EL L Europa League Round of 16 1st Leg

Liverpool 2:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Thu, 10 March 2016

As a neutral, I think Liverpool are getting way too much credit. The only reason United are still in with a shout is because the Scousers totally lacked a cutting edge and clinical nature up front. Honestly, they looked timid at the start but grew into the game (how could they not when United are playing so passively and meek?).

Honestly, I think all it takes is an early United goal at OT next week and that timid Liverpool will be on show again. If they get to ~30 minutes still 0-0, I'm afraid they'll probably do you on the counter attack.

And given how easily we score goals early in the first half we are doomed.

Im completely disillusioned. It was a shambles. There didn't seem to be a gameplan. No threat going forward. All I know is Real, Barca , Bayern et al would not put up with this kind of mediocrity.

Timid Liverpool? De Gea was amazingly good and kept the score down singlehandedly.

Even if Liverpool concede early next week they'll know 1 goal from them will mean United have to score 4.

Liverpool are getting credit because they played very well.

Please realize that LVG at United make most of their opponents look good.
West Ham for example, played much better at Anfield

Giant Club but,
Small Minded Mentality.

It's the consistancy of our poor performances that grates the most.

Even with the major injury problems we've had, it shouldn't be this poor.

So it's the same answer as ever from me, it's not losing, it's the manner of the loss.

Passing sideways/backwards with a minute left? Who am I watching again? If there's a lesson from Liverpool, it's that a crap squad can be made to play together, dig in & keep together. Eventually something will give, against us a soft pen, against Palace a soft pen & gift goal. Not to say that they didn't deserve the win & wouldn't have won anyway.

Where's our fight gone to? I struggle to have any belief in anyone at United as long as Fellaini is considered worthy of the shirt.

I agree United are making poor teams look good. Liverpool have been just as bad as United some weeks but no team could not play well against that feeble United team last night. did those United players even realise how big a game it was? It doesn't matter that it was only the Europa league. It was a game against Liverpool. Our biggest rivals and the players and coaching staff completely let us down. I hope they enjoyed being laughed out of town.

One point that McManaman made is really bugging me and I am not sure whether it should (and Scholsey did have the perfect answer, so I think it should in fact after all):

He said if United win their next two games (the latter by 3 goals obviously) then Van Gaal will be a hero again.

Giggs, Rooney (a scouser in it for himself so doesn't really count for me) and probably Carrick are the only real link to Scholes' United now - the other players and worst of all, the manager, really do not seem to get what playing for United means.

Why are the former 2 not having the influence? I always thought Carrick was a bit of a quiet type, he's not really a leader, but Giggs should be making people understand.

This is a collection of mercenaries really - professionals, doing a job, fairly badly. They know the market, their worth, they're on massive money, but generally seem to have little real connection with the club and it's traditions and history.

Would Mourinho be any different? I suspect not.

Coz LvG and Fellaini are friends. Normal players need to get fit, play an U21 match, then get 20 mins, 60 mins and then 90 mins. But Fellaini can start playing straightaway anytime.

I did wonder why LVG said that Valencia would be on the bench and would get some time but BFS would not be ready.............. then the team sheet comes out and Valencia is no where and BFS (not ready) is on the bench and gets fitness time??????

Looking forward to getting to OT for a game but not looking forward to maybe spending £500 to watch a game that I will undoubtedly be sh1tting myself watching this dross.

Any decent side, organised, with decent (not even top, top players..) players, who play well will completely expose us. How can you enjoy playing for that team.

We were really poor, our play... just consider the quality of our play last night, this season. Dreadful. It was embarrassing. Players couldn't get off the pitch quick enough.

Get Giggs in for the last few games if that has been done and dusted and see if we can nick a top four. Unlikely though.

I bet West Ham can't wait...

Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse last night happened. One of our worst performances against that lot not because of the score line but that we failed to show up especially after the hype of beating them. We looked like schoolboys against me and I barely recall a chance on target. Scholes called our game ambitions Arsenal and Rio correctly observed that the new crop of players aren't a patch on those sold. Both LVG and Moyes have destroyed what took 20 years to build. LVG has tried to justify it on the grounds of history but the fact remains he has been inept in the transfer market, his teams are are not motivated, and his tactics are nonsense. What might work on paper or in his head doesn't in practice. Moyes was out of his depth, but LVG is out of his head and his pseudo-science the workings of a charlatan. After 2 seasons last night showed no progress, disorder, and the ill-discipline that comes from being played out of position; the team last night was blunt in both selection and tactics. I defy any member of the board to believe LVG has been progress and still represents our future.

That's the kind of performance where I'm embarrassed as a fan of Manchester United. That just can't happen. People can argue about both goals having shouts of illegitimacy, but I think they were both 50/50 at worst and went for the other team, it happens. We were played off the park regardless and probably deserved to lose by three or four. We have to thank our lucky stars de Gea stayed, but LvG has basically ruined our chances of having one of the best goalkeepers in the world next season as he is fecking going and I can't blame him!

I just don't even know what else to say.. I can't believe he still has the job when fourth is gone and we're not going to overturn a 2-0 defeat in the second leg. Looks like he will stay until the end of the season, but it will be interesting to see what happens if we fail to beat West Ham, get knocked out by Liverpool and lose to Man City.. Everything will be over if we fail to win the next three games and I think it's a shambles that LvG is in the position where the chance is his to turn it around.

The club is a shambles from top to bottom and we can kiss goodbye to a lot of the revenue if things don't change drastically with a new manager in the Summer.

I'd agree with this. United were poor but Liverpool weren't overly impressive to me. DDG made a few saves but nothing like Gordon Banks on steroids as the media seem to be making out. They scored a debatable penalty (just) and a tap in from a mistake (which looked offside anyway).

We aren't out of the tie at 2-0. It's more disappointing that we could have got something had we turned up.

Pool were bang average. We managed to outs**t them and give them the confidence to play better.

Have the BBC or anyone else criticised the United fans?

Yes.

One example
'United fans have let themselves down'
5 live Sport's Juliette Ferrington says there were unsavoury chants heard from the away end at Anfield during Liverpool's 2-0 Europa League win over Manchester United.

United fans were reportedly heard chanting in reference to the Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 Liverpool supporters died in 1989.

Ferrington said: “It wasn’t continuous but it was clearly audible maybe four or five times.”

Obviously you need consistency on this but I'm glad it's not being ignored.

This is United... against Liverpool... in Europe - for the first time in my entire life time. If you can't get up for this game, hang your fecking boots up.

This point really hits home for me.

United, against Liverpool, in Europe. And we fecking embarrassed ourselves.

We really are.

What possible sequence of events do you envisage that results in us beating a decent mid-table Premier League team by 3 goals, when they know that they only need a draw?

An away goal after about 25 minutes and it really will be. That said, I can't see us putting 3 past them anyway - who'd score for us? We had one shot last night. ONE.

Exactly. We never even make 3 proper chances in a match, not to mention scoring 3 goals. And the chances of them not scoring while we try and do so are slim, so we can make that at least 4 goals needed.

2-0 is a pretty unassailable lead from the home leg of pretty much any match, regardless of how shite we are. Don't know if anybody has the stats, but I'm pretty sure it's been overturned very, very rarely.

It's hilarious how identical our last two games were (against Pool)

In Jan, we were awful and scraped an undeserved win, which, if we had a lost, may have actually resulted in the bastards sacking.
In March, we play the exact same way. Boring, shit and dysfunctional and we lose. How is it possible to perform the exact same way in two games seperated by two months? It defies all logic. Everything I've learnt in my 24 years is being disproved by Man United.

Outfield player for United, he was close if not the best which is not saying much as the rest were a fecking embarrassment.
No he clearly wasn't. United were poor but (although DDG was obviously on another planet as your best player) even though losing I'd give it to Smalling who generally did well breaking up the wave of attacks on the edge of your box. This from 365 :

The best thing that can be said about Fellaini’s night at Anfield is that he was not sent off, which was only really down to fortune. He should not have been booked for his ‘challenge’ on Clyne, but still committed four other fouls. All could have been worthy of a booking.

In an attacking sense, Fellaini was the albatross around United’s neck. Defensive midfielders and defenders continually looked for his chest or head without any modicum of success, until a cross finally found him in the penalty area seven yards from goal. Fellaini headed wide, naturally.

No shots on target, no chances created, one tackle for every half an hour played and 12 misplaced passes out of 44, most of which were played short, backwards or both. What is Fellaini supposed to be offering other than a lightning rod for the ire of every United supporter in the land?

standard weak performance at Anfield. Liverpool will be just awful at OT. My only question is wether we will take our chances.
Really ? As Scholes and Rio said/intimated ... Liverpool under Klopp are improving all the time. Performances in the big matches have generally all been good to very good, next week is another big match and I've no doubt we'll turn up and score a goal (or two). Meaning of course that United will need to score at least 4 to progress.

No disrespect to Liverpool but they are hardly Barcelona, we should have gone out to get an away goal, entertain the travelling support and not just shut up shop. We are hardly the force we once were but we treated them like royalty and just sat off all night - was like a training session with Liverpool running attacking plays against a dummy team.

DDG will be off come summer - he must be so bored of this utter shite. He was phenomenal and Real have the ban coming up so they will move for him come summer. No doubt in my mind he will be gone.

VG genuinely came out and said Fellaini was one of the best players on the pitch....gob smacked....get them both out of our club.

One of the least enjoyable games of football I have seen in my entire 26 years on this earth.

well we are out of the eu cup now. If West HAM do us this weekend I fear for our club to be honest going forward. Hate saying this but Liverpool looked bloody good with quick decisive passing. We were utter shit.

You have been brutally below par in a lot of games under Klopp very recently. Got extremely lucky at Palace over the weekend as well.

This notion that you are continually improving is a myth and an exaggeration being peddled because of the match last night where we were mind numbingly underwhelming. Mind you, compared to us, you are playing like Barca.

Tell that to Scholes & Rio then. Their opinion or yours ... hmmm tough call.

It's just really weird but the more of our senior players are playing the more ponderous we look. Sometimes I think we should just revert to the lineups we played against Midgetland and Arsenal with loads of youngsters and let them have a go. It's not like we got anything to lose because as it looks right now we won't make the top 4 with our first team players on the pitch every week either.

I said recently that the more first teamers that come back, the bigger problem it will be. LvG yet again stumbled on a team and style that worked. As soon as players came back he wouldn't be able to stop himself messing with the team and undoing the feelgood factor.

I thought exactly the same over recent weeks, Death or Glory lets play the kids and feck off the seniors who cant be arsed.

Those performances were a lot better, the kids were bringing enthusiasm, energy and lack of fear. They pulled the like of Morgan/Ander and Juan along with them. Yet LvG doesn't like this and Carrick comes back, Darmian who cannot play as an attacking fullback. Fellaini is now back, Valencia won't be long. BFS and his bulk will be brought back in. It is sad. God help us if Rooney gets fit he will be back in. Got to get him ready for the Euros don't you know. He will stink the place out, like he does when coming back from injury, get rushed back for England, get injured again and we will be stuck with him.
