Manchester United 1:0 Omonia Nicosia

Post-match discussion

I honestly didn't think it was that bad. Some overreactions going on.

Don't get me wrong, beating a Cypriot team 1-0 in the dying embers of the game is not something to be pleased with. But I think if we put in a couple of goals that really should have been taken and we run out clear winners nobody would be saying anything - it would be a fairly routine performance. The difference between that happening and not is only some poor finishing and decision making in the final third.

Only watched the highlights, but how that ended 1-0  At least we created lots of chances, though we really need to learn to put them away and take them. Would have been a really nervous game if Omonia's player had squared the ball for an easy tap in.

Not a chance.

There was ridiculously giddy posts after we beat a hopeless Everton team. We have today absolutely struggled to be a team from Cyprus.

It shows how terribly average we are despite spending hundreds of millions of pounds.

The lack of speed of thought and running and forward movement and a decent striker were laid bare for all to see tonight.

Why are you talking like we have created 3-4 chances when we have actually created 34?

We should buy the keeper, Francis Uzoho. 23, United fan. He was amazing.

No we weren’t awful, we had 34 shots and multiple big chances. On another day it’s 6-0. Love the quick crisp passing.

We need more quality in the deliveries into the box.

Sancho looked good, he is very useful in tight spaces.

Replace Ronaldo with the Cavani we had about 2 years ago and it`s a different score. Ronaldo is still capable of good moments here and there, but these kind of games show how much we need a natural nr 9

All of sudden is last year, we lost a great young talent who was planned to play CF for future called M...... G........ after the Jan transfer window closed a few days
Then we need to play two aged CF in last season, and cannot find out a budget to replace CF in this summer in sudden.

During 1st half we did create half a dozen chances 50% of them should have been converted. But 2nd half was just busy busy, hardly any genuine chances created.

MG was a clinical and lethal striker. Obviously the best finisher in the squad. Makes scoring so easy. It's a shame what is happening to him

From what I saw of the 34 shots we had, Rashford managed to drag most of his efforts wide, Ronaldo was static in the box and Bruno seemed to be attempting rugby conversions.
We desperately need a young reliable striker.

Finishing was poor so let’s get that out the way.

On the bright side, we’re creating. Yes it’s against a poor side, but they defended with everyone in the box - and we’ve seen in the past where we looked clueless against a low block. It’s already signs of huge improvement for me, and I think the finishing will come

Feel sorry for their keeper but not for Lennon and the rest of the team. They came here to defend for their lives and come out with that kind of point and were disappointed it didnt go that way. Hate this, come and fight, I'm not saying play an open game but at least show something, anything in attack, some desire at least.

Ronaldo very poor tonight I thought. Still seems way off it. Love the guy but fear he is on a steep decline and is essentially our only option through the middle.
to be fair, he barely saw the ball - some of the passing was not exactly of the greatest standard. but yes he was quiet. however he didn't miss two glaring chances like rashford

Far from great. they made such hard work of it. Once again, it shows why we need a top-class, real centre forward who scares difficult (half of less) chances. Rashford is not that and Ronaldo never has been (he is so much better out wider or just behind so that he is harder to pick up by defenders).

Lots of under-par performance: Martinez, Malacia, Bruno, to name just three. We are a little more balanced than in Ole's last days but still not quite there. I mean with all that possession matched to all the chances we created, this should have been straightforward. That said, I was fairly confident we would get the goal but there's no way we get anything in Spain if we play like this (or against Newcastle on Sunday). Can't find a MoM even they we dominated. It was so odd to watch, one minute our passing was crisp and fast, the next there's no movement up front (a long-term problem) and the likes of Lindelof has to take five touches before he can find someone: this is the one of the most obvious differences between us and City

I wonder who is going to snap up their Bruno - he looks as if he could get into one of the "lesser" PL teams... and it might be worth keeping an eye on their keeper!

How many times do people have to say this before they realise its more than getting 3 points? We can dominate all we want but if we don't have a decent goal scorer then we won't be in the mix for anything which is why we won't be moving on anywhere anytime soon.
Oh I get it mate, just bored of having those conversations too.

Dunno why people are calling the keeper fantastic, he only had to make 2 good saves, the rest of the shots were directly at him.

We dominated the match. There were some absolutely freak misses. Wasn't as if we struggled at all.
This is a bizarre post.

It's like night and day with recent years - we used to struggle to create anything of note, and would be relying on individual moments to score against teams that parked the bus like this. Tonight we created enough chances to win by 5 or 6, but our forwards all left their finishing boots in the changing room.

But you're acting as if it was a freak that our finishing and ruthlessness was so poor. Weve already scored 10 less league goals than arsenal. 20 less than city. Finishing is as much a part of game as creating, and we are concerningly shit at it too often. You might only get 1 good chance in a tough PL game

It was largely thanks to Lennons tactics that it was an utterly dreary spectacle. I actually felt a bit of sympathy for their keeper in the end, 2 minutes away from condemning us to a potential play-off.

I wonder how he plays normally, because he had an absolute worldie against us. Only 23 as well.

Actually thought we played pretty well. I'm not seeing all the negativity tbh.

Should have put the game to bed earlier. It's clear we need another striker. The commentator said in the second half "ETH might want to consider brining another striker off the bench here and going two up top to give more firepower"............... completely ignoring the fact that we don't have any other strikers, apart from Ronaldo.

I think Ronaldo still has a big role to play but we obviously need another quality specialist up there.

Sancho and Antony passively staying wide doing feck all really pissed me off.

I understand keeping width is part if the tactics but feck me they were useless. Sancho changed it up last 3 minutes and we scored from it.

Big fan of both players in general, but they annoyed me yesterday.

You’re trying to claim that the issue last night was part of a long-running theme. Last night was a freak, where we created a shit load of chances but couldn’t convert. That hasn’t happened in any other game this season. And we’ve had some shocking displays against bad sides in recent years but none of them were as one-sided as last night. If we’re going to continue to create as many big chances as that against weaker teams then that’s an obvious improvement under ETH.

Where I can see a theme that goes back beyond this season is having a #9 who isn’t good enough. That’s an issue going back years and it’s hard to see us win anything so long as that continues. In fact, ETH is having to deal with crappiest options as striker since Fergie retired. In a way, it’s a miracle that results have been as good as they have.

I felt like it was last year's team, lack of ideas, too slow in the buildup and then we had poor finishing. There was also a noticable lack of movement to give players options to build the attack. Left side wasnt as bad with Rashford, Malacia, Sancho and Shaw linking up down that side. Through the middle and on the right it was very apparent though

McTom saved us with a good touch and smashing the ball, their keeper had been solid all match but finally beaten.

Yeap, we instantly improve when Martial is fit but he rarely is.

With Martial on the pitch last night we would have cut them to pieces. With Martial on the pitch for 10 minutes before he got injured we would have scored a few.

First half we played well, we just couldn't finish anything. I think our xG was 5. To barely score one with that xG is awful. City would have put 10 past them with the chances we had.

Slow buildup with a lack of ideas and no finish till McTom saved us. We were no better than last year's team

Why was the foul on Malacia not given as a penalty? They should also have received a red card. This is the second time in four European games this season that the referee has fecked us over, and I feel we as a club don't make enough of a noise about the decisions the referees give against us.

Utter nonsense.

EDIT: Also why post this straight after #266?
Nonsense indeed. In fact, in terms of augmenting the new play style, I personally thought it was one of our best performances. There's going to be several such games in the future, good learning for the team.

Think that's a bit harsh, we actually played well and created more than enough chances. The problem was poor finishing and the keeper had a great game

That’s bullshit. He did routine saves and most of them he didn’t even had to move because we were hitting straight at him.

Haaland would have scored minimally a hat trick if he was playing for us tonight.

We played relatively well last night and it was as one sided as it will get if it weren’t for our forwards being unable to convert easy chances.

How many games against cannon fodder did we win in Fergie time. You don't always get what you deserve. You roll with the punches.

That is very true.
A classic game of its, buts and maybes. But in the very end we won. Just.

That was nuts. Although it does happen a lot. Defenders get a crate blanche to absolutely wreck someone in the box, miles after the ball has gone, providing they’re trying to block a cross/shot. Pickford on Van Dijk being another great example. Obviously VAR should have put an end to that but we all know VAR is fecking useless.

Speaking of fecking useless VAR the two footer on Bruno was another blatant red, plus it’s a penalty all day long when a defender moves his body/arm towards the ball to block a cross. Even if his arm is in a “natural position”. Especially when the ball has travelled that far before it hit his arm. Ho hum. Another day, another reason to scrap VAR. Same old, same old.

He saved what you would expect a decent keeper to save. The "chances" were mostly shots with several bodies blocking the goal.

We did have a couple of headers, like Fred's in the first half where he put it wide. But most chances were half at best

Still doesnt mean we should have had those poor efforts like Bruno and iirc McTominay skying them from outside the box, before McTom saved us mins later. We should still be able to get those shots on target. Its just those arent chances you expect to score with a high percentage

I thought we looked good in general, you can see out all round game is coming on well. But our finishing was awful, Rashford and Bruno especially. Ronaldo sadly appears shot, we desperately need a new striker. Neither he nor Martial can be relied upon.
