It just means that he still have faith on Ando and have high hope on him and Cleverley.

Given SAF's comments on Kagawa's position, it seems we're definitely playing him behind the striker (or possibly on the left) without tinkering with our formation much.

Does anyone else see Powell starting a few league games in CM here and there towards the end of the season, or just a few cameo and cup appearances? If his position position is CM, I have a feeling we won't look into bringing in another CM this summer.

If we were to sign one player, would you have an LB or a CM?

"Oh you"

Seriously, are you off your fecking rocker? Do you think Fergie wouldn't be able to spot weakness in our side, a weakness that we have had for 3 seasons? I'm sure that he could have signed a midfielder if he wanted to, though he has said Nick Powell is a CM to be fair.

Yep, if we can see it from watching tv and going to games, I'm sure he can see it.

Sir Alex press conference over. Robbie Brady will be used as a left-back on tour, and perhaps this season.

Robbie Brady to play left-back tomorrow and Lingard involved. Kagawa debut behind Chicha

Sir Alex says Vidic and Smalling should be fit for start of season. Maybe not Evans

Defenders making progress

United's injury problems at the back are expected to ease before the new season gets underway in earnest next month.

The Reds took only one senior defender on tour, Rio Ferdinand, for a variety of reasons but Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Chris Smalling and Nemanja Vidic are making good progress, even if Jonny Evans could miss the start of the campaign.

"Evans has had an operation," stressed the boss in Durban. "I'm not sure he'll start the season but he won't be far away. Vidic will start the season. I am sure of that. He's still at that level of doing a good amount of training but not the competitive level that the other lads are at. He's better off staying at Carrington.

"Smalling has done a bit of training. He had a ruptured groin muscle which needed a lot of attention but he's made gradual progress and we expect him to start the season."

Good to see Ferguson is sure Smalling and Vidic will start the season, but disappointing to read Evans won't be fit.

However, Fergie sometimes doesn't speak the truth about injuries, so don't be surprised if we start the season with Rio and Jones at Goodison Park.

Modmins, any chance to stick this thread?

I cant see us insisting on a winger as Evra's sole cover.

Maybe he wants to convert Brady like Valencia did with Alba, better than wasting about 15 million on Baines.

Sir Alex reveals team plans

Sir Alex has revealed the team news ahead of Wednesday's opening DHL tour game against AmaZulu.

Speaking after arriving in Durban, the boss revealed there will be a mix of youth and experience on show with Robbie Brady handed the chance to impress at left-back.

The winger has played there for the Reserves and is set to start, with Jesse Lingard operating further up the pitch and Shinji Kagawa making his debut.

"The priority is to get the experienced players fit but young players will play in each game. It's likely that Kagawa will start with Chicharito.

"Michael Carrick, Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes will play. So too Anders Lindegaard, Lingard and Brady at left-back. Antonio Valencia will play.

"Brady is an outside-left but we believe there's a possibility he will develop into a left-back. It's an area which we're paying attention to as Patrice Evra has played an average of 45 games in the last few seasons. So it's important for Fabio to get experience at QPR because, touch wood, Evra is never injured.

"The opportunities weren't there for Fabio and he needed more opportunities. With him away at QPR, we're a bit short at left-back so that's why we're trying Brady there. We also have Tyler Blackett with us. He's a strong boy, tall and quick and he has time on his side. He is here for the experience.

"We expect a difficult game. AmaZulu will be well motivated to play us on such a special day [Nelson Mandela day].

"The first thing we always try to do with the pre-season tour is to get everyone fit and try to avoid injuries. The priority is to get the players match-fit. That gives us a platform to say that, come the first day of the season, we are ready."

For such change to be successful then we'll have to play him week in week out, and suffer all the consequences that such change would have. Are we ready to do that? I doubt it.

I prefer Blackett to be honest. He's younger but at least he's a natural left back.

I don't think he's quite ready yet.
Seems Fergie does think so as well...

Brady is a winger and have little first team experience.

He's experienced first team football at championship level, that gives him an advantage over someone like Blackett, regardless of what position he played in.
