Manchester United 4:1 Leicester City

Post-match discussion

I think fellaini has been really good for us this season at what he is supposed to be doing, but the argument people have been making about the team being stronger without Rooney seems to apply just as much with Fellaini too. Having ander in there and mata completely changed the way we played, I wouldn't have dropped fellaini but by doing so we were such a better team. Not entirely sure how removing our tallest player has suddenly made us so deadly on corners.

First United match I've missed this season. Seems like I should miss more matches then??

Super excited to watch the match. Wonderful weekend ahead and I'm three pints of Guinness in! Cheers boys!

Best performance of the season so far. The first half was fantastic and we played really well as a team.

The goals Leicester conceded were strange, as it is weird to lose 3 goals from corner kicks in one game but Mata's goal was beautiful. Understandably we took our foot off the gas in the second half but could have had a few more.

Everyone had a good game but for me Mata, Pogba and Ibrahimovic ran the show.

Brilliant game from us. Ranieri changed it as I expected second half but too little too late.

There were 6 players starting todays match that have come through our academy (Rashford, Lingard, Pogba, Simpson, Drinkwater and Zieler), but you know, our academy's no where near as good as City's.

Or we have to copy Dortmund academy to produce good players like Dortmund fan said. :wenger:

Interesting to note it's the first time we've scored more than 3 goals in the Premier League since we beat City 4-2 at Old Trafford on April 12th 2015 2 seasons ago!

Not saying the following is the answer to all our problems, but I want to see others being given the same amount of chances to impress before that horrible bastard is back in the starting line up.

Most enjoyable game in a long time. Fantastic performance after the first goal.

Petered out a bit in the second half but the game was already over.

We shouldn't get carried away, and we didn't score 4 goals simply because Rooney didn't start.

Before our first goal, they were the better team. We had several defensive mistakes and lots of gaps in our back. 3 of our goals are set pieces, wich is a very good thing but not an indication that we were drastically improved. Yes, the absence of Rooney allowed us to play with more fluidity and fast tempo, but a midfield of Pogba & Herrera still is no good. If Mou insists on playing with 2 man midfield, then either Carrick or Blind should partner Pogba and not Herrera of Fellaini.

On any case it was an improved performance overall that should give the players a huge moral boost, and we should build on that.

I would imagine against the big teams or away from home, Fellaini or someone tall will start.

That I partly disagree, that works in home games and against weaker sides, the bigger teams it has to be 433 with carrick anchoring the midfield, with herrera and pogba pushing forward in the Barcelona system, where xavi and iniesta could dictate the central area, with sergio holding.

Even if he insists with Pogba and Herrera, if mata is playing off zlaten it will work far better than blind or carrick in there in a midfield 2

I would imagine against the big teams or away from home, Fellaini or someone tall will start.

Fellaini embodies what has been wrong with united this season, if we want to progress has a team, having him in there will hurt the team. What would help united in the big games? well carrick herrera and pogba is pretty much the obvious choice, Pogba even defeats the need for fellaini in the first place, when a new anchor man should have been signed and we cashed in on fellaini has we should have

Excellent display from the boys today....Mata MOTM for me...playing where he should be played, night and day from Rooney....Pogba also played well....Ibra didn't score but had a great match.....still an uphill battle as Leicester didn't play all that well....and we still need to incorporate Miki when he gets back from injury.....we can only go up from here...Rashford is an exciting player to watch will become even better once he sorts out his one on ones....seems to struggle at times when he going at someone in the last third.

With what we've seen of our rivals so far I don't think we have a chance of finishing in the top four if we frequently play Rooney and Fellaini.

Mobility and technique is everything and they have neither. Give Pogba and Zlatan space and surround them with players like Herrera, Mata and Martial and we'll challenge for the title.

Yeah, to be fair Fellaini has been one of our best performers this season, so it feels a bit unfair to bench him, but Herrera just makes our midfield click much better with his amazing movement and one touch passing. Still, i think Fellaini has a role to play. His physical presence can be invaluable at times and if he keeps up the level hes been showing so far he deserves some games.

Regarding Rooney, i think this marked the beginning of the end for him. An abysmal performance vs Northampton followed by a immaculate performance without him speaks volumes. Unless this was the much needed kick up the arse for Rooney and he stages a remarkable resurgence in form, i think this is the end of him as a United regular

Until the first goal - we were not good nor bad. Same old thing and looked dry of anything creative. Leicester were getting a few counter opportunities in which didn't cost us

The first goal went in, we INSTANTLY looked brimming with confidence, made alot of movement and the ball was moving much faster. Hay presto we started looking like Manchester United.

We started playing some very nice football, getting in good spaces and creating opportunities. Especially through Pogba

Defensively - Bailly is a one man wrecking machine. Not to mention he had vardy's number in thay foot race.

Yeah its a weird one, he's not been dropped for playing bad but because we can play a different way without him, Herrera offers something completely different and there will be games more suited to fellaini than today.

Yeah either he comes back fighting or he's entering a new phase of his career and he has to accept that. It looks more likely to be the latter, he also will have something to offer, mainly another body on the pitch against Zorya

Controlled the game well but we'll not always score 3 goals from set pieces against better opposition.
Matas goal was great, would be nice to score a few more from open play.
Rashford has that strikers instinct down!

We won because of our set-pieces. I doubt we'll play another game this season where we're given that much freedom.

We've created precious few goals from open play in recent weeks. The level of playmaking in the middle third was encouraging, though. Not just from Herrera and Mata, but also Blind when he got up the pitch. We need to keep selecting leaders who are capable of passing through the lines consistently.

First half was beautiful
Rooney died for this. Press F to pay respects

Very good first half.
So much for not playing better without Rooney.
So much for corners not being worth putting into the box.

The passing was the difference today. Quick and accurate for the most part in the first half.

Good result but the scoreline flattered us. We won't score 3 goals from corners every week.
We're still not creating much from open play which will be our downfall if we don't improve significantly.

I'm not going to get carried away with today, simply because today says to me that we HAVE to score the first goal.

When we do, it's no problem controlling the match, we're even quite good at it.

When we don't, we rarely look like being able to get back into the match - lack of confidence, a bit fragile, I don't know what it is, but since SAF left us, we've hardly ever come back from being behind.

So today, great displays all round, but special Thanks to Mike Smalling for taking the pressure off.
