Mata - I don't know how he won POTM but he's useless out wide. I can't remember the last time I saw him win a physical tussle.
Mata won MotM for scoring a goal. After all it was the only thing we did all match. For the rest of the game he was just as bad as everyone else.

It's nowhere near good enough. We're awful to watch and are gaining a reputation as such.

As the commentators were saying, 4th and the FA cup would be enough to ensure LVG another season as manager because he's successfully lowered expectations enough. Next year will be about consolidating top four and Van Gaal going out on his own, boring terms.

Might give it a miss I think....

3 points, poor performance.

If anyone felt he was playing for a place in the team for the final, they did little to justify it. Depay, Lingard and Rooney really shocking effort, Herrera and Rojo very poor.

Looked like they didn't believe they could win.

Dire viewing without our pacy frontline.

I know we won but that was very uninspiring for the future. I'm concerned if Martial is out for any period of time. Rashford goes straight back in.

The manager didn't help us.
Just relieved that we got the win. As soon as Martial was out I knew we would have problems and not taking Rashford at all was madness. The result will make LvG think he was justified. Memphis is terrible.

Think we did pretty well in the circumstances to get a win!

Luckily Norwich were shockingly poor.

I'm the opposite of some people who want us to lose so LVG gets sacked. I want us to win 1 0 loke the every week so he stays in a job and it pisses some of the matchday thread arseholes off

Result: This was a great result for us. Fingers crossed Arsene can do us a favour and then suddenly top 4 is somehow back in our hands. This season we've dropped so many points in matches like this, so to get 3 points here is a good improvement.
Performance: I actually don't think we were too bad. There's a lot of complaining on here which is understandable because it wasn't stellar but out of ten id rate the performance a 6/7. To win without Martial, Rashford and Blind against a team fighting for their lives and pretty much give them nothing all game is fine by me.
Players I thought did well: I thought our right hand side was brilliant all game. I've called Mata plenty of times this season but I think on the right hand side with Valencia he does really well. I'd argue Mata's best position is in that wide area providing we have an attacking right back to give him lots of space. I've gone for Mata as my man of the match but it could've easily been Valencia as he was really good. Besides those two I thought Schneiderlin did well when he came on, Carrick did well and Rooney improved as the game went on. Smalling was solid but there wasn't a lot for him to do and some of his passing was a bit poor.
Players I thought struggled: It's such a shame for Memphis. Every time he comes on he's just so poor. He can't beat his man, he can't cross, he can't even take free kicks at the minute. He looks like a player who desperately needs that summer break and a fresh start next season, he needs to step up though. I thought Jesse was poor again as well, he's never really going to be one of the better players though. I'd drop him for West Ham for sure though.
Herrera struggled but it's difficult for him to have to play the odd game and perform, hopefully he's another who can improve next season and kick on. I still have a lot of time for Herrera as I'm sure many do.
Opposition: They looked like a Championship side really, It's a shame because I don't mind Norwich but they haven't done well enough in the transfer windows to warrant staying up. Naismith was a good buy in January and it's a shame he isn't getting into the side. Redmond hasn't kicked on like he was expected to either, all in all disappointing from them and they're surely going down.
Mata staying behind at the end: It's always nice to see your players stay behind to celebrate with the fans who've travelled. A very classy touch, it's hard not to like Mata regardless of how he performs on the pitch. Hopefully he's another player who can get into some form at the right part of the season.

Exactly this on Rashford.

With a tiny handful of games left, and top 4 still on, why on earth wouldn't you at least have the security of him on the bench! It's not like we're stacked with strikers!

Gordon McQueen on MUTV said that losing Martial and Darmian seemed to mess the players up a bit, that they looked underprepared. Also that he hope LvG isn't here next season as he wouldn't want him being handed a pile of money again and that this season recruitment has been dire.

Speechless. This game summed up our season. The goal came from the gift of a lower level kind of mistake. We can't live in the expectation of similar mistakes to carry our poor quality of football. That LVG is able continue off the back of such performances is pitiful.

I had zero emotion when our goal went in, and zero tension in the last few minutes about Norwich scoring, cheers LvG you've just about totally killed my love for the game.
I was actually hoping for a Norwich result in the end to make the fight at the bottom a bit more exciting. Couldn't care less about champions league if Van Gaal is still in charge.

Offensively we were dreadful. The lack of pace was startling, slow and sluggish football.

Lingard was absolutely dreadful. Memphis was terrible, Rooney was slightly underpar but a great pass for Morgan and the assist so I'll let him off, however I think it shows that he should play in midfield.

Smalling was immense at the back, Rojo still not very good in my opinion. Valencia put in a decent performance.

Altogether though it was a poor attacking display from us and we're slightly fortunate that Bassong made a mistake, otherwise I think it would have been 0-0.

Yeah LvG needs to go in the summer whatever happens..

In relation to today I thought Rooney did very well isolated up front in the hot weather with scraps to feed on, Mata did well 2nd half when he moved more central (why put him out wide?), Hererra probably the only player to make forward runs off the ball along with Valencia but still careless at times.
i could hear the wheezing and smell the Marlboro Lights from my couch.

RedCafe`s flag is on half staff today and will stay that way until game vs West Ham

But Jose Mourinho would be far worse, just ask @Dobba

Van Gaal calls himself a humanitarian right?, he's close to perfecting a cure for insomnia the world over, what a guy.

Was this even fecking Manchester United playing today? Wtf.

We used to grind out victories but today. .

How can LVG possibly claim we are improving? Injury to a 20 y.o striker and we r back to bring shite again?

Firstly, shit performance. But what more can we expect under LVG?

I'm hoping for a miracle and hoping Arsenal can beat Citeh and we can conjure up a miracle by beating West Ham and Bournemouth. I hope Martial isn't too badly injured and Rashford can give us that bit of pace that we lacked today.

Finally, is it only me that thought Rooney showed good awareness with his assist? The consensus here seems to be that he almost fecked it up and got lucky with the Mata pass. I thought he showed a good awareness of Mata running in behind, he knew he didn't have the pace to get away so picked out Mata.

Anyway, c'mon Arsenal!
He did but people hate Rooney so have a bias.

I am glad we won, but am not doing ratings for the players, because I blame the manager and his preparations for the way they are playing. Oh and for the injuries.

1:0 looked like an absolute maximum against Norwich City... let that sink in for a second.

That set football back a couple years.

But! 3 points is 3 points. I'll take it considering what the away games have been like.

Let's see if Arse can come through now.

Take the pace out of that forward line and we are struggling. Memphis does not have pace, neither does Rooney. Lingard does, but has no end product.
Aye but there's something fundamentally wrong with few players under LvG. Memphis looks like an athlete tank but his brain doesn't function. He could easily take defenders with burst of pace but instead turns into spinelss jellyfish and stops playing like he used to enjoy in the past.

We all saw him during World Cup and he was shining even when coming on from the bench. Same with Rojo... completely different players, blocked psychologically or the tactics are so conservative they cannot play simple game of football.

Everything that is wrong with redcafe in one post.

Absolutely stupid attitude to have.

A shocking, disgraceful game of football between two absolute dogshit teams.

Big 3 points though, could be huge by this time next week.

I remember this. This is what football was like when Martial and Rashford weren't in the side. Have to agree with some about being numb to the goals nowadays in some games, raised an eyebrow out of surprise more than anything today

That's why I am not going to do player ratings. I think he has done real damage to some of these players.

Martial 4th on Motm here, good voting lads!
Januzaj must be so annoyed, after almost being sent on twice.

Such a terrible match and mediocre performance against a team all but relegated, good result though. Incredibly that's 7 wins in the last 9, somehow.

Feels strange but with that performance, it's hard to celebrate an important result. It's the story of our season. Still, time to pray that Arsenal come through.

Redcafe posts. moan moan moan

Seems some will be upset that West Ham are loosing - Do they really call themselves Manchester United supporters?

People are thrilled to bits that West Ham are losing. We still want 4th place, just don't want the manager. I was relieved that we won today. Relieved is the word, most games we have won have been a relief. It shouldn't be like that.
Swansea just scored a third as well.
