Premier League Gameweek 1

Been impressed with Burnley, decent football. Another team that's likely to beat us away from home

I’d argue the popularization of systemic pressing high up the pitch and tactical fouls have done more damage to football than anything else in the past 20 years.

It turned everything into a game of midfield battles and spacing, because any team that tries to counter just gets hacked down often. Go and watch a United game from the early 2000’s and it’ll look like a different sport with how much space is open on the pitch.
It's just so grim. I think you have to make a huge deal of the fouls, when they pull you down, just hold your face etc.

"Surely be an opening victory now"? It's been that since the 4th minute. Dull as dishwater opening for the season.

Piss easy opening fixture tbf. If anything they’re under delivering in this fixture.

There was a point when Poch was at Spurs (because they were just as bad as this City team) that they started talking about really trying to stomp this out but they just don't have the balls to give a yellow for every cynical challenge. I don't really know what the solution is to be honest - someone was saying Arteta has coached Arsenal to go down injured just after they've scored as it's statistically the most dangerous time in a game that you might concede, it's this kind of "gamesmanship" that makes football worse, even more than VAR and shit reffing in my opinion.
It's grim.

They look significantly more threatening on set pieces already, against a tall side too.

City will walk the league again almost makes you wonder what's the point.

Not that it wasn't glaringly obvious, we're all playing for 2nd place.

What was that about?
Haaland was upset because Bernardo didn’t play him a through ball right before the first half ended, and kinda scolded Bernardo. Pep decided to berate Haaland for it

This is only true in a framework where counter-attacking is the gold standard of what makes football undamaged.

Because once you step out of that framework, you realize that yes, it's harder to counter due to better and higher pressing, but teams have become better at being proactive on the ball in possession. I wouldn't say football is worse than in 2005 when the highlight of the sport was shit on a stick served at Anfield/Stamford Bridge.

And the impact of tactical fouling is overstated. Blatant shirt grabs and man tackles once the counter is on get penalized with a yellow card quickly. Legitimate fouls in transition that make it harder for teams to get out and run are just as valid as your normal every day fouls. To penalize the latter would just make it easier for the big teams, as small teams are the ones that foul most.

Long shots is the key against City, shoot on site, Ederson is average and most teams try to work past their defence. Just shoot.

If this was the case Fernandhino and Fabinho would be missing half the season.

Yes, City beating a newly promoted team that have played completely into their hands means they're walking the league.

which in turn allows Arteta a tactical timeout, and then people get surprised with the amount of added time on
As for gamesmanship, it has been encouraged and indulged for years, with authorities unwilling to grow a spine in tackling it

Wow the movement for that chance was incredible. First interesting thing all game.
