PL W FA Premier League

Manchester United 3:0 Stoke City

Post-match discussion

Tue, 02 February 2016

Felt like a rampant session of spring cleaning where we rid ourselves of many cobwebs.

Our passing was noticeably faster and direct and our four attacking players movement off the ball was consistent and clever.

Carrick delivered a classic performance as quarterback and Fellaini added grit and guile alongside him. Rooney and Martial were irresistible on occasion and both deserved their goals.

I don't think LVG asked anything different of the players, they were simply feeling more confident, they converted thier chances and served up a performance we have waited a long time for.

One performance does not come close to alleviating the concern of our fanbase, but I'm delighted for LVG and his players that they have delivered 'the philosophy' in a game that can be used as a case study for the rest of the season.

If players can deliver against thier brief, there is enough games left for us to still make a serious impact on the league this year.

This match was almost as if a new manager had taken over.
The change was so vast, I can only think that LVG re-wrote his philosophy completely in the space of a few days and the players learnt the new philosophy withing a few hours. And it worked.

...perhaps he just scrapped it???

One good win can be destroyed by one loss, just like the Southampton result. Exciting stuff today, but any result is a must against Chelsea at the Bridge.

Maybe the players took matters into their own hands...

Today's picture. Great job on the whole. Everyone looked up for the task.

Bigger picture. 5 behind fourth but United have them all on their schedule. 14 to play, and after a dismal winter it seems easily attainable.

Vintage United, for most of it anyway.

Anything to keep threads about pep off of here is good for me

Cheers:
  • Double digit goal difference-whoa
  • 2 first half goals-wow
  • Anthony Martial-wicked
Jeers:
  • The prawns I ordered weren't peeled
  • Not much help from the top other than Arsenal, but we all know how they love fourth
  • Fellaini wasn't terrible; the crowd will require another goat to slaughter. Smalling...?

I know you're joking, but Smalling was quietly superb tonight, especially against Crouch.

That's the way a United side should be disposing of opposition like Stoke at Old Trafford.

I can't believe they gave us so much space. Afellay and Whelan didn't get anywhere near our midfield.

Carrick is going to be very difficult to replace.
We are in the same situation as last season, when he plays we play well. I thought we had bought cover, not so sure. Morgan has been very patchy and BFS seems to be missing most of the time.

So has LVG scrapped his boring passing game and allowed us to play with more freedom in the final third?

LVG said:
"It was a great first half, we scored fantastic goals and we created more chances above that. In the second we controlled the game, scored the third goal. It was very good.

"I think in 2016 we have only lost against Southampton in the last minute. We have more confidence maybe. I cannot say we now have more confidence because we lost to Southampton at home and that can never be. At home you have to win but I hope it gives us motivation to continue because in Derby we played very well also. Three goals eh? In a row!"
Christ, I think he's going insane .

Please don't spoil this thread with any van Gaal butt-kissing! United were good value for the win today. A good performance all round. Darmian played well which surprised me. We were better without that waste of space Schneiderlin too. Just hope we can keep this up. Will soon find out if this momentum's real when we face the Chavs next! Martial's going to be real quality...developing nicely just in time for when Real's transfer embargo is lifted ! :smirk:
Don't spoil this thread with negativity. Fair play to LVG.

well that was an enjoyable watch tonight. Please let that finally be the springboard and way forward for the remainder of the season. Even Fellaini played pretty well! It felt like a really balanced team tonight and the passing seemed fluid and intuitive. I'm going to keep my fingers firmly crossed for the rest of the week for that kind of display against Chelsea. Thumbs up for a change!

Only 2 games I've missed all season and I've ended up missing 6 bastard goals :(

Better but Stoke are a terrible side. We need a win against Chelsea because despite the win we've gained nothing on top 4 tonight. Great to have Carrick back.
I don't think you've been following the league very closely this season. Stoke have been a evelation under Mark Hughes. Thank God their new 35m January signing didn't play today.

They were a bit off maybe or maybe LvG out-thought Hughes, but Stoke have been really good to watch this season.

Personally, I think they've been a revelation sorry couldn't resist it!

Cant complain about that. Mata was very good, seemed to be in a free role. Martial was brilliant. LVG looked happy also, so maybe this is the type of football he want to see.

I've seen plenty of them recently. They got a lot of hype because they beat us and City in December but have also had some very poor results as well. Shawcross makes a massive difference to them.
