CL L Champions League Round of 16 2nd Leg

Manchester United 1:2 Sevilla

Post-match discussion

Tue, 13 March 2018

We still beat Liverpool on the Saturday, I'll take a shitty loss to Seville than from those scousers.
Why does it have to be one or the other though?

As far as I heard, they haven't gone past the 1/8-finals in quite some time, can't quote in how many years actually, so I would classify it as a big achievement, if I were their supporter.
I doubt their supporters are acting any differently than we would be if we got past them. 'Nice win who's next'. They haven't slayed a giant they've just beat a good team (on their level) and now they'll be thinking about who's next....

Ridiculous is a kind word for those tactics brother. The sooner Fellaini and Mourinho feck out of this club, the better. If PSG do us the big favor I will be thrilled. Let his take this shite of a stick football and try to get the likes of Neymar and Mbappe play like us.

I would throw everything at Levy for Pochetino right now. The guy isn't a winner now, but with our finances and his ability to improve players and style of play I am sure we will see a much different United very soon. We have the players but not the coaching staff.

A Gooner friend of mine warned me when I said Mourinho is perhaps the right man to take us forward. He said that in the very short term you may be able to swallow how his teams perform, but the moment results start going south there will be no pillar behind which Mourinho will be able to hide. At least with Klopp you know his team plays attacking football. With us it's cowardice at its peak.

Honestly for the first time I'm wavering on Jose, his tactics in every big game we play is just wearing on me.

I've supported Jose firmly thought his tenure but this is not the way a Manchester United team plays and he needs to realize that if we are to move forward

Yeah me too. I think the players are just not turning up but like you, my opinion on Mourinho is changing. That's why I want to see what he's going to do next season before going full LvG mode!

We wouldn't have gone past the next round anyway, which is probably why I'm not as upset as I should be.

On the plus side we'll avoid a quarterfinal two legged bus parking hiding. We're a laughing stock now, but imagine being humiliated twice by City, Liverpool, Real or Bayern whilst playing like complete cowards.

What the hell

C'mon guys.... no reason for panicking after going out from Champions League against Sevilla

They're one of the best teams in LaLiga and would definitely be a contester for a top 4 spot in Premier League.

It's not like the club were eliminated against fecking APOEL.

Made me laugh at least

If only Mourinho had Silva, De Bruyne, Aguero and Sane.... he could make them too play football like an uninspired tumescent ensemble of averages.

We were playing freaking Sevilla. You don't need a master plan to beat them. Go out there and do your job and 9 times out of 10 teams with the quality we have will beat them comfortably.

They really aren't very good.

Yeah, I said in the Jose thread as long as we’re winning I won’t complain.

Sometimes, though, you just need to go out and play football and you’ll beat a team easily.

I thought we were literally messing about, waiting for some kind of signal from the dugout. 70 minute mark came, and Pogba came on. There was no urgency, no desire to push the feck forwards, not until the 81st minute. Then we need 3 goals.

Some of (wait) all of those players need a rocket up their asses.

SERIOUS QUESTION:

Can someone tell me what our plan was before it was 0-1? Was it to hoof the ball up to Fellaini?

That might have been taken out of context, but feck off Mourinho.

Jose talked absolute shit in the interview, must think we're all a bunch of mugs if he honestly thought that was any sort of explanation.

I agree. We should have attacked them. I don't like Mourinho's tactics either. I wish we were playing brilliant attacking football, and winning games, too.

But you can't have your cake and eat it, too. Not with Mourinho. His pragmatism is the reason why we are back in the knockouts of the UCL, sitting 2nd in the league, and won two cups last season. It's never pretty, but it's effective. That's how he rolls.

Do we need to move on to a better attacking manager some time? Yes. But as of now, for the first time post Fergie, I feel we have some stability in results. This is our best European run, our best league position, and our strongest squad since Fergie. I'd rather we didn't gamble it away so quickly.

I think he means going out in the 2nd round of the CL isn't new to us

I tried to say that this was all very dangerous after the first game. Not just the result, but with how much Sevilla outplayed us and dominated our midfield. Sevilla had all their own way but just couldnt convert their chances on the night. Some people made out that Sevilla didn’t have many clear chances but in the champions league you should expect that your opponents will score most of their good chances and convert a few of their half chances too. Sevilla didn’t manage that in the first game but they did offer us a taste of what was to come.

Banega had the time of his life and dominated us, but because Sevilla didn't get on the scoresheet some people wanted to bury their heads in the sand and pretend our players stifled and restricted him.

Well this time it wasn't all Banega in midfield, NZonzi, Sarabia, Correa and Vasquez were all more prominent this time along with him and of course Ben Yedder took his chances. The first goal is the classic example of the champions league in my opinion. In an ordinary match in the Premier League against one of the non-top teams the striker probably doesn’t have as good a touch and finish as Ben Yedder managed. Maybe Bailly blocks the shot, maybe De Gea can get to it. But in the champions league that’s the kind of finish you should be expecting if you let your opponents get shots on goal.

The myth that because we have Mourinho as manager and a good defensive record, it must be because we're well set up defensively and thats why we arent so good going forward has to be shattered now. We aren't good going forward thats true, but its not because the team is setup well to contain and defend.

Its because we have a great goalkeeper and a good CB in Smalling and they've bailed us out more times than is reasonable to expect and covered some of the weaknesses of other players around them.

Yes we're still trying to figure out how to attack as a team who can always be dangerous. But we've also got a lot of work to do to improve how we are without the ball. But our fans on here often want to start with the players who are doing the better jobs defensively and with work ethic and looking to replace them with players who are more fancy.

Ander was great for us last season at closing down and pinching the ball in the opponent's half leading to attacks. And people wanted to replace him with a more fancy name.

Smalling is our most solid CB and has had a good season with only a couple of mistakes in the goals we've conceded. And people want to replace him with someone who can pass the ball better but can't do what he does defensively.

For some reason our modern fans tend to want to remove the industry from the team that makes it harder for opponents to play against us because those players cant pass like Barcelona’s players. If we do we’re moving further and further towards being exploited and defeated just like this. If we do, we’re not going to be Barcelona.

We’re going to be Arsenal… But with Mourinho’s preference of tall, physical players and primitive tactics it wouldn’t even be as entertaining as watching them attack well but always be so easy to score against because we’d probably continue to be a team that wants to play the ball in the air.

Sevilla aren’t a bad team, they’re no mugs. But they’re 11 points behind Valencia and firmly 5th in the La Liga table. That’s quite a number of teams who would have just as comfortably if not more-so despatched us. And that’s just from 1 league. If we include all the other leagues the list becomes very long.

So there we have it. We’re good at spending lots of money but not very good at using it to make proper progress with the team.

Sevilla sold almost 6 million euros worth of players more than they spent this season. I hope that brings some perspective to the people suggesting that we need to be spending as much as City in order to be doing better than we’re doing. We clearly aren’t making the most of what we have, or bought. That’s what a team like Sevilla are doing.

What the hell

I do hope he knew that getting United knocked out of the CL wasn't his job tonight, as opposed to on those other occasions.

I am at a loss to understand what happened. I was really looking forward to this match and our team goes and plays like that.. The sad thing for me is that even leicester city beat these lot last year. I am not going to say sack mourinho, but he needs to look himself at the mirror and ask why he didn't play the same team that started vs liverpool.

Someone said above that alexis is the chilean rooney. I laughed initially but if he doesn't kick on, he is in danger of becoming one. Pogba, I don't know man. He should fix his attitude and take a look at the likes of mctominay, who at this moment in time should start in the team ahead of him. Our passing was slow and lacked urgency. We are going 2 steps forward and 1 step backwards under mourinho.
We used to laugh at arsenal getting their asses handed to them by bayern time and time again, but imo, this is hundred times worse than that. Sir Alex at the end looked like he could not believe what he had just seen. I am not confident at all going into the Brighton game now. Better avoid internet and the papers for the next few days

I think he means going out in the 2nd round of the CL isn't new to us

What he means is "My record shows that I do fine, but United do not do fine in the Champions League. Its the club and the players, not me"

I can't even say I'm shocked by this result to be honest. I only caught the second half, and believe it or not I wanted United to win - one for the fact you're still English no matter what, but more the fact I really dislike Sevilla who ruined the only European cup final I've attended. Well, them and Agent Moreno.

After seeing Liverpool take them apart 3 times and then dropping the ball and letting them back all 3 times, this team don't know when they're beaten and at 0-0 it looked dangerous, despite how terrible they are. Gotta be the beginning of the end for Mourinho surely? He's been completely embarrassed in the league by his nemesis, aside from winning the two games he reeeeaaaallly wanted to win for his personal agenda (Chelsea and LFC) and now he's been dumped out by probably the easiest draw in this round of the CL they could have asked for.

I've watched United in Europe almost 30 years and they at least always gave it a good go, even when beaten. Tonight was baffling, those players are not that bad, not even close to being as bad as you'd think by watching them. The buck for it has to stop with the coach and his negative tactics surely cos you could throw that 11 together after them never meeting before and tell them to just go play and they'd destroy that Sevilla side. All that talent, and 4 shots in 180+ minutes of football, it doesn't bear thinking about how a coach can set his team up and get that statistic.

Ah well, he beat Liverpool though, those 3 points are all that matters to Mourinho clearly. Seriously, all banter aside I feel bad for United fans tonight, losing ain't so bad when you've give it your all, but watching the team you love whimper out pathetically due solely to a cowardly manager must sting and it's not like it's a one off, he's played like that all season.

You must all be absolutely fuming. I know I would be.

A positive

It's not worse than this

We came back from that. A memorable night at Old Trafford, with a Van Persie hat trick. Not a soul sucking borefest watching the back four pass it amongst themselves.

Why/How? The full backs would be told to stay deep and we have play makers already.
Even if they stay deep, we wouldn't concede 2 goals to teams like this. Can't blame the CBs for every goal. Also, the only decent central playmaker I see is Mata. So who are you referring to?

What's this Pogba stuff? He came on after an hour! people cannot wait to blame this guy, and I think there are other reasons for that. Pogba, to me, looks a guy who is lacking confidence, massively. No one speaks about what he is good at any more.. why is that? he is now a poor player? That's nonsense. The arrival and form of Sanchez highlights exactly what the issue is... attacking minded players, playing for a manager who does not know how to play expressive football. It's all pragmatic, defensive and frustrating. It reflects the manager... always look for a nemesis.. be it other managers, the press, even blaming the crowd recently.

He should apologise for this performance and take responsibility.

I didn't say he was a poor player. He does look low on confidence, which Jose must see in training because his mindset won't suddenly change. Why bring him on if his head isn't right? It makes no sense. He was literally shanking easy passes to feet out of play.

I don't think I'm overreacting by saying it was one of the worst OT performances I've ever seen.

I'm not even mad, or angry.

Just bitterly disappointed over the approach to that tie. And this definitely is not down to the players, definitely.

Tactics, selection and approach were all wrong. Hope this is not the start of the famous Jose Meltdown.

What is he saying?

“The first goal will always be important in this match. We try since the first minute to be aggressive and intense. We didn’t score, Sevilla progressively hid the ball from us and controlled the game well.”

“The second goal made it impossible. The players were free, we had good situations, we had good periods, I can’t say that my players had something wrong in terms of their attitude and their intention to play.”

"I've sat in this chair twice before, with Porto - Man Utd out, with Real Madrid - Man Utd out, so this is nothing new for this football club."

Thats a fecking terrible thing to hear from your manager.

Why does it have to be one or the other though?

Well, it doesn't in that respect. It's just easier to rip the shit out of Liverpool fans, since I have no friends who support Seville. But yeah, coming of a impressive performance on the weekend, to this trash. Is unforgivable.

Pretty much how I feel, it sucks going out to a side like Seville, it's even worse doing so by loosing at home but I'd rather go out tonight than at the hands of Liverpool or City and in many ways that's the real problem.... how many of us have any confidence when playing those sides? It's more of a relief if we win those games at the moment rather than doing so with any confidence

Was at the game, that was proper shit, Fellaini and Smalling awful awful awful. Pogba invisible... all we did was pass the ball around the back

He's got to be sacked. He had two attacking plans. Long ball and wait for opposition error. There manager dealt with the former and their players didn't offer the ball up. Mouriniho was happy to keep it like that, didn't think maybe we should try and force an error, he's a coward
