It's just the standard bounce a team gets when an underperforming manager is sacked. There wasn't a great deal of difference in the way we approached the game, it's the type of result we got many times under Ole last season.
I honestly cannot understand you, it was a vastly different approach. The way we played in midfield with 3 players, the way we moved the ball forward, the work rate from the forwards, the decision making are all different.

Good result but the problems still remain. Got better when Bruno came in but still the players have no idea to progress the ball forward.

With this level never going to defeat Chelsea, even Arsenal is not going to be easy.

For some reason Villareal were really really poor. Where did the intensity from Old Trafford go? they were actually good except finishing at that game.
Exactly. Most of our possession was in our own half. We played like underdogs. Soaking up pressure and got a very lucky break. Just glad we got something so it gives a new manager a huge chance next year at pushing on. We desperately need a new right back.

I think he doesn't know what the word Literally actually means. How can it be literally the same setup when the head coach, you know the one who makes all the final decisions, is gone.

No he's right. The coaching setup is the same. Ole was a manager, not a coach.

Good game by Sancho and really important for him to get a first goal.
Martial needs to rebuild his career in a new club somewhere on the continent, I have lost faith in him ever regaining his form at United.
Telles defensively is a liability and hopefully Shaws blip in form is soon over.
McTominay is a good squad player but he should be nowhere near the starting line up.
Hopefully we can survive the Chelsea game and build some momentum.

All very simple. More solid structure, more defensive, better attacking players on for last 25 when others are tiring, and playing players in their most natural positions. Low and behold, hey presto. Great win, looking forward to the last 16 now.

Yep, full backs were a bit more reserved too and the actual wingers provided the width for once.

I love Greenwood and I think he'll go on to be a top player for us as a CF but when he plays on the right all he wants to do is cut inside and shoot and it's been left for Wan-Bissaka to constantly provide the attacking force down the right, Sancho showed why he should have been given starts on the right along time ago.

It was nice to see a right winger actually try to go down the outside for once.

I really hope Wan-Bissaka and Sancho can get a run of games together and see what they could do together.

Wan-Bissaka has literally no defensive cover for about 3 seasons with Greenwood, Pogba or whoever else Ole shoehorned in over there and thought Sancho did a great defensively infront of him.

Gutted for some reason I thought it was a late kick off. Turned it on as they were walking off the pitch. Was it a decent game?

Ronaldo, Sancho, Fred, DDG, Lindelof, Bruno, Rash - clean sheet.

Give it to Carrickseh*

*no please dont but good result

It was dull, but it was "professional" - a clean sheet and a win.

You could see players, especially Ronaldo, pointing as to where people should be - so they were trying to do some form of tactic / plan when we didn't have the ball even if it looked like 9 year olds in a school game.

Subs worked so can't criticize him there.

Only criticism I would offer was playing Martial who has to be the absolute laziest player I think I have ever seen. Jessie to start instead of Martial.

We even looked ever so slightly more confident in the last 10 minutes.

Needed a great save from de Gea to stop us going behind and quite possibly crumbling - but those things turn games.

Last 16. Job done.

Good result but mostly a bad performance by us until the first goal. De Gea saved us.

Last season we built our team on defending compactly and countering. Tonight was the first time we tried to do that in this shape. We still needed DeGea to bail us out a bit but, by and large, we looked defensively resolute. Players looked like they knew their roles and jobs. Really, really strange that the same coaching staff (minus one guy) can deliver such a different performance in the space of days.

The last 30 minutes were really really good.

Before that, same old. If De Gea hadn't pulled off that wonder save we'd be cursing the performance, so I don't want to be results-oriented and pretend we played well in that first hour. We couldn't keep the ball for 2 seconds, we were more defensively disciplined than usual but villareal still had openings, it was hardly a defensive masterclass.

After the subs we played them off the park. Strange how the flow of a game can change that drastically

It was your typical Ole United performance. Lucky not to get behind, DDG had to make couple of top notch saves, a mistake and we broke the deadlock. We had one chance previous to that, and Villarreal were in control.

Professional display in a tricky away game. We were disciplined and solid for the most past albeit not dangerous. Villareal had most of the ball in the 1st half but weren't exactly dangerous except for 2 DDG saves. We certainly looked better defensively than most if not the whole season.
When Bruno came on we completely transformed and went on top of the game and rewarded ourselves with 2 goals. The problem Ronald and Sancho finally. So chuffed for him.
Great result, progression in the CL and a nice start for Carrick.

Call it full, or whatever you want, it's still the first tme United's evewon playing in their stadium. And I remember, I hope I'm not wrong here, United playing against them more than 16 years ago with a better team and still leaving with 0 goals, 1 point and a Rooney send off for clapping sarcastically at the ref.

Anyone saying we were shit till Bruno came on totally missed the bigger picture. We've leaked so many goals recently that first half clean sheet was massive, you could tell how nervous the team was, we needed to keep it compact and not do anything stupid (which we didn't totally cut out but was better). If we had gone behind we could have crumbled, staying in the game till the hour then making changes as they tired was the right thing to do.

As sh*t as this season has been, qualifying from this group with a game to spare after the disaster that was Young Boys away is a great outcome. Our performances haven’t really merited it but credit to the team for getting over the line in these games.

The performance tonight was not pretty for the first hour and have seen some reactionary posts on social media that I don’t necessarily agree with. I think had we conceded from one of the many chances we gave them at 0-0 then this would have been another depressing night for us. Naturally we grew in confidence the longer it stayed goalless and with the quality we have going forwards we always have a chance to open teams up when they’re chasing a game.

It’s a shame we have not been more solid defensively this season more often as I always fancy us to score in a tight game.

Get in there.

Fantastic result especially considering its Villareal. Hopefully we never have to deal with them again.

Delighted for Sancho, hopefully that will do him a world of good.

Oh and Viva Ronaldo.

I remember when Tuchel started last season for Chelsea, a few 1 nils and goalless draws
We need a top coach to sort out our shape and defence as a team
We also need to get them to work harder as a team and cut out silly mistakes-it’s not rocket science
This group of players are not bad players and we came 2nd last season so they can’t have turned so bad overnight
If we get a proper tactical coach in -we might just go and win the champions league like Chelsea did last season

Fantastic European performance. DDG kept us in the game but our class told in the end. Delighted for Sancho and hope we can push on.

I did not see the game, but had a feeling we would get a result, and I'm pleased for all.. fans, players, Manager, Board... I hear it wasn't pretty but I suppose, we have to be a little humble and recognise where we are.

We need a lot of work.

This tweet wouldn't exist had De Gea not made those crucial stops. I didn't see much difference between how we setup under Ole and the way we did tonight. Slight difference was we didn't self destruct, and Villarreal wasn't a high quality team.

Individual quality plus a sense of urgency could get better teams over the hump in one-off ties like this. But over the course of a season, against opponents that are just as talented but far better coached? We saw what happened when we played Pool and City.

Takes only one result for your expectations to rise that much.

We weren’t being torn apart tonight. At this level opposition sides will always get chances by the gaps between the CBsand midfield weren’t there tonight. Our wide areas weren’t exposed by a single pass

Delighted to be through, but that was not a good game. We were embarrassingly bad for a good part of the game, perking up after some subs and then scoring a jammy goal, at which point Villareal had to do something and were also pretty tired probably. Certainly nothing to write home about, and doesn't give me a lot of confidence in a new manager being able to get a tune out of half of these idiots.
