Newcastle United 1:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

If we had taken our chances we would have won easily. Sanchez and Martial had very good chances.

Lingarrd was poor and Pogba could have been better.

One mistake can have huge consequences and in this case smalling diving turned out to be huge.

Lack of intensity against these poorer teams really pisses me off. Away from home is always the same. It is always tough. If this were city, they would absolutely dominate Newcastle.

What a shambles knee jerk post.

Log off and try and get your marbles back.
Shambles? What, are you happy with what you see on the pitch? We have good players yet they look clueless together and Mourinho makes the same fecking mistakes every single fecking game. At a certain point - you have to blame him. After this long, if we look this clueless on the pitch, then what hope can we have of that changing with another few months? You can't just buy buy buy and eventually it'll click. You need to show good play before to justify that getting players will step you up another level.

My views on Lukaku have been the same for years. Never good enough for a big team. People disagree, whatever. It's my opinion.
Pogba can be class. But not the way we're using him and also he himself needs to improve a lot and get his shit together. He's pathetic in big games and whenever the going gets tough. Today unacceptable.

We are getting more and more poorer as the season goes on.

Dismal.

I'm not trying to be controversial or anything but I honestly feel we didn't deserve to lose. Newcastle took their chance and we didn't take any of ours, that was the difference.

That said, I'm starting to get a bit worried with Pogba, Smalling needs to be sold and Carrick is done at the highest level.

Martial on the right is senseless. Pogba in a 2 is depressing. Smalling and Jones against pressing sides is an accident waiting to happen.

They got the run of the green today but, all things considered, this result is hard to excuse. If we don’t win our home games against Arsenal, Chelsea and Pool we could be in a spot of bother. I’d be more surprised if Spurs don’t catch us at this rate.

Not sure we are playing to Lukaku's strengths entirely, but he could be another striker who is weighed down playing for United, it has happened before.

Pogba, we have been ripped off. I expect a world beater for that sort of money. We could have got a couple of top class midfielders for that money, or at least used it towards them. He is a little boy in a man's body and has a little boys temperament.
Yeah maybe we aren't but Lukaku isn't good enough to build around anyway. That's the issue. He's a limited striker who will forever limit our play as long as he's here.

As soon as they scored I knew we weren't coming back, this is the attack Jose says doesn't need additions

I love Manchester United but i just cannot stand watching that group of players play for the club and turnout a display can only be described as pathetic and embarrassing. They should be ashamed of themselves, half-arsed attempt at trying to win a game. Mourinho is of course part to blame for this. Absolute state of our back four. If you have any aspirations of winning the league/CL that back four just ain't going to win you squat. Smalling should never play for us again. Those two yellow cards in the derby against city and now diving against Newcastle, just f off somewhere else.
The whole of the back four play too deep making a huge gap between our forwards. Maybe it's because we dont have a functioning midfield.

It's not the quality of our players that's the problem, it's their mentality. There's no fight in this team.

Defensive errors aside - you don't win if you don't score. I don't see a point criticizing individual performances as only few performed well.

Our attacking options are very thin and teams know how to stop our forwards. There is nothing we can surprise teams from the right and they just focus on our middle/left. Mata was the only attacking option on the bench today - I hope this means we will see more bench opportunities given to youth in the upcoming matches.

We need to pickup form very quickly as we play chelsea/liverpool/sevilla around the corner (after fa cup).

Looking forward to the dozen threads about how this and that should change, we are shit, Pogba should be sold, Lukaku should play for Swansea etc.

We've played like this many times before and won. We had plenty of chances today and the ball just wouldn't go in. That is football and Newcastle away was never going to be an easy trip.
I wouldn’t mind selling Pogba...he’s a quality player in the perfect system, but he isn’t good enough that the team should go with a specific formation just for him. He simply isn’t versatile enough and narrows team selection to the point that the negatives start to catch up with the positives.

It's quite basic how to rectify this. Play three in the middle always. No exceptions.

Jonjo Shelvey was made to look like prime Gullitt today because he had acres of time and space. There is a reason why he isn't a great or even a good player is he can't play without acres of time and space.

Crowd the middle and you've destroyed Newcastle because they have such little quality out wide. Alas we have Matic versus three midfielders. Matic could play against three county level players and still get bossed. He cannot play against three opponents.

Secondly we need a ball playing CB. This isn't a modern hipster fantasy. We need someone simply who won't play a flat, slow, square pass to a team mate eight yards from him. Someone who has a football technique and education. I'm sorry but Smalling looks like a lower league player with the ball at his feet. Where did he come from? Lower leagues.

Lingard as a 10/top of the triangle in a 4231 is negative idea and a bad exeriement. Yes he has played well but he's used there to either press high alone (which doesn't work) or for the counter. We shouldn't be setting up to counter against Newcastle. We should be imposing ourselves on them and dominating the ball.

Ranting isn't going to help but makes me less mad!

Souness said he is immature and he does appear to be a big kid, who has no tactical awareness. A world class midfielder would be comfortable in a midfield two or three. That we have to protect him says a lot.

Pogba has shown no leadership qualities since he came back to the club , he is a decent player but shown no more than that bar the odd power house display when he we play weaker opposition.

But he is very inconsistent and if we are honest he has not added that much to us since he came back to us.

So far he has shown he is not a player of quality that you can build a team around.

Plan A: Have Martial score from one of his kazillion chances.

Plan B: Wut?

Lukaku put 2 players through to almost gilt edge chances and held the ball up brilliantly.

Poor, but I think a couple of people in the Matchday thread overplayed just how poor we were. We had chances and Lukaku and Sanchez were both quality in the build-up.

We were let down by poor displays from Lingard and Martial in attack while Pogba was anonymous. Jose has just said there was 'no problem' but for our sake we should hope he was keeping his cards close to his chest, because if he was fit he was woeful. Either way Jose should have been ringing the changes long before we conceded, too many players not at the races today.
Agreed. A lot of attention to how poor Pogba was today but I thought Lingard was extremely poor as well. I was surprised Mata was left out. Hopefully he starts the next game. He linked up well with Sanchez when he came on.

It's a shambles as Lukaku had a very good game today. Again he got no service but did excellently with what he got. He also 24 years old.

Totally the wrong time to try and force your opinions about him on people as it makes your view of the game look stupid in my opinion.

We can't build from the back with those two clumsy oafs at CB, our striker is unable to hold up the ball and bring in runners and, in a 4-2-3-1 system, our FBs fail to contribute to the attack. To top it all off there is a total lack of passion in the side.
Apart from the chance he made for Alexis, obviously.

With the individual talent we have in the first 11 it is incomprehensible that they play with hardly any pace or dynamism. Today was insipid, limp, inept, lame....you name it!
Pogba was so arrogant today by deciding he was fit to play after pulling up in the warm up and then strolling around like the poser he is, disgraceful. Shelvey made him look like a prize chump.
So many things wrong with this "team" and yet again, don't get me started on Lingard. He might have scored a few goals of late but as a footballer he is nowhere near what's required at the top level.
Jose needs to get the team sorted out or this season is going to fizzle out. You can sort of accept that United can lose to Huddersfield early in the season but not in this manner when the barcodes are in such desperate form themselves.
Pathetic stuff all round.

Worst performance of the season. Anyone who thinks DDG is sticking around with this lot is delusional.

Yeah was thinking about that the other day...how much longer will DDG want to be here....we aren't winning trophies...overall play is shite....how many more losses would we have if it weren't for him? Surely he must be thinking about his future.

We have some serious, serious problems with this squad. I hope to god Jose was lying when he said we're not signing an attacking player in summer. We need a better alternative than Mata, he kills our width when he comes on and is too slow.

Smalling and Jones look like they have a mistake in them every game, shouldn't be saying the same things.

Don’t think Mata was our problem today in all fairness. We had Martial on the right and width didn’t help. Mata added much more creativity when he came on. However you slice it we never looked it winning or even tying up the game after Newcastle scored.

Really embarassing even worse than Huddersfield that said we had no luck either we should of scored at least 2 that was some shocking luck to boot so bad performance plus no luck equals embarassing result very sad

Lukaku was actually decent today. Sanchez should have buried that chance.

Today is on Martial, Sanchez and Pogba. The first two for missing chances and Pogba for going missing, again.

Let's all look forward to the players posting on social media inspiring posts about how they have to continue fighting in the next game. Fecking overpaid lazy idiots.

Maybe one of them will spring a new hairstyle or dance move to cheer us all up. That kind of nonsense certainly seems to cheer some of them up anyway.

it is not suprising that us and chelsea are so far behind man city this year. both teams only have 2 world class players (de gea and sanchez, courtois and hazard) and managers that just do not seem quite there. on current form, how many of the other players would get into city’s team? in fact, there arent even many who would get imto the spurs first 11.

we have players like jones and smalling, young, lingard, etc who are basically just average premiership lvl players, nothing more, nothing less. how can we win the prem when we are esssentially just slightly above average? it just will not happen. the gap between sanchez and the others is just so large and it was never so apparent before we signed him, our only world class outfield player, because we never had a world class player to benchmark the others against week in, week out.

unfortunately, our players only seem to be interested in snapchat, instagram, dabs, dances, handshakes and all other BS that elevates their profile on social media. as someone who grew up with the class of 92 and all the passion and pride those guys had playing for us, I find it terribly disheartening watching the current squad.

I have a feeling that we might be over taken by one of Chelsea, Liverpool or Tottenham by end of the season if we keep playing like this.
Just pray not overtaken by the three. Another couple of shit games and we are fecked.

So far some of the posts i've seen contain evidence that the people would ignore the obvious to try and defend some kind of a point, for the sake of doing it. Square peg, round...

Whens Bailly back?

I’d quite like to see us give the Bailly Rojo partnership that saw us through the end of last season another go.

Won’t change much from an attacking perspective but could us build from the back a bit better.
