Manchester United 3:0 Stoke City

Post-match discussion

  1. Martial was fantistic
  2. Carrick was running the show
  3. It was good to see goals
  4. We need to build on this result

Great first half, second half we got the third goal and then basically just played it calmly since the game was done. That's how our home games should be and that's how they were under fergie a lot of the time. Focus on scoring goals and making chances in the first half, get a couple of goals up, and then play it safe and keep the ball.

Martial and Rooney were both brilliant, went for Rooney for motm but there's nothing between them. Mata was very good, should've scored a couple though. A lot more like it from him though. Lingard and Fellaini did well as well, though they're 2 positions we need to improve upon in the summer to get more consistency and quality from those areas. Carrick made a huge difference, actually passing it forward quickly. We missed that all season.

Lastly the defence looked good as we actually defended as a unit when necessary. CBJ and Darmian both with their best games for us probably. Reliable going forward and not a foot wrong defensively.

47% vs 53%.
But 3-0 win.
Hope LVG sees that we were in much more control this games than other with 65% possesion.

The one game where we don't dominate possession (47%), we hammer Stoke.

The only other game where we had less possession this season was at Newcastle, where we again scored three goals. Admittedly, that one ended 3-3 but we only had ourselves to blame for a few lapses defensively (which don't normally happen).

Crikey, how unrecognisable what that?!?

Very good performances all round and what I'm most pleased with is how much higher the players kept the work rate throughout.

Stoke didn't turn up but it feels good to see our players are capable of that performance, even if they don't show it often. A different proposition on Sunday but hopefully that'll give the players a real boost.

Very nice, thank you. Fine goals and some very good individual performances.

Possession:

United 43%
Stoke 57%

Hmmm.

Thoroughly enjoyable game
Totally secure and attacking well
Some fantastic team goals
Martial MOM
Carrick brings serenity
Everyone played well who started, Fellaini had a good game, no unnecessary fouls and closing down well as did the whole team in the first half
Best game since Everton away
Hope we continue in this vein, was like watching the old United

Are people now going to complain that we didn't have 60% of the possession? Because I'd rather have the performance we had today than have more than 60% of the ball and do feck all with it.

One of the better performances this season. Did anybody had a stinker? I didn't notice.

There must have been some kind of change in the tactics because we didn't look like the United we've grown to used to see. Anyway, it paid dividends. Hopefully LVG sees that also.

I'm fighting hard to not get my hopes up for the next fixture. It has happened before that we have a decent game and then have a total feck up. Hopefully, it'll not be the case this time.

We're not back or anything like that, but this was a very surprisingly good performance and a great win for us.

happy days!

We countered them very very well. A bit refreshing to see this performance after all the past months of absolutely boring dull football.

Better but Stoke are a terrible side. We need a win against Chelsea because despite the win we've gained nothing on top 4 tonight. Great to have Carrick back.

Can't really fault a player out there tonight, to be honest. Fast, fluid, instinctive football. Martial was given the freedom of the pitch and boy did he deliver. Carrick was excellent, as was Blind. Mata was dominant and dictated the play in the final third. This is how we should be playing every game.

The only negative is Lingard's celebration. Really needs to cut that shit out.

That was a good performance and a enjoyable game to watch. Martial is always exciting to watch and Rooney seems back to his best. Hopefully we will hit some form when it really matters now, how may times have we said that though :/

Best performance this season?

I think carrick might still be our best midfielder

That was good clean fun. Brilliant goals.

Rooney's been really quite good (and at least prolific) in the new year, to be fair.

Better but Stoke are a terrible side. We need a win against Chelsea because despite the win we've gained nothing on top 4 tonight. Great to have Carrick back.

We've gained two points on third place.

Possession is not the problem. I wonder when people will finally get this.
It becomes a problem when players pass only sideways because they are scared of losing it. You cannot make good chances without risking losing the ball, and if the priority is to keep the ball (which clearly has been for most of the time under LVG) then you won't create many good chances. LVG always moaned for not scoring in matches when we had a chance or two, but that is normal. Create more chances and you'll likely score.

Good performance, I predicted 4-1 but happy with 3-0.

Also, the Samaritons are getting a night off by the looks of it.

Excellent.

Still not convinced by multiple things but so long as we are winning, little complaint

Superb. Like Everton 3-0 game. So good going forward at the right times but rode some luck defensively thanks to tactics and style impacting the opposition into such a poor state of form.

Martial MOTM.
Rooney was good also.

If only Memphis, Perreira and Herrera were brought on earlier.

They weren't needed earlier. Unless you want to rest players.

A fantastic attacking performance, we played on the front foot. We should have had more goals if Mata was a bit more clinical. Martial is different class, now, that's a player that MUST play.

First time I have seen us play really well. Let's hope it's not another false dawn.

Martial was obviously motm, he took the absolute piss out of them all night. But Blind and CBJ were absolutely terrific as well. Any one of the others probably could've taken motm on most other days this season as well!

This match was almost as if a new manager had taken over.
The change was so vast, I can only think that LVG re-wrote his philosophy completely in the space of a few days and the players learnt the new philosophy withing a few hours. And it worked.

Not thoroughly convincing defensively, they got into dangerous positions too often. Otherwise brilliant though, going forward they looked like some huge weight had been lifted from their shoulders. Great to see Carrick and Fellaini pressing the ball high up the pitch as well!

Please don't spoil this thread with any van Gaal butt-kissing! United were good value for the win today. A good performance all round. Darmian played well which surprised me. We were better without that waste of space Schneiderlin too. Just hope we can keep this up. Will soon find out if this momentum's real when we face the Chavs next! Martial's going to be real quality...developing nicely just in time for when Real's transfer embargo is lifted ! :smirk:

Last year we had 3 good games, was it?
MCFC, LFC and Spurs. Then we came to Chelsea and began our boring football.
Could this be the first of a 3 game, good run?
