EL L Europa League Round of 16 1st Leg

Liverpool 2:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Did we piss off an LvG team in the past? Why is he trying to turn us into Everton?

I'm starting to hate De Gea. He's a pain in the arse! Good win but there's still a job to be done. If we score at Old Trafford I think it's over.

Neither of us will win the Europa League I don't think.

This tie is over. At least Klopp shows passion and has your team playing with fervour. Don't think you guys will win EL either but at least you guys will enjoy a pretty deep run.

Truly pathetic. Pathetic manager and a pathetic team he's assembled.

Gutless, spineless, woeful.......against a mediocre, mid-table team who played with far more passion. #LVGOUT

You score an early goal against us on the night and it'll crank the volume up and anything could happen from there. I'm not going to assume anything until it's over.
This is a beaten team before they even step onto the pitch. Maybe under another manager. Van Gaal has coached all the fight out of them. He has coached all the football out of them, really.

Liverpool rested their key players last weekend ahead of this game. They will have a full week's rest before the replay. United have a must-win cup quarter final. Stacks the odds a little.

It's absolutely disgusting, it wasn't even a minority of people either, could clearly hear it. Bitter dickheads.

Agreed. It will be interesting to see whether the inevitable Munich chants, aeroplane gestures get the same level of media attention next week. 2 wrongs don't make a right but I wonder if 'the best fans int he world' will be criticised in similar way by BBC & co.

Fellaini's challenge on Emre Can: “I have to say that Fellaini was one of the best players on the pitch. I’m very sorry when he makes a mistake like that [alleged foul on Can not punished by the referee]. I haven’t seen it."

Fellaini has been one of our better Players in the second half as well as Schneiderlin. Everybody else has been pretty useless. Especially our attacking Players have been a total Desaster.

It is really Strange that we have the world`s best Goalkeeper but anybody else seems to be 2 classes below.

Overall the result i not too bad thanks to Dave and we still have a Chance. However, with a Display like yesterday we do not deserve to go through.
Liverpool are not the best Team in the world but one can clearly see that they Keep improving. Pretty sure they will overtake us in the league as well.

Reading a few reports the consensus seems to be that Liverpool is not the finished article by any means by Klopp had his tactics spot on and LVG was just simply being his usual conservative cautious self (i.e., let's sneak an away goal and keeping it close for the return leg). So from the get go we were on the back foot. Worse their players all whooped ours in their respective individual battles and got after us. Our players simply wilted. Sound right?

Absolutely. Look, in this type of match, I don't mind him being conservative - like I said, I would have dropped Rashford to the bench; the penalty was unlucky, but we did not have any plan B, no attacking options on the bench.

As a neutral, I think Liverpool are getting way too much credit. The only reason United are still in with a shout is because the Scousers totally lacked a cutting edge and clinical nature up front. Honestly, they looked timid at the start but grew into the game (how could they not when United are playing so passively and meek?).

Honestly, I think all it takes is an early United goal at OT next week and that timid Liverpool will be on show again. If they get to ~30 minutes still 0-0, I'm afraid they'll probably do you on the counter attack.

Have the BBC or anyone else criticised the United fans?

Timid Liverpool? De Gea was amazingly good and kept the score down singlehandedly.

Even if Liverpool concede early next week they'll know 1 goal from them will mean United have to score 4.

Liverpool are getting credit because they played very well.

It was an embarrassing United performance, and that's putting it mildly. The player showed no passion, no fight, no interest, nothing... feels as low as the lowest points of Moyes tenure (0-3 losses v City & Liverpool).

Regardless I thought we shot ourselves in the foot in the 2nd half. Liverpool were very good in the first half and only thanks to De Gea's saves we weren't down 0-3 at HT. They lacked cutting edge in the second period IMO, which came to no surprise due to their high tempo football in the first half, until Carrick decided to hand them a goal on the silver plate.

If we score first at Old Trafford.... nah. That team is just dead.

I'm sure that every player goes through a bad spell - but we're talking about virtually every player, and pretty much every game. That's not normal.

Every time we have 'a run' the team is chopped and changed - sometimes from necessity, but frequently, not.

For instance, Herrera and Mata had a great partnership last year. How can that develop when they're in and out of the side?

There's too much wrong for it just to be the players and imo it started with the stupid philosophy of possession football because it's stifled any natural instinct/ability.
As soon as Herrera and Morgan have built up an understanding he has broken that up as well. Does he realise that good teams are built on partnerships all over the pitch and understanding. This club is being run by old men, yes I'm going to say it, living in the past and complete and utter imbeciles.

I'm not watching that many United matches, but haven't seen so many hoofs from defense or hail marys to the frontal area of the pitch in a while. Is this a thing in the PL still? If not, it's a sign of a deeply discouraged team.
There's absolutely no composure at the back any longer.

You'd think we'd be up for this game given it's our last chance for CL.
We were never going to be up for it, just look at the build up for the game. Klopp was all over the game really excited and that tranmitted to his players. LvG more or less played the game down. He has no idea how to motivate his players.

Without De Gea I think we'd be discussing the merits of petitioning UEFA to not make us play the second leg to save us further embarrassment. In the past we've had off days and lost first legs but I always had the confidence we would turn it around. Next Thursday, what even tiny reason for optimisim is there? There are 2 gaping problems - firstly we need to score at least twice to even think about extra time. And secondly that is under the assumption that they won't score, which they almost certainly will as unless something changes drastically they will continue to cut through us at will. And that will leave us needing 4 and I'm not even going to merit that scenario with a response.

All in all a real low point in a season full of them. Where is the consistency? Win at Pool in the League, lose at home to Southampton. Win at home to Arsenal, lose at West Brom. I'm more sick of all the false dawns than the playing style itself.

I still think there are several players in this squad worthy of wearing the shirt, #1 being our #1 obviously but it's clearer than ever after last night that LvG is not going to start bringing trophies back to OT.

Klopp managed the game & occasion well. Extra man subbed into MF when we got a foothold in the game for 10mins.

Seems to have all his players diving well at every opportunity. Extended YAWN dirge pre-match.

Always said he was a twat.

Suppose it's too late for an investigation of their song preferences during the bunking-in years.

Yeah I agree the rotation has killed us, I'm not sure what the idea behind that is, but that's definitely a managerial fault.

Mata has arguably been one of our best players recently and then goes and ballsed it up against west brom. Herrera has actually been very inconsistent this season, so I would put it down to the players on that example. I do agree there is probably too many to solely be the players, but I think it's all come from the players not playing to the standard they should be playing at and that has subsequently caused poor decisions from the manager, that he's forced to do with an underperforming squad. Again, I'm not saying he shouldn't be sacked for it, as ultimately he has the final say on things. I really don't blame him as much as some do though and I think our problems are far deeper rooted

Agree with your final sentence, but he hasn't helped. Signings-wise especially, apart from Martial.

Anyone still reckon we are in contention for a top 4 finish?

We were awful on the night but that second goal was totally avoidable. Catalogue of errors. Think it was Depay who gave the ball away unnecessarily. Then the linesman fails to see that Henderson was clearly offside. Then Carrick gives it to them, on a plate, three yards from goal. Complete calamity. At 1-0 I'd have fancied our chances in the return leg, but 2-0 is a killer blow.

It's incredible how we seem so fragile at times. First 5-10 minutes we seemed to be in control. I even remember the commentators stating that United were bossing things and the confidence comes from having beaten Liverpool four times on the trot. Then all of a sudden, penalty, bang, we're all over the place for the rest of the half.

Second half, start off well and control the game for 15-odd minutes, then someone, somewhere, flicks the switch and we're all at sea again. We are so inconsistent it's unreal.

Yeah, I think I'm probably just being a bit defensive for him to negate the OTT hate sometimes. He definitely hasn't helped. If you'd of asked me after Arsenal, I would of said yes, but I very much doubt we'll come ahead of West ham at this rate. We should probably we wary of stoke.

Fecking irritated / frustrated with the usual players coming it and saying how they are disappointed, need to learn from the mistakes. Come back and set things right?

In between the good run four fecking games, Morgan comes out and says how they sat down and discussed the problems and they are now a thing of past. How, how bloody how can these players keep coming out with this crap after every match?

Also, it would not be a surprise if the amount of matches we have lost in the past 3 seasons might be more than the last 8-10 years of fergie.

I went to a gig instead of watching the game.

I saw the starting line up and decided I'd give going straight home to watch it on record after a miss aswell, so I just got home.

I can tell you now, without watching a minute of the game, that Liverpool would have pressed high up the pitch, and the players LVG chose to play at centreback and in midfield, would have been unable to cope. If I'm wrong fair dos but I'd put money on not being, because Scheniederlin and Blind have zero composure under pressure, which means we picked a team relying on the passing ability of Smalling and Fellaini.

We're left as usual with the inescapable conclusion that Van Gaal either never watches any football games at all (including our ones), or much more worryingly, does.
It's kind of scary that you can analyse the game this accurately without even watching it. Says a lot about Van Gaal and United in general.

Sturridge star man in the Sun apparently. Scored a penalty and was subbed after 64 minutes. De Gea MOM by a country mile (although team v team I admit we were outclassed).
