Premier League Gameweek 3

So mendy gets a yellow for kicking the ball , salah does the same earlier in the half and gets nothing.

It's a red tbf but understand Chelsea's anger because of the lack of cards to Salah, Fabinho, Henderson while Chelsea got cards for every thing.

There’s a follow through by his arm though. It wasn’t a reactionary thing, he was purposely keeping the ball out with his arm. He definitely knew what he was doing which is why he’s off.

the ref decided it so he's right then? What a stupid take. Its right cos that was what was decided.

the video is slowed down and its a split second reaction after the ball deflects

Whats he meant to do? retract his arm??

Love how the analysis at HT is actually, 45 seconds. The rest is adverts.

It's so easy to fecking hate modern football.

It was deliberate, he actively moved his hand.
Don't agree, Salah on the other hand deliberately hammered the ball away and showed contempt according to the book that is a yellow. If you are going to use the book it has to go both ways. Never a red card

That's the way I saw it - the movement of the arm seemed to come after the ball had hit it, a pen is fair enough for me as it stopped a goal but the red was too much for me.

Let's hope it stays a draw though.
The double jeopardy rule correction (which only came a couple years ago) was to stop this exact situation. Think the ref has had a mare. Jaimie Redknapp at HT is equally clueless, clearly unaware of this.

The rule says something like this - the 'double jeopardy' rule, prevents two punishments of the player being sent off and a penalty being given if it is an accidental challenge

^ This wasn't a challenge, but it was a penalty because of the hand ball. I feel the handball was accidental because it was instinctive and it rolled up to his arm. That slight extension of James' arm was far too subtle to insinuate a straight red.

I presume the man in the VAR room explained everything to him over the mic, and Taylor just quickly wanted to see a glance of the footage to confirm.

Once he gives the penalty, it's going to be a red card in that situation. Seems harsh, but it's probably the right call. James looked guilty as sin before the ball went out of play.

Let's hope Chelsea can hang on, maybe get a Liverpool player sent off too. A draw would be a good result for us. I don't think we want Chelsea winning at Anfield if we believe they are going to be in the title race. This is always a ground where you want title rivals to drop points in the run-in, and so you shouldn't want them picking up three points early in the season either with the fixture taken care of.

That's a harsh red, but definitely a penalty.

feck Chelsea....and the lot who think they will just walk to the title. United got screwed over last week with a foul on Bruno leading up to an OG.

What fecks me off is that the ref didn't even look at it. He's seen the still image of the ball against James's hand and sent him off based on that. So either A) He's sent him off based on not even knowing the ball deflected up from his thigh, which is fecking laughable or B) He isn't making the decision at all himself and is walking over to the monitor purely as window dressing.

I think the stupid take is what you just took from my post.

Salah kicked the ball away but no card but Mendy booked for the same. Liverpool getting all the crucial decision

Mendy didn't get the card just for the kick. He was warned by the ref for being in Salah's face on the spot. Any more infractions and it will be a card. 2 minutes later he kicks the ball at Hendo leading to an unnecessary fracas. Cause of it? Mendy.

It’s not subtle, it’s clear as day with a follow through!

Moving on from the red card for a second (I don't give a single feck over it), Kante is annoyingly good. So many times in that first half he intercepted or won the ball and got things moving again. Just unbelievably good in his position and his trophy record speaks for itself. Genuinely jealous that Chelsea have him.

On replay I can see he pushes the ball with his hand after blocking it.. I guess penalty call is fair and red is also now looks not that bad

James moved the arm to push the ball, that's why he was sent off for denying clear goal scoring opportunity.

Rewatch it you’ll see he moved it forward, and the ball was going in otherwise. Just watch how far his hand moves. The ref didn’t even need to look at it in fairness. The VAR team told him, he just wanted confirmation.
I am watching this, Taylor looked at a still picture off the full scene. It clearly hit his thigh first before hitting the arm.

What the hell can he do about a ball bouncing off his knee onto his arm in a split second?

Not move his arm. Lots of times it just bounces onto an arm that’s held close to the body. He moved it to swat it away.

Why didn't Taylor actually look at the replay? Man looked at a still image and gave the penalty and a red. I get the VAR room have instructed him but surely he should be making be giving his input too. Just weak refereeing.

In real time I thought it was a pen but not a red card. From the side angle, though, you can see he makes a scooping motion forwards pushing the ball out. Taylor couldn't see that from the single freeze frame he seems to have looked at, but ultimately I reckon we got the correct call.

So mendy gets a yellow for kicking the ball , salah does the same earlier in the half and gets nothing.
Salah getting penalised for a foul then telling the linesman to feck off, booting the ball away and giving the referee some mouth afterwards is about as picture perfect an example of dissent you could possibly ask for.

Funny thing about that is if James doesn't make that movement the ball wouldn't have gone in anyway.

Still not 100% sure if he's doing that to move the ball or just as way to balance himself... But its probably the former?

Chelsea should have just let it go in and kept the man on the pitch.

Liverpool with their 2 man advantage will be too much in 2nd half.

No, he brought his arm towards his body as he was kneeing it. The alternative is moving your arm outside, which you don't do because then it'll be penalty if it hits your arm. What else was he supposed to do with his arm? It was a penalty but he was instinctively trying to bring his arm closer to his body.

I can't look at that and say the motion of his arm is only linked to his knee coming up. He's just panicked and is flicking his knee up, leaning into it, anything he can do. I would personally say it's clearly an unnatural movement.

It’s a weird one because the ball comes off his knee then arm which isn’t a penalty but then he adds a little scoop on to it afterwards but was the ball going in then? I don’t think so, bad call ref on the red card..

Connects with his leg, arm and then he swipes the ball. Without the swipe, nothing would be given. By the letter of the law he has to send him off.

I just question why the ref seemed to look at a still picture rather than a full replay.

Huh, the ball was totally going in if he hadn't used his arm.
