Race for top 4 | Finito.

No we didn’t. Match week 30. They were 3 points behind us. Both having played the same amount of games.

Wrong. We were 3 ahead with a game in hand. They had just drawn to Southampton and Everton too. Last week they were in the top four was 28, where they were 2 points ahead of Newcastle having played two games more.

Good to see Villa get back some winning momentum today going into the Liverpool game.

I still can't shake the feeling one of us or Newcastle is bottling this and Liverpool win 3/3.

we need to win two games, Newcastle can afford 5 points that would be just perfect as Newcastle GD is better than Liverpool as long as win 2 of our last 3 games.

The Bournemouth game is still very important. We really need to win that. As good as we are at OT we can’t be relying on winning those 2 games. Chelsea are bound to decide to turn up against us and Fulham are no mugs, probably another team who see us as their cup final after the FA Cup game .

You literally just said we had 3 games in hand which was bollocks. Now you’re making another point which is wrong again.

Just look at the table game week 30, probably easier for you. 3 points behind. Same games played.

Bruno's miss while leading 2-1 at Spurs, Shaw handball in 95th minute at Brighton, De Gea's howler vs West Ham. If just one of these 3 moments didn't happen, we'd already be much closer. But 3 points today were really big.

Newcastle atm need 5 out of 9 points which is doable. Beat Leicester at home, draw vs Brighton and at Chelsea and that's enough, if they keep better GD than Liverpool.

Liverpool will surely win 2 of their last 3 games, it's just a question of if they'll win all 3. While I fancy Leicester to do well against Liverpool, I'm worried they'll be too bad at the back to actually get a result out of that game. Then there's Villa, they're fighting for European spots with Spurs and Brighton but the game will be at Anfield, you'd again expect Liverpool to win that game. Southampton are already relegated otherwise I'd back them to surprise Liverpool.

Also, Liverpool could improve their GD more in last three games so it's not given Newcastle will have better goal difference than them come end of the season.

With United it's obvious as we have poor goal difference so have to win 2 out of last 3 games.

You'd expect this to go to the final day of the season, whether it's two or all three teams involved by then.

Another point is there's only a short gap between the last 2 games, we play Chelsea on Thursday and Fulham on Sunday so we'll be heading into that last game fatigued.

Yep why it's vital to win next week, but we have a week off now so hopefully we get it done.

It shows you how woeful Liverpool have been this season that they're still 4 points behind us, with all that stuff above happening.

I said about. I didn’t know exactly and was exaggerating.

We’d played 29 games after gameweek 30 was played. You can go count them up if you want.

My positive side says that it wouldn't surprise me if we can seal it with a win at Bournmouth, or at least just need a point from out last 2 games.

My negative side keeps looking at our goal difference and hopes it doesn't come back to bite us.. Newcastle and us win one & draw two of our last 3 games, Liverpool win all three of their games, we all on end on 71 points, and we miss out..

Very unlikely, just a shame our GD is so bad.

Yeah the GD cost us taking third place today

Don't get me wrong, I'll take a scraping ill deserved dodgy 96th min pen in the final game to see us in!

But you can't imagine anyone would have turned down a guaranteed scenario for a champions league spot from this position if offered it in the summer.
I find myself hoping and praying we'll make it through games we're leading in rarely confident we won't gift the opposition a goal(s). Gone well past the stage of this CL-qualifying being a noble pursuit; it's just a nail-biting rollercoaster I hope we don't flung off of!

We just need to do the business against Bournemouth who have nothing to play for and were shit enough to lose against Chelsea and we’re fine. This place loves to panic but the fact remains that Liverpool are under exponentially more pressure than either of the two teams above them, any slip up and they are fecked and they aren’t winning games comfortably despite picking up the points to feel confident, even with their fixtures.

We will be fine. Bournemouth are safe now there players will be on the beach after weeks of pressure. Chelsea being shite all season will probably get a point of us and that would be it. Or else it’s going into last game vs daniel james punishing us for selling him so cavani can have his number.

Yeh I think it's going to be the Villa game where they slip up if it's going to be anyone. Just have to hope we get a win against Bournemouth like you said.

I Have to admit I hope we're not having to pick up points in the last game against Fulham. I know it's a home, but I think there's some bad blood, on their side, because of the 3 sendings off during the Cup game at OT, and in particular the one that got Mitrovic a lengthy ban. I read a piece written by William the other week and he's still seething about the decision that got him a red card, even though the fecker handled the ball on the line!

Hope we've secured top 4 before then as I've got a horrible feeling they'll raise their game exponentially just to right some imagined injustice.

The thing with Bournemouth is I'm sure they'll lose at Everton. But this game against us is their last home game of the season and you'd think they'll be motivated enough to finish season with a good performance after doing great job to survive. We'll have to play really well and especially with our away form.

The Bournemouth one is the game I’m not that confident about. Really hope we get the win there though, I want the last game against Fulham to be a no pressure game. If Liverpool draw does that mean we only need 1 more win and a draw?

Yes.

And if they lose then one more win is enough.

Bournemouth is really shit. Since securing safety, they’ve lost to Chelsea and Palace, shipping 5 and scored one. Unless Solanke decides to do his old club a favour and turns into prime Henry on the day, we will be fine, provided we can buy a goal somewhere.

Seems every year Liverpool are in a last day rush doesnt it?

Except it's usually against the correct Manchester club for the correct position (1st). This season has been such a shite anomaly for us. :(

Once again, you’d be right if it was true. You’ve completely forgot or (ignored) the fact spurs played Newcastle and got tonked by them. Spurs did have it in their own hands. So yeah back to my original point….spurs really have messed it up. And the only point you made was they haven’t been in it since October which you plucked out of thin air.

The games we have left is gonna help us for sure given all teams have nothing to play for which should see a drop in intensity.

Fulham and Bournemouth will be similar to wolves. It helps we have two at home. Chelsea is the odd one because theyve been horrific with lampard in charge but it's still Chelsea who have been our premier league bogey team since the 90s.

Also with garnacho and varane back, + Shaw back to lb, our top midfield trio to use and the one game a week, we should see this through, possibly with a chance for third

Chelsea the easiest game we have left and will be the game we confirm top 4 in.

When does it go to five CL places?

What happens if city win the CL? Or does nothing change and the current top 4 still get into the CL? Is it only if an English team wins the Europa and doesn’t finish top 4 that there’s 5 English teams in the CL?

The anomaly was you winning the title. Once in a lifetime title.

Who do we want to join us in the top 4?

If Liverpool do it, they get a feel good factor back. They become more attractive to nee signing and next season becomes difficult again to surpass them, City or even
Arsenal.

If Newcastle do it. Suddenly you can see a future Man City situation. One of the richest owners in world football who can buy whoever he likes and potentially dominate the league with City for the next decade. Us, pool, Chelsea and Arsenal/ spurs fighting for top 4.

Newcastle. Newcastle are gonna get where they're gonna get regardless, they didn't even expect to finish in the CL places this season.

Whereas Liverpool did. And they're Liverpool. So let them enjoy the Europa League for a year.

Brighton (and Hove Albion)

Completely agree with this. Getting CL doesn't change anything in terms of player purchase for any of the three clubs.

Utd will continue buying who they need, they bought Antony, Casemiro and Varane regardless. No seriously big player will want to go to Newcastle just yet, CL or no CL, as they will wait and see what's happening with that 'project'.

And players like Tchoumani, Caicedo, Mac Allister, etc will want to play for Klopp regardless of CL. But we often can't afford too many of them anyway so CL won't make a huge difference despite us losing out on some of the money.

Nothing changes.
