements next season after a summer of strengthening.

Here’s my counter, we should be worried v Brighton because of match odds but when we’re favourites v West Ham it means little?
We’ve always followed a loss with a win this season, you’re not basing this on logic of any kind

If we lose tonight then we beat West Ham, one thing I’ve noticed with ETH is that he always gets a response from the team after losing. Don’t think we’ve ever lost 2 in a row under him. I might be wrong though.

The hilarious thing is people change their opinion on “who is getting 4th” after every single Spurs, Newcastle, Utd and Liverpool result.

I don’t know why your arses are going either. If we can’t win 3 games in 6 then we don’t deserve to qualify for the Champions League because that will be an Arsenal style collapse.

I’m not really arsed about CL footy next season anyway. The Glazers selling is far more important for the long term future.

Newcastle needs 7 points to 100% secure top 4 spot.

They play Arsenal (H) Leeds (A) Brighton (H) Leicester (H) Chelsea (A) some tricky fixtures there with all apart from Chelsea with something to play for.
