Manchester United 2:1 Liverpool

Post-match discussion

Sat, 10 March 2018

Why do all our players tweet about the atmosphere? Surely part of clubs plan to raise the image.
A few of the players we’ve got at the moment, like Lukaku, Young, amongst others, really seem to enjoy interacting with the crowd which is nice to see.

Great win. Did not enjoy the game as it was nailbiting till the end. Defenders played very well and Young was outstanding against Salah. Rashord was good as was Lukaku, but McTominay was really oustanding throutout the match. He was everywhere breaking up the play and putting in tackles. This I felt was his breakout game. Not sure if Pogba would have made such a defensive contribution if he was playing instead of McTominay.

They've defaulted to "we should have had four penalties and United should have been down to 8 men! Robbed!"

Mourinho said he didn't tell the players to play defensively in the second half (not the first time he's denied giving instructions to play defensively post-match). He wanted the players to continue attacking, but they were intelligent enough to recognize they needed to buckle down to thwart Liverpool's attack. So they did. Mourinho teams feel really comfortable playing defense, and I think they turn to it as a safety blanket.

Even Carragher pointed out it wasn't a Mourinho directive.

He was shown during the second half screaming at them to put the defense line up the pitch.

What..Pogba has time to learn to put effort in?
Sanchez worked his backside off today in a team not suited to his style. If we're making excuses for players I think it's fair to give Sanchez time to see if we can make it fit...in the meantime he can at least work hard which he is and Pogba most definitely isn't.
Sanchez was out on his feet near the end but still saw him sprinting to get back.

At the end of the day, how successful Sanchez has been for United, it'll be gauged by the number of goals he scores and assists he provides, not by how much he tracks back. No one cares or looks at that stats. Let me reiterate the age of Sanchez and that of Pogba. Pogba is not required to score goals but Sanchez is. So try and understand my concern as well as frustration over Sanchez.

"You can have control without the ball. You can have control with the ball."

"Even if people thinks we didn't deserve. I don't care. 3 points. We have Tuesday match. Let's go home."

"I have match on Tuesday. We have won and I don't care with what people thinks. I'm sure 3x. The boys were happy. I am happy."

Yeap, and he made the changes early to get better control of the ball upfield and played more attacking, which we did with Fellaini the big factor.

They needed us to help them score. Lol!

Mourinho got the tactics right. I was asking for Rashford to be replaced even before he did. Was really fearful of a red, so I don't get fans who booed at his substitution. 2 goals up, I would have also parked the bus and hit them on the counter. I remember an Arsene Wenger who claimed the aim of soccer was the score goals and let slip a 2 goal lead when his team insist on attacking and losing the ball at injury time.

Pools fans are delusional to ask for penalty and red cards. The only red card I saw was the arm into Tominay' s neck.

The frustrating part for me was how when United finally did win the ball back, it was quickly given away, not giving the defense the time to actually push the line up the pitch.

The fans in the stadium didn't like the switch when it was announced, but I think it's because that type of substitution in the past has lead to inviting the opposition to attack even more. But against Liverpool, the exact opposite happened -- Fellaini was instrumental in helping get the ball up the pitch and keeping it there. Great sub.

Very good performance from United, well taken goals from Rashford. Mata should have added a 3rd but the only thing that matters is that we have the 3 points. We looked defensively very solid with anything that Liverpool tried in the second half. The so called danger players for Liverpool were shackled out of the game

Like I said during the game, the Fellaini one was a penalty. You're a fan, but you can still be objective, specially afterwards and we won;) Now stick another lover tag at me.
Would help balance if you also pointed out Loveren should have had a red card for that elbow on Mc Tominay.

What a game of football that was.
Mourinho showing his tactical masterclass once again. The look on klopp's face towards the end of first half told the whole story. Upwards and Onwards!

20 times 20 times Man United, 20 times 20 times I say. 20 times 20 times Man United, playing football the Busby Way!

Go feck yourself you Scouse Bastards.

Just got around to MOTD this morning. They're convinced the Valencia handball and Fellaini tackle were 100% stone wall penalties. These are suppose to be professionals of the game, what shite are they on about?

1. Valencia's hand was down by his side in a natural position. There's no way any referee gives that, ever.
2. Fellaini was fouled by Mane in a tangle of legs. The Belgian Mop was first to the ball ffs.

Aye fair enough just watched it back and perhaps he could have done better. Always think that a keeper is more prone to error in an own goal situation however, proving even DDG is human.

Without doubt think it’s the element of surprise that catches him out.

Highly satisfying! I take back the negativity, I was convinced we'd get a mild hammering yesterday. But Jose got his tactics immaculately spot-on. First half, we carved them up like nobody's business - two good goals, especially the first, from Rashford. Defensively we were brilliant, to a man - especially Bailly, minus the clumsy own goal.

I knew Jose would sit back in the 2nd half and I knew it'd become a siege. I could barely watch the final 10mins, but the lads stood firm and that's a massive, massive 3pts for us. 5 point cushion now, time to knuckle down and grit out the remaining games - huge game on Tuesday, would be the icing on the cake if we could win convincingly.

Im sat in a bar in Rome watching at the end of my weeks holiday. Ive been around the colosseum, the trevi fountain, the vatican, pantheon, st Peters basilica, sistine chapel, spanish steps and countless other amazing sights but this has been the highlight of my holiday so far.
love it

Just rewatched the first half... we absolutely dominated it. Not sure where the attack vs defence narrative came from, we had about six excellent opportunities, they had one. We controlled the midfield, we looked dangerous every time we attacked down the left, Lukaku won the majority of his duels. We produced some really high quality football.

We were winning every individual battle: Bailly and Valencia had Mane on a string, Young disappeared Salah, McTominay made the Ox look like the newcomer, Mata just ignored Can and orchestrated attacks on the left instead. Lukaku isolated and bullied Lovren every chance he got. The only area on the whole pitch where 'pool got any joy was Van Dijk attacking corners vs Smalling, and they only managed to produce one real chance from that all game.

The second half then became more of a bus parking exercise, but the first was just a straightforward walkover.

Your nothing but a cultural name dropper:D

I wondered about the 1st half too, if Mata had scored just before HT, they'd have been saying this is a rout, Liverpool haven't created anything apart from a header at a corner. Utd have carved open LFC several times.

But, as for the respective styles of football, theirs is a lot easier on the eye than ours. It leaves them open to direct (quick / long ball) counter attacking though. This is where the space is.

2nd half - I'm not so sure, but 2-0 is a decent lead while it stays at 2-0. Scoreboard control & scoreboard pressure, you could even go to 3-0 from a set piece, a penalty, a 2 man attack or whatever. Why offer up the counter-attack to the losing side? Maybe this is modern footy at the top level. Utd turned down some attacking opportunities simply to retain possession.

Defences have a tendency to sit very deep these days - if you can get out & offer a threat it's fine but not so good for your team if that isn't happening. Fellaini sub was effective & well-timed yesterday.

Every time Liverpool acts all big and mighty, pumped up by the media like they're second coming and god given gift to football they crash to the land hard.
And may they never change.

My first baby was born yesterday. So I didn’t go to the game, watched at the hospital (costing £15!!!) holding him. Considering naming him Marcus!

What an amazing weekend! Hopefully the guy I gave the ticket to bought me a program as a souvenir for the baby.
Congrats! Two great days for you then :)

This is a good point and shows how fickle and lazy journalism can be.

The Mata chance came at the end of a nice passing move where Liverpool were carved apart down their right flank

If that goes in it doesn’t fit the narrative that has enveloped the game. Small margins.

Reckon Liverpool fans probably come away reasonably (but falsely) happy as their team hasn’t been totally exposed as a fraud yet, and they can play the Mourinho victim card about long balls, defensive football, and some ref decisions that would’ve been immaterial at 3-0.

How does one bad game expose a team as fraudulent? Even if you’d beaten us 5-0 yesterday it wouldn’t have made us frauds.

We’ll probably beat Watford next week and finish comfortably in the top four and this game won’t matter. It’s a disappointment and a good learning experience in what’s been a decent league season for us so far.

Great result. Missed the game so can't judge the performance but looking at the highlights suggests we were comfortable most of the game. De gae was quiet which is a positive for our defence. Fantastic for Jose on a tactical view. He certainly knows how to exploit the oppositions weakness. Playing rashford on the left was a masterstroke.

Moving forward I worry that these narrow wins and/or keeping these narrow leads going into the last 20/30 mins of games will eventually hurt us as we naturally become very negative holding them. It doesn't bode well for our nerves. I'd like to see us attack more especially at home and not switch off completely in attack.

I think it might hurt you if/when you come up against one of the better sides in Europe. Sitting back with a lead against those sides might not work out as well.

I think it’s concerning for us as well because the likes of Real and Barcelona would have no problem exploiting our defence like United did yesterday.

I hope we don’t get you in the quarter final.

The team has been over-hyped and over-praised (largely driven by your own support) because of some one-sided games against poorly drilled sides.

The team is a fraud because it’s not really a proper team. It has three good attacking players papering over all manner of cracks, namely an average midfield, defence and goalkeeper.

I think we had the opportunity to expose this to a greater degree yesterday but did not. And I imagine Liverpool fans are somewhat relieved about that.
