Premier League condemns ‘tragedy chanting’

It’s a joke really. Leeds fans are just vile scum! We’re just as bad for retaliating. This stuff needs to stop! Identify the culprits and ban for life. Will stop people then.

I don't understand why clubs don't ban fans who sing this kind of stuff, it's easy to identify them nowadays.

It's immature.

Saying that. I've no idea why people get so offended by it.

Do you not? That's a bit strange. Are you sure you are aware of what they are singing about? About people dying? And that relatives of these people are possibly at these games and hearing it? Would it offend you, if god forbid, they were singing about the deaths of your family who were killed in a plane crash or stabbed to death?

Do you still have no idea why people get so offended by it?

It's always been easy to identify them, you don't need technology.

The are stewards standing right there, meters away, doing feck all about it.

The clubs simply don't care that much about offensive chanting.

Of course I'm aware.
Do you get offended by every thing that's deemed offensive or do you choose to ignore the ones that has no attachment to you?

If a family, close friend or victim finds it offensive then, fair enough. For the very large majority it's faux outrage.

Our players should just have walked off yesterday after the game and not thank our fans because of the chants. It's a disgrace.

Easy. Document one set of fans chating those? 3 games without a crowd

Touch the wallet of the clubs, the chants will go away like magic

Dont know whats your point, especially about faux public outrage. It happens in every aspects of life so nothing to sweat about? And if you do, you're hypocritical.
Unless I've been personally affected then, I brush it off as nothing more than than idiots being idiots.

The majority of fans do. To be so offended by another person saying horrible things about people you didn't know simply because they played for Manchester United is laughable. Do you think the fans that sing it actually mean it? It's rival fans being cu*ts.
Further. Do you think they'd go up to a victim and be as malicious to their face? Of course they wouldn't

Be honest. How many fans do you think are truly offended by the scum Leeds fans trying to get a rise out of United fans?

Yeah maybe you should just keep quiet

Oh well then, by all means carry on with your chants then fans, because Zippycup hasn't been personally affected.

It's fine guys, no issue here

Whats up with racist chants for example?

Is it fans being idiots too and the fact you dont get offended by it?

Yeah maybe you should just keep quiet

What are you talking about?
I'm not saying we should keep quiet nor am I saying that it should continue. I'm simply saying the faux outrage by a few fans is laughable. You can condemn something without being offended by it.

You're even getting offended by somebody having a different opinion on the subject.

The hypocrisy on this site and on social media backs up my claim that the very large majority is faux outrage. Being offended is a choice.

If you're so offended. Do something about it.

So punish everybody for a tiny minority?

Yes. The same folks next to those idiots will quickly shush them before the whole team gets punished. Also if it was a tiny minority, you wouldn't hear them on tv would you?

Why bring race into it?
Bloody hell. Will there ever be a debate again when somebody doesn't bring race into it?

No. Mocking a tragedy to get a rise from rival fans and chanting about racism are not the same things.

Give over.

Its not brining up the race. Its the question about your stance on racist chants.

Who’s making the decision on what is deemed offensive and where is the line?

I condemn racist chants. I'm not offended by them.
What's that got to do with the subject?
Just wanted to know if you have the same light opinion on the matter as on a matter of making fun of someone dying.

Tbf if you hear chants about “murderers” next season, they’re probably being aimed at the owners box.

I'm not offended by anything you've said, but it does speak volumes that you assume I am simply because I don't agree with you. That kind of kneejerk assumption these days is so irritating.

Being offended isn't a choice. Another strange take.

Yeah we're done. Have a good day. I don't want to waste any more of your time.

What measures do you propose to deter possible racist abuse?

Thanks for your contribution to the discussion.

Racism is a crime, defined as such under common law.

Singing songs about planes crashing and people getting stabbed is horrible...but not illegal. So jail time, community service and fines are not anything like enforceable.

Bannings are possible of course.

The atmosphere at United Leeds games, especially Elland Road is toxic.

Who’s making the decision on what is deemed offensive and where is the line?

It can't be that hard to make a small list of songs or subjects

- racists chants
- celebration of tragedies where human lives were lost

The premier league and most people in this forum didnt have any issue saying what was sung yesterday simply wasnt right

Of course you're offended.
It's why you tried to get a rise out of me by being childish in your previous response.

Bloody hell. Of course being offended is a choice. You either choice to be offended or you don't

So the entirety of Old Trafford would have been kicked out at one stage with the Park Ji Sung song. Or the Lukaku song. What about songs in regards to hating somebody because of where they're from or the team they support.
What about chants in regards to threats of violence, or even threats to kill. Again. Every single Manchester United fan kicked from the ground.

Okay.

About the Park Ji Sung or the Lulaku songs, yeah, probably it was deserved. Even both players had complained about their own songs

I don't see anyone here complaining about violence threats in the songs, but they are complaining about two songs sang yesterday. I'm not the one to decide where to draw the line, but i think if you decide to draw a line about inapropiate songs, you have to take measures to effectively ban those songs. I think racist chants are a good start, and i tend to believe you don't agree with us about banning racism. Oh well, I'm not even UK based so I'm out of this thread

they’ll never stop me chanting about hamlet.

At the end of the day dude you chose to come on to a Manchester United forum of people of all ages and experiences with the club, and state that you think that an uproar about Munich chants is ridiculous and isn't a big deal.

Yet you seem surprised by writing "bloody hell!" when people are obviously and inevitably finding issue with what you're saying. What did you seriously expect to happen?

Read this post back and consider whether you've made a good choice here or not.

Your post was ridiculous so I laughed at it.

There is nothing illegal about singing vile songs or pretending to be an aeroplane. It's not very nice obviously but it's not a crime, so referring to it as "possible racist abuse" or comparing it to that is nothing short of ridiculous. And suggesting people receive are made to do "community service" or receive "some jail time" for something that isn't a crime is laughable.

Equally Leeds aren't going to dish out lifetime bans to everyone seen impersonating an aeroplane because next week their crowd would be down to about 600.

Our players should just have walked off yesterday after the game and not thank our fans because of the chants. It's a disgrace.
What a ridiculous take. Our end was outstanding yesterday for the most part.

I don't understand why clubs don't ban fans who sing this kind of stuff, it's easy to identify them nowadays.
Because Leeds wouldn't have anyone left in the stadium in they banned them all. You could look to your right at any given second and see somebody aeroplaning behind the goal we attacked second half. It was constant.

Read an article in the Athletic about a man - an Everton supporter himself - who lost his brother at Hillsborough, and is still campaigning to get justice. He said this:

I want people to be educated that it’s not right to sing about disasters — about Hillsborough or Munich — all fans. Those opposition fans, including Liverpool fans, who sang about Munich were equally misguided. I’ve heard Evertonians sing songs about Hillsborough and felt ashamed.

I just want to go to the match and not hear these songs. I’d sit next to any Manchester United fan, or any fan of any club. I have no axe to grind. Our Mike didn’t do anything to harm Manchester United. We loved Bestie.

That's enough for me. I couldn't care less if many fans don't feel offended - they should.

Again..
Who draws the line? You haven't answered that question.

"He's gonna die, He's gonna die, Joel Glazer's gonna die, How we kill him I don't know, Cut him up from head to toe, All I know Glazer's gonna die"

That's pretty fecking offensive. I haven't heard one United fan condemn that song. Should all those fans be banned?

I could name you endless chants that somebody will find offensive with.

We could start by agreeing that chants mocking actual events where real people have lost their lives is beyond the pale, maybe? Me, I'd throw death threat chants (as in the above quoted) in there too.

Proper scummy stuff, especially if your club has experienced tragedy too. Just pure amoeba level thinking going on.

Of course it's not right.
But not everybody will act and behave in a way that we would like them too. You are talking about hundreds of thousands of people gathering every week and we expect them to behave like angels. Most grow out of it, some don't. That's life.

One persons pain isn't felt by everybody. Every Irish person alive could be offended by Rangers and Celtic chants. The 'whataboutery' amongst football fans is filled with incredible levels of hypocrisy.
