Premier League condemns ‘tragedy chanting’

I agree, but I can't ever see it stopping. One side starts it, then the other feels the need to hit back with their own grisly retort.

That said, why the feck were United fans chanting 'murderers' on the anti-Glazer march to Old Trafford in August? I was there, it happened, a mile from the ground, and came from our most celebrated set of fans.

We can all condemn it online, it's easy, but I cannot see anything changing with the most hardcore supporters. At the same time, I'm reluctant to criticise those fans because they're the ones who bring the atmosphere and whose support makes a difference in games.

It needs to be punished hard. Identify who's doing it and ban them from matches for life. Same applies to racism.

I guess that’s the end of the Darwin Nunez chant then

Every game I’ve been at v dippers and scum Leeds, it’s always been their fans that start the vile Munich chants. Granted we should never retaliate and respond, as it makes us just as bad, but generally it’s in response to them. I always make my opinion known when I hear any vile chants.

I find it hard to get too outraged about this. Equating it to homophobia or racism is a bit over the top, with those being very clear problems in society and definitely marginalising groups of potential young players or fans.

I’m sure it’s not great for the families of those that died but I’m also sure it’s not great for families of, let’s say, Joel Glazer when they hear that he’s going to be cut from head to toe. Who is deciding where that morality line is being drawn?

No issues with the clubs condemning it and I wouldn’t sing that stuff myself, but I don’t see how it breaks any kind of laws for fans to be banned - happy to be corrected if it does.

Don't worry, they won't to do it in the Championship next season. Scumbags.

One of my neighbours is a retired school headmaster, and a lifetime Man City fan

At the time of the Munich disaster, he was a teacher in Manchester.

A couple of years ago he described the sombre atmosphere around the area in the ensuing days, affecting not only Man Utd fans, but rival fans, and people with little or no interest in football

He must be close to 90 years old

The idiots causing commotion at matches are too young to know any of this, and it sounds like too many of them have no respect for it either

As long as football fans are allowed in stadiums this nonsense will carry on. It’s pathetic.

Agreed. It's obviously classless and massively distasteful, but totally agree that equating it to hate speech is well OTT.

If the Munich disaster happened tomorrow there'd be songs about it next week, different times.

I think we're past the worst days of this kind of thing, personally, as society catches on to it faster. These chants are not new by any stretch, was there as much attention on them and did clubs get fined/people get caught in the past?

There's still work to be done but I do feel we are heading in the right direction in stamping it out - slowly but surely.

Make strong examples of those who are caught.

- Lifetime bans from all games
- Community service
- Hefty fines
- Some jail time

All of the above will do.

Same sort of cnuts who sing about Hillsborough, Bradford, Heysel or Ibrox. If I heard one of our own singing about other fans' tragedies, I'd be the first to lob a bottle of piss at them.

Can we also ban the wanker screaming random bursts of obscenities in the background?

It's immature.

Saying that. I've no idea why people get so offended by it.

What the feck. Jail time. Hefty Fines. Community service.
I'm not sure if you're being serious here.

Clearly there is some education required on all three tragedies for each set of fans

Unfortunately the fans sing murderers or the 'without killing anyone' chant at every home game so how many bottles of piss have you got?

It's disrespecting and mocking people who were tragically killed. It's quite easy to understand how that could cause offence to some
It happens all the time in every walk of life.
Its a minority of fans being childish idiots thats met with hypocritical faux outrage.

FA: Man United supporters sing disgusting chant, fail to stop Leeds fans from doing the same

I definitely made out Munich chants in the game. I did not hear any Turkey related chants about Leeds although Sky probably faded the mics out once they heard the Munich chants.

I don’t condone either side and we shouldn’t have stooped to their level if they indeed started it. I expect nothing less from Leeds fans though. These are the fans who went to White Hart Lane and did hissing noises 20 years ago.

Pretty sure that hundreds/thousands of people joyfully singing in front of a worldwide audience about people dying doesn't happen all the time in every walk of life.

Good. Now condemn City as well since they are also a tragedy to football. Centuries of hardwork wiped out in less than a decade.

Why don't we just not give these idiots any kind of publicity?

Just like racist chants, let them be miserable and hateful scum. Mentioning it in forums and papers etc won't ever stop weirdos.

feck them. Thier kids are fecked too. A condemning article or taking a knee will not or ever stop a hateful asshat who grew up with similar ass hats from spewing vile hate.

Football in this country has always been extremely tribalistic. I'm just surprised there aren't more incidences of violence at games.

I remember years ago watching United play Leeds at OT in the early 2000s Leeds fans chanted “Munich” pretty all game and United fans responded with

“Who’s that lying on the pavement, who’s that lying on the floor? It’s Leeds United shite, who don’t know how to fight and you won’t be singing Munich anymore”

I never made the connection between the stabbings and that chant.

No.
But abuse is thrown at people all the time.
Based on our personal opinions and views, we choose ehich ones are offensive and which ones aren't.

For example. There are plenty of United fans who are rangers and celtic fans and both happily sing bigoted songs about terrorists who killed thousands.

Dont know whats your point, especially about faux public outrage. It happens in every aspects of life so nothing to sweat about? And if you do, you're hypocritical.

What measures do you propose to deter possible racist abuse?

Thanks for your contribution to the discussion.

Apologies, as I may have misread it, but what is racist about Munich and Istanbul songs?

I'm happy enough to admit I would have sung it in my early 20s and not given it a second thought, but now I am 40 I know its wrong and stupid to sing such songs. I didn't need jail time to teach me not to chant Istanbul whilst playing Leeds. Same as Murderers, I sung it all the time I my youth. I don't get offended by any of it either when at games, it's just childish nonsense.

It's not a great look for football fans, but there are far more things to get upset about.
