Press conference and other interviews thread

I don't know what further context there was, but taken at face value, that statement is simply true. What else was said that bothered you about this?
The fact that it sounds like a ready-made excuse, I'm guessing.

Of course not, but that's just half of that argument. Do you think Slot inherited a great team?
I suppose it defines how you define 'great', but it's a squad that's well-balanced and that's good enough for third. Taken loosely, that fits 'great'.

Slot inherited a better and more stable team and environment

Team that largely overperformed in last few years and finished third last season relying on one player scoring big percent of their goals who is also getting old and that will probably leave them sooner or later. Team that is backed by total of minus 5 million euros this summer. What a great and stable enviroment.

Well if you think that team that finishes third in EPL and gets beaten in quarter finals of Europa League is great then you have no idea what you are talking about. There are no two ways about some team being called great team however you wanted to pack it.

'Great' is often used in a throwaway sense, especially in conversation. This isn't a formal essay, it's a journalist asking a question. Not everything deserve this kind of scrutiny.

Its pretty clear Slot inherited a better team than EtH. Surprised you're even trying to debate it. Its not the best Liverpool team ever but its miles better than what EtH inherited in his first season.

Ten Hag on Shaw and Hojlund

"Rasmus Hojlund and Luke Shaw are progressing very well but not ready."

Ten Hag on Ronaldo's comments

"He said that Manchester United can’t win the Premier League. He said this if you read the article very well. He's far away in Saudi, far away from Manchester. Everyone can have an opinion. It's okay."

More from Ten Hag on Ronaldo

"[It] doesn't impact me, I know in the process where we are, where we're going."

Ten Hag on the process

"We're in the transition period, we have to integrate a lot of young players in the team. We have to bring the injuries back in the team. Before anyone thinks about excuses, we have to win every game, I know that, the team knows this. We will focus on every game and have the mindset we have to win."

Ten Hag on United's start to the season

"We will see where we are in May. It is very early in the season and it is about winning trophies, being as high as possible in the league, do everything to win every game."

More from Ten Hag on United's process

"Of course, when we see the scores nobody is happy. But the players have a very good sense of the process. We are in a good position. But we have to improve and we have to step up."

Ten Hag on Ugarte

"Manuel Ugarte, you will have seen he played for Uruguay, he returned this afternoon [Thursday], he was the only player who returned today, the rest yesterday, so he is available for this game."

Ten Hag on Mount and Hojlund returning to training

"It's very good news they are back in the pitch. They are back in team training, we have to decide whether they are fit enough to start [on Saturday] but it is very pleasing they are fit and back in the squad."

More from Ten Hag on Mount and Hojlund

"We have so many games in this block to cover, so very very happy. We have to make the final call, they did a couple of training, we have to see how they recover and tomorrow they will make the final call."

Ten Hag on the importance of managing injury issues

"Careful and top football: you always go to boundaries. It's not avoidable but when you have a full squad available then it's easier to manage the load when you are in circusmtances like last season and there is a need to play, we have to overload them. We hope we can integrate them in a very careful way."

Ten Hag on United's 4-0 defeat to Palace in May

"It was a 4-0, totally deserved, but Saturday will be different. I don't compare (situations). From February onwards we had to find 11 players to construct a team. Now it is 18 and we can pick one."

Ten Hag on how United improved after the 4-0 at Palace in May

"Maybe you can also compare it with the FA Cup final. Don't compare it. The circumstances in that moment in the season, from February on, we had to find every time 11 players who can construct a team and now we are in a different place, we have 18 players and we can pick a team."

"No, the noise is only coming from the media, from some of you, not all of you, creating stories and fairytales, bringing lies because I know we're on one page within this club. I said before the break but several journalists probbaly didn't believe me. Within the club, it's quiet."

English journalists with lies and fairytales colour me shocked!

I want this man gone but somehow the players (going by their interviews) seem very confident in him. Dalot's one earlier in the season and Evans's one recently too.

Those are the ones that tend to sow a seed of doubt in my heart ... and then I watch them play ...

Chelsea press conference:

Van Nistelrooy on his situation at the club and whether he will be in charge on Sunday:
"I am guessing that too, as I said I was told it is going to be a short job as an interim, I was happy with that, I felt that I was called upon to help the club in the situation and obviously it was difficult, Erik had to leave, with mixed feelings but you have to switch the mindset to win, at the end 75,000 people waiting and millions watching at home. That is what we try to do and same on Sunday."

Van Nistelrooy on his future:
"I decided to come back here for a very important reasons, that I am here as an assistant, I came here to help the club forward and I am still very motivated to do so in any capacity, as an assistant and now an interim and after that I go back to my assistant contract. I am very motivated to stay here and help the club forward."

Van Nistelrooy on if he had spoken to Erik ten Hag:
"Yes I saw him Monday here and spoke to him before the game, he is very disappointed and touched. He cared for the club, the first conversations we had, I felt he cared and loved the club and wanted to bring the club forward. That is where we connected. He is also proud of his achievements here."

Van Nistelrooy on why it did not work out with Erik ten Hag:
"In the end, it is also clear in football that is the results and Erik also said, in pre-season we had new staff and all were very positive and all working hard to bring the club forward. There are things you can’t explain sometimes. I also remember the Brighton goal we scored and then you concede the 2-1, so many games we felt we could get a better result, talking Palace, West Ham, Porto, Fenerbahce but we also know it is about results and that is part of our job."

Van Nistelrooy on if he expects to stay as assistant:
"We will see but it is the contract situation I am in and my desire to help the club forward. I can speak to you about my side of the story and after, when the new manager is signing and conversations take place, we have to see how things develop."

Van Nistelrooy on Sporting manager Ruben Amorim:
"Is he already announced? So we don’t know. Again, what the future will bring, we will see."

Van Nistelrooy details Sir Alex Ferguson conversation:
"Yes, I spoke to him. He wished me luck. We spoke shortly about my situation, shortly about the team and most of all he wished me luck before the game. It’s always great to speak to him."

Van Nistelrooy: We have to perform better than we are at the moment
"I think what is the most important is that the task is to get the maximum out of these players. "I think it is a great challenge for us as staff and players to push ourselves to that level. "Over a Premier League season will give us a very clear picture of where the club is in this moment ahead of next season and the seasons to come. "It is a big challenge and everybody is convinced that we can and we have to perform better than we are at the moment."

PAOK press conference:

on Leny Yoro returning to training:
"He's been managed very well since his injury in pre-season. We knew it would be a long one. It's a big moment for him, that first time he is back in team training. Obviously we will get him back partially over the coming weeks and look to get him back as quickly as possible."

on Marcus Rashford being pictured training alone:
"He did a bit of extra work before the session on his own. No special news on that one."

on whether he has spoken to incoming manager Ruben Amorim:
"No, I haven't spoken with him. No contact so far, so no changes in that. I don't know when either."

on his own future:
"It's difficult to comment on that now, I am waiting for conversations to take place. In the meantime the most important thing is getting the work done on a daily basis and in the game tomorrow in Europe. I have to say that I feel the responsibility to do well over the next week and that is my job. I am focused on that.
"I welcome Ruben, I am happy to help him and that is the situation at the moment. "

on injuries in the squad:
"Tyrell [Malacia] is the furthest at the moment. He's been back in team training for a few weeks now, no restrictions. It is good for him to plan game minutes, maybe in the under-21s.
"Harry [Maguire] is still inside working on his rehab and Luke [Shaw] is doing pitch work like he did today. He's progressing there to doing partial team training soon."

on whether his long-term successor Ruben Amorim will find success with the current squad:
"I'm so focused on the present, to comment on that is very difficult. I'm putting all my energy into the current squad.
"To relate it to his playing style is a question I can't answer because I am so focused on getting results going. It is a vital two games for the season. I think I am doing the new manager the best favour by doing that. "

on changes at the club:
"Things have changed quickly and massively so to manage that was a big task. Now things have sort of calmed down and we are focused on the two performances we can build on. Tomorrow we must play with the same passion and commitment."

on scoring goals:
"I am not worried because we are creating the chances. With the talent we have, and they're still young, we have a lot of potential. The key thing with scoring goals is confidence and these guys will have it."

on whether there has been a change of atmosphere since the departure of Erik ten Hag:
"I don't know, it's difficult. Of course it is mixed emotions because when he leaves it is a very sad day and the days after that you have to recover as a team and as staff.
"To go through that together, we tried everything together to make it work but we couldn't. Then you have to switch mindset. We did and you saw that against Leicester. They [the players] took responsibility that they had to improve as well.
"I think the emotion has calmed down. Players are now training and focusing on getting their performances where we want them."

on advice to striker Rasmus Hojlund:
"Stay calm and believe in himself like I do and his team-mates do. He knows he is young and promising. It is daily work that he knows will pay off. I am confident in that."

How to get the best from him?:
"The most goals are scored in the penalty area, so that is where we want to get our players most of the time. It depends on the games.
"You have to deal with the circumstances. When it is needed for him to hold up play and get players into third-man positions and play on from there, he does brilliant work. Of course, he is a guy who can change a game in a moment, like the penalty [against Chelsea]. That threat we always have."

Onana quotes:

on Erik ten Hag's dismissal:

"When I heard he was leaving obviously I felt bad," "It's not always easy for players to understand when a manager is leaving, but at the end of the day the club have to make a decision and we have to follow.
"He is a very good manager, I have a good relationship with him. Why things didn't work here is we didn't win enough games. It's simple. At a high level it's not easy, sometimes you have to pay the price. Unfortunately it was him. The players gave everything, we tried our best but it just didn't work."

on Ruben Amorim's arrival:
"I did watch the game yesterday [Sporting's win over Manchester City]. Great victory for them.
"It is a different system but my team-mates here are all pragmatic. Everyone here is capable to play in each system, so I don't think this will be any issue for us. We have big players and they will step up."

This is the best time to listen to pressers when the new guy whispers sweet nothings that make you feel all warm and cozy. Makes you hopeful and excited for the future.

The 6 to 9 months before it all starts going to shit and a manager full of excuses starts deflecting and blaming everyone and everything for their failure. :p

Is this live on MUTV or one of those ‘updates will be released from 4pm’ type of conferences?

So refreshing to hear Amorim say that the current team losees the ball too often. It's been a huge issue for us over the years and I want him to enforce this upon the players, if they can't deal with it and improve their technique, they have no place in the squad.
