SAF: "We're not lying on our backsides doing nothing. We're trying hard to bring other players to the club."

Wow he's talking a lot about transfers. Pity the mirror story was a lie though. Hope we still get Lucas

Well he aint going to confirm anything until a deal is 100% done. I would say his comments sound very positive though

SAF: "It's not 100% Evans&Vidic will start the season. Jonny will start running today. Vida and Phil Jones started full training today."

12:54 Sir Alex on Chinese fans' reception: "As we expected, there's a great enthusiasm for Manchester United from the fans. We're very pleased with that." (NC)

12:52 Sir Alex is asked whether he would have considered signing Drogba on a free: "The decision was his anyway. He said he was going to leave Chelsea and not play again in England. So that eliminated everyone." (NC)

12:51 Rio on Shanghai Shenhua: "We're looking forward to playing Shanghai. It's a great game for both clubs. Shanghai get to see where they're at and the main focus for us is to get through the game unscathed and step up our fitness. There's a lot of interest because of Drogba and Anelka but for us it's just another game." (NC)

12:49 Sir Alex on more signings: "We've signed two players in the summer - Kagawa and Powell. We think they both have fantastic potential. At this moment we're looking at other options in terms of bringing other players in. We're not lying on our backsides doing nothing. We're trying hard to bring other players to the club." (NC)

Excellent so that means Moura is one of those other options.

12:59 Rio on playing in China one day: "I think when you get to my age, if you look too far ahead your legs can get taken beneath you. All I'm interested in is playing for United. It's what I enjoy. Pre-season began well. I'm just thinking about this season and playing for Manchester United. I'm obviously very happy here and not looking at going anywhere else." (NC)

12:58 Sir Alex on Chelsea: "I think the owners have got their enthusiasm back. Having won the Champions League there's more expectation on them now. That was the trophy Roman always wanted to win, so he's invested in the team again this summer. It's a challenge for us, I suppose, and we always respect Chelsea. You just have to wait and see how good these players are." (NC)

12:56 Sir Alex on Darren Fletcher: "Darren has a medical situation that he's trying hard to keep under control. We don't expect him back immediately but hopefully he does come back at some point. Paul Scholes, a year ago, was coaching my Reserves. Now he's back playing and everybody attached to United is delighted. He's such a fantastic player. In the long-term, trying to replace Scholes is very difficult. To replace a great player like him would be hard for anyone. We always hope somebody turns up through the ranks of United, from the Academy. We've also signed the young boy Powell. We hope he devlops into a top-class centre midfield player because he has very good potential." (NC)

12:47 Sir Alex on reports United have agreed to sign Lucas Moura: "It's not correct. We haven't reached an agreement for the player. We've shown an interest but until such time a we get a deal agreed we can't say he's our player." (NC)

12:46 Sir Alex on Kagawa: "On the training ground he never needs an explanation. After one demonstration he picks it up right away. The language isn't a problem. A good footballer can pick up what's needed. He's been fantastic in that respect. I've been quite surprised at that." (NC)

12:45 Rio on Shinji Kagawa: "I've been very, very impressed. I'd seen him play for Dortmund on TV and I looked on YouTube. He's been fantastic. He's quick, he's sharp, he has great awareness, he plays off both feet. I'm excited about playing with him and getting the season started. He's been one of the better players in Germany for the last few years. I think he'll bring that form to Manchester United. I think he'll be a great acquisition." (NC)

12:43 Sir Alex begins by talking about how he'll cover Chris Smalling's injury. "It's not 100% Jonny Evans and Nemanja Vidic will start the season. Jonny will start running today. Vida and Phil Jones started full training today, which is very positive. If I can keep Rio fit, then Vidic and Jones should give us ample cover." (NC)

Nice one Stan.

Good presser, that. Promising news regarding injuries and Kagawa and the Lucas comments are very interesting indeed.

Seems odd, Fergie confirming interest in players through media. Not sure if he is quietly confident or using the media to his advantage.

He's gone a bit 'Arry with the transfers recently hasn't he.

I am certain that he is using the media for his own advantage; im convinced he wants RVP but doesnt want to get into a bidding war so he's letting RVP know that he's interested & that by talking about the other bids, he's showing RVP that United are intending to win trophies through investment and good management

Maybe he decided the keeping schtum method doesn't work after the failings of previous seasons so he tries to make his targets feel more wanted/in the public eye by using the media? Just a thought.

Heard there was supposed to be a pre-Barca match press conference today at 2.30pm. Any news?

Heard there was supposed to be a pre-Barca match press conference today at 2.30pm. Any news?

13:30 Wayne: "It's great to be in Gothenburg, especially for the likes of myself and the other players who have just returned. We need to get our fitness up to speed. We're playing against Barcelona and that's a game we're really looking forward to."

Mike Phelan: "Every game we play is important but it's still just part of our pre-season. Obviously it's an attractive fixture for our fans and we hope it's a good spectacle for the people of Gothenburg. We hope the weather improves and everybody enjoys themselves."

13:31 Wayne: "It's great to play in big games and Barcelona is one of them. It's all part of our preparation and we need to make sure we do the right things. We want to enjoy the game and get our fitness ready for the first game of the season. The result, in some ways, isn't the most important thing. What's important is the fitness and the sharpness. I'm happy with how I'm doing. I've been training for almost two weeks and I've been working hard. Everything's going well so far."

13:32 Nemanja: "We have two new players with us. We've improved a bit in the middle. Nick Powell and Shinji Kagawa have done well so far. We've had more experience than last year. We had some young players play a lot of games last season and they'll have learned a lot. We all learned. In Europe we've had so much success in recent years - we've had three finals, a semi-final - and maybe we relaxed a bit last season. We were punished last season and we can't allow that to happen again. We had a few injuries last season too. I hope everyone can stay fit this season. The young players can learn from last year, so I'm confident we'll be better this year."

13:33 Nemanja: "It's hard to take when you lose the league in the last few minutes, but we don't think about that now. We've had success in the past as well, but we forget about that too. We move forward. That's something we've always been good at. Now we're training hard and we're playing Barcelona, who are a great team. We can test ourselves to see where we are."

13:34 Mike Phelan: "I think there is a gap there [between United and Bareclona]. But there's a gap for a lot of teams, not just ourselves. Barcelona have been exceptional - they've combined experience and youth and maintained success. The challenge for us is to compete. It will take time but we're not that far away. We've been in three European finals and we've won one. Now we're hungry to continue that. Barcelona are the ones to catch."

13:35 Wayne on Usain Bolt reportedly wanting a trial with United: "He'd obviously add a bit of speed to the team. But they are different sports. I think he's best staying on the track!"

13:36 Wayne on Kagawa: "Shinji's settled quite quickly. He's a talented player, he likes to get on the ball and keep it simple. He's very effective on the ball. It's great to have that sort of player in the team. I'm looking forward to playing with him and I think he'll create a lot of chances for myself and the other forwards. It's exciting to have him in the team."

13:37 Wayne: "I feel good. I played two games at Euro 2012, I've since played against Valerenga. Everybody needs games to get up to match fitness - not just me. I'm training well, though, and I'm looking forward to the next few games. Hopefully by the start of the season I'll be ready to play."

13:38 Nemanja: "We have a lot of players in defence. But that's good for the team. The last two years we've had a lot of injuries in defence and we've had to bring Michael Carrick into that position sometimes. But I believe this year we'll all be in good shape and we'll do the best we can to help the team do well."

13:39 Wayne: "We haven't been here that long. It's obviously a nice city and it's great that two of the biggest teams in the world can play a game here. It's exciting. We just want to put on an exciting game. We don't get to see much, though. We just train and stay at the hotel."

13:40 Mike Phelan: "As a club, you look at the issues that may have caused injuries. Some of those are created on the pitch and there's not a lot you can do about that. Maybe some have crept in through overuse or overwork but we've analysed those things and we're sure our players are prepared for what's always a hard league. All of these players are preparing for what could be a season of 60-plus games. That takes time, obviously. What we try and get to is a point where everybody is fit for selection in the first game of the season."

13:42 Mike Phelan: "At the moment, Chris Smalling is going to be a bit longer in his recovery. He's had a setback, an injury, and he's progressing slowly. Jonny Evans will hopefully be available when we get back [from Europe]. He's back doing light work on the training ground. We hope he'll be available for the start of the season. He won't have had the games under his belt but if he's fit and progressing well we'll push him forward."

Thanks, Damo, from the likes of myself and also Wayne Rooney. :D

Presser today at 12:30, the usual pre-match one (not specially arranged).

I wonder what will be discussed.

Sticking my neck out.But probably about R.V.P , business as concluded and hopefully something more on Henriquez.

Man Utd will officially unveil Robin van Persie at a press conference with Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford at 2pm today.

I have no idea whether this replaces the usual pre-match one. I assume not.

Sir Alex: "We managed to get the contract signed and lodged with the Premier League before 12 midday. It was a bit of a rush for us and it was a long day for Robin yesterday by the time he got to the hospital for examinations. That's all completed now and we're delighted to annnounce he's a United player. It's a great day for the club."

RvP: "I'm proud to be here looking forward to achieving big things with Manchester United. It makes me proud. As I said Arsenal are a big club but for me it's a big challenge to get to know players here. I had a good session this morning, I noticed every single player was really helpful. It's a friendly club like I'm used to so it's not a big difference. And of course the language is the same."

14:12 The press conference to unveil Robin van Persie is now in progress, with a delighted Sir Alex joining his new signing on the top table. Look out for updates here shortly. (AB)

14:02 As Nick mentioned earlier (12:13), Sir Alex has been speaking about Darren Fletcher’s fitness and his return to first team training. The boss also spoke about his defensive options for Monday’s trip to Goodison Park. You can read the full story here. (MF)

Lets hope we dont lose any more players

"From my side and from Arsenal's side there are no hard feelings. It's just uncertain elements that we had a different view on. That's life.

"No one is angry at me and I'm not angry at them. My view on certain elements are not similar to Arsenal…that's life. Sometimes you have a disagreement on things.

"In my football life this is the biggest challenge so far."
