the scoreline flatters us. could've easily been 4, 5-1 if it wasn't for romero

As many said, not surprised but hoping we'd at least get an ugly win. This has seriously ruined my day. Keep telling myself not to care but this continues to hurt. We are such a farce.

The LVG era has been bad in a different way to Moyes, in that no matter how dire we've been I've always had the sense that the desire is there, and the players still believe in themselves and the manager.

Not anymore - that could have easily been a match from the 2nd half of the Moyes season. Shades of Olympiakos.

I stayed up late to watch this. That wasn't the football of quality teams (Sisto and Martial apart). That was play ground level football. Shambles. I feel sorry for van Gaal for the injuries, he really has rotten luck, but even with that team, he should have won this game.
What is going on with this club. I'm losing words to describe our situation everyday.

I've learned to expect nothing from this team while van gaal is still in charge.

I don't know why I still watch united games these days. I know I'll most likely be disappointed and would have made better use of time doing something else not being half bored to death, but I can't help but tune in when we're playing even though we're complete shit atm for some mysterious reason.

I ll not blame Lvg much for this, except for maybe not trying to get Pereira or Keane earlier. With so many injuries, he put out an ok team.
But the players played like headless chickens and had no zeal to achieve anything. Either they have all gone crap or are trying to get LvG sacked.

I honestly thought we were gonna get surprised and would have a hard game but it seems from your description (I didn't watch) we were truly horrid... did the players show any fight?

Second half, no. Keane would have imploded trying to motivate the participants of that pitiful performance, no leaders on the pitch what so ever & the manager sat on his arse in the dug out.
First half there were moments of good play.

Cooder: Well, there's no shame in bein' beaten by the best.
Spud: But he didn't seem all that...
Cooder{brusque}: We were beaten by the best, boy.

About to check score in the morning on my phone. Joked that we will have likely lost. Checked and just put the phone down. Poor performances and losing games we should be winning no longer surprises me.

I'm 26, have been watching Utd for as long as I can remember. Have seen virtually every game in the last 15 years, either on TV, streamed or live at OT

I remember Kosice, I remember MK Dons, Southend, Coventry and Zalagarzaeg (or whatever they are called!)

I also have had a night to sleep on this and calm down

I would still say that absolute shower of shite tonight were the worst team I can ever recall us losing to

Not only were they bad, they didn't even make life difficult for us. Wide open at the back, virtually no midfield and haven't played a competitive game in two months

I have backed LvG, probably up until we got beaten at home by Southampton, but that was unacceptable

Utd should be able to field any combination of senior players on our books and beat a rabble like that regardless of who is sitting in the dugout

Failure to do so proves to me that the players can't or won't play for van Gaal

In the words of a great man - "give it Giggseh to till the end of the season"

If the manager's job is all about putting 11 players on the pitch, I would like to nominate myself.

Do you think the only task manager has is to select a starting XI and make substitutions? This is what he is paid £5m a year to do?

Top six comedy moments:

- That phase of play where the ball rolled slowly across the middle of the pitch while players on both teams just swung their legs wildly at it like a bunch of six year olds. It went on for a good 5+ seconds and also included at least two players spinning ucontrollably round in a circle for absolutely no reason at all. Genuinely the most pathetic passage of play I've ever seen in a professional football game

- When the ball got cleared and the camera panned to the half way line and there were two of their players through on goal for no explainable reason

- When Depay somehow scored despite being busy doing some kind of crab dance, and then the referee took abot 3 seconds to award the goal due to being completely baffled by what had happened.

- When one of their players was for some reason being pressed by three United players at once, then beat all three of them by very slowly turning round and running off in a slightly different direction

- When the camera suddenly cut to a close up of Love's hideous face slowly turning to face it, like a bond villain revealing their deformity

- When Smallling went off without telling the ref so the ref thought he was a sub waiting to come on and wouldn't let him run back on the pitch

I can't believe y'all are shocked. I fully expected this.

Yeah same. I was of a mindset that no matter how bad they were, we'd just be that determined to be a little bit worse.

I am not saying he should not have added anything else. But "only" for this game, I do not put all the blame on LvG. The players he put were decent enough to beat the other team. They did not seem to be trying much.

 Nailed it!

At the time, I was getting royally pissed off at Trevor Francis' obsession with our (lack of) defending for their corner clearance (point number 2, above). However, in watching it back at half time it truly was a Sunday League level of football. I can honestly say it's the single worst moment I've ever seen from United, just slightly ahead of point number 4 above.

I mean, you have 2 defenders stood on the halfway line, comfortably marking their 2 attackers. No problem. Then, out of nowhere, the cheeky little miners launch a ball over the top!!!!! Who could have predicted that!?! I'm surprised that it's even allowed in the modern game, to be quite fecking honest.

Not even remotely comparable. Those were the days when the home-grown players rule use to feck us over... plus we actually came from behind in that game.
I'm not comparing the ins and outs,
of both matches, just that we have been here before losing to a team we should be beating, so I would say it is comparable as both were shocks in Europe.

I know your upset, but come on there is a big correlation in both matches.

But we can't look at things as "only" one game at a time anymore. The players are now entirely LVG's and their collective performances have to be his accountability.

Even the young lads, like Love, have had enough time in the reserves under LVG that he should either realise they're not ready yet or invested sufficient time in their development to get them ready. As most of them clearly aren't ready yet then he should have strengthened the side in January: a half-arsed last ditch attempt for De-fecking-buchy does not count.

Yes, the players were absolutely spineless last night. But that is LVG's responsibility - he assembled this squad of players and he has got them playing in this fashion and 'motivating' them to their current mindset. As said, of all the manager's incredibly important tasks, selecting the starting XI is probably the easiest. However, it seems that this is all LVG is doing now - going through the motions in the week and selecting a team on match day, blaming any underperformance on Murphy's Law for feck's sake!

Lack of leadership is the biggest problem for me. Expected Carrick as the senior player to be the manager on the pitch. Because LVG was busy playing sudoku or whatever he finds fascinating on that pad.It is worrying going forward that the team can not motivate themselves when things may not be going to plan.

With the number of injuries we have, its going to be a miracle for us to get many positive results for the rest of the season. Might as well write it off now :(

True. I am all for LvG to go. He has been given time and money and support from fans. He has tried his philosophy. Altered his thought. Tried various players in various positions and has spectacularly failed at delivering the goods. But sacking him will only solve part of the problem. It is essential that players need to step-up

We lacked the fight in the second half. LVG often hits the mark with his more specific analysis post-games, and he said this as well. The issue is that he isn't able to fix problems that he knows exist. Not unusual given he has failed at United and has no long term future here.

However, it is surprising that the players lacked that drive and ambition themselves, given I would have thought the players would want to restore some pride by winning the competition. When you're away from home to a team like this, if you match their effort, or at least 80% thereof, you'll get a good result. We weren't up for it in the second. They won most 50-50 challenges, and as a result, won the game (deservedly).

The players are as much to blame as he is, they're absolutely incapable of knuckling down and grinding out wins. There's such a shocking lack of ambition and drive in the squad, it's actually pretty bonkers.

On a related note, how has Herrera managed to get a rating as high as 2.3!?! People have actually rated him 3/10 for yesterday's performance?

We need gifs of these moments.

- The lead up to the second goal, where their player was actively struggling to get control of the ball... literally kicking accidentally the ball against his own feet at times.... All whilst Love and Carrick just sort of stared at him and gave him the time and space to control it properly. Then Mata scampers in, decides this is the perfect moment - on the edge of your 18 yard box - to try nick the ball away from someone, fecks it up completely... and yer man, who now has control of the ball, has a load of space to shoot, because Love and Carrick are still mesmerised by his bambi-on-ice like moves.

At least the nightmare was before I got to bed last night. Woke up to the usual press drivel and silly excuses. For any player to put on our shirt and play like most did last night, the exception being Romero, they deserve a total salary cut and transfer listing. I can tolerate youthful indiscretions like over exuberance, tiredness, and silly fouls, but to play without ambition for our club is a disgrace. No excuse, the rot has set in, the manager is now all excuses and no ideas, and the players don't play, even against rank shite. The fans are close to losing it and I agree with them after all that money to go last night. This is grim and the club needs someone to take it by the scruff of the neck and pull us out of this malaise before we turn into Liverpool.

This is the flat dressing room from the beginning of the season rearing it's ugly head. With all the technical flaws and poor executions, a team with a few characters and strong mentality would have finished them off in the first 20 minutes of the 2nd half. If you miss and miss again, and again and again, that means you're doing something right and if you continue you'll score. But they thought it isn't working so they gave up the siege.

Didn't watch the game, but put fiver on them to beat us.

I'd much rather be a fiver poorer.

Absolutely. How people can not blame players as well I dont get. They've been as shit as LVG

 They'd struggle to spell the word between them, even if Martial did the first 4 letters for them.

How did we come to this. How is that guy still in a job. Utterly amazing if you think about it.

Pretty much my thought, though I haven't seen anything from Pereira or keane to suggest they should be given a chance.

How players like Depay, Herrera and Carrick can get caught so much with the ball was baffling, Smalling has gone into Moyes mode where he has lost all composure, Blind one of our best passes resorting to hoof ball, Mata being Houdini. Lingard missing a simple opportunity through lack of composure. All these players really let the youth players down. Nothing to do with tactics and game plan.
