Matic, Lukaku and Rashford were bad. Matic really is having a stinker of a season, Lukaku simply needs to be dropped for the moment.

It was the first game in absolutely ages where Smalling wasn't the best centre back in a United shirt. It wasn't his best game, but he didn't do all that much wrong. Lindelof was excellent though, but the two of them were exposed by a non-existent midfield.

His performance (Smalling) was as mediocre as his haircut

 Like a bad film, when the reviews are more entertaining than the main event, you know you're in trouble.

they only beat us 1-0 for Christ sake and didn't have many other clear cut chances. you would've thought we were trashed 4-1
There he is! Ashley Young and Lingard and Smalling and Herrera and Mata and Rashford and Fellaini. They can all do a job! Get behind them!

Not with Lukaku in his present form...

I agree the reviews seem a little hyperbolic after a 0-1 against a genuinely top European side, but we're struggling to produce even competent football at the moment and it's clear to oppos and foreign journalists, not just those of us who watch us every week.

He was good throughout except for his one mistake which led to the goal. So, it was quite a conflicting performance as we also lost because of him.

True about Smalling, he has been fairly consistent till now.

Juve is first favourite in CL. World class defence, world class midfield, world class attack. Excellent options on the bench. So why all this drama? They were better, they beat us 1.0, lets move on.

I agree with an earlier post about teams letting our right back have loads of space knowing they are unlikely to hurt anybody. Juve decided early on that Young could be given space and it would be okay. How many times did Young have a 1v1 deep on the wing and not get a cross in? In fact. I think he only made one cross near the byline. And to put salt on the wound, Juve didn't bother to provide a cover defender many times. Young and Valencia both can't create space for a cross when 1v1. This is going to haunt us for the whole season. Add in the fact we do not have a good right winger and it's just gets worse.

Martial has had a good run with the goals but he remains just a dumb player for me. He needlessly gave the ball away with poor dribbling, poor passing and poor touches at least 20 times last night. Contrast that with the intelligent play of Juve's wingers. Such a talented player but with little football insight.

Lindelof had a pretty good game. I wonder if any here will acknowledge that.

Yea agreed , but the whole hue and cry is how Sub standard we looked. We could have surely given them some fight.

No United fan would mind a loss if we went down fighting, but these roll overs are just unacceptable

Lindelof was voted our MOTM so most of us have.

Whilst I agree, there were some very obvious weaknesses in our side exposed. Because we can't hold the ball up top, you can tell your fullbacks to just stay forward or charge forward at first chance. If you've got a good enough passer of the ball like Bonucci, you can just spray balls to the flanks and you are already deep in our half with the ball with at least 4 men.

I think there is the potential in this group for a much more fluid and flexible style of play but it would involve Mou dropping some of his favourites.

De Gea
Young/Dalot
Smalling
Lindelof
Shaw

Perreira/Herrera
Fred
Pogba

Martial
Sanchez
Rashford/Lingard

I think he has to move away from the midfield combinations involving Matic/Fellaini and McTominay, make us far too static and immobile, easy to play through and not effective in moving the ball either. Give the front 3 plenty of freedom to interchange positions, don't fall back on lumping it at Lukaku and Fellaini as the first option.

I think that midfield would get bullied, tbh. It's not like Pogba or Fred are particularly good at keeping possession either. I like the front 3 though, I have always thought that could work.

Can I ask -- where the hell were our scouts with Joao Cancelo? He looks to be a pretty good RB. He might have been a slight upgrade on our current options.

That was the most disgusting performance I've seen in a long time. We were scared first half and both teams didn't create many chances.

I really thought this game was wide open and there would be chances on both ends. Our midfield really sucks and we have no structured play.

Lukaku is the worst striker for United I've ever seen. I would take ANYBODY over him. fecking waste of space that offers NOTHING.

Our midfield gets bullied no matter who is in it, so what difference would it make? Might as well go on the attack.

It was another awful performance, especially in the 1st half when i cant remember us creating even a half chance. If the players cant get up for Juventus at home, they shouldn't be at the club. Time to give Lukaku, Pogba and Matic some time on the bench, because it isn't working. What is worse is that most fans can see this, but the manager cant or wont. We only seem to start playing after half-time for some bizarre reason. Lindelof played well, but he was the only outfield player that did.

I've been saying for about a month that we need to let Matic sit and try either Herrera, Pereira or Fred in the deeper midfield role. I believe it will liven up our play. I would like to see this lineup for 3 or 4 games:

DDG
Valencia-Bailly-Lindelof-Shaw
Fred-Herrera-Pogba
Lingard -Sanchez - Rashford

With Martial, Mata (who deserves to start but can't press very well) and Pereira as subs.

I posted this before the season and still believe this to be true that we have the youth, pace, strength and ability to play an aggressive pressing game defensively. The pace in the team listed above is above average workrates are right.

IF we can't figure out how to attack and score, the at least let's go out and fight for 90 minutes. These 11 would do this. I'd begin with this team and this mentality and build on whatever performances we can get from creating as much havoc as this quick and relatively strong lineup could create.

He said he didn’t expect Chong to come in and score a goal because he has no first team experience.

Can’t wait for this season to finish and the cnut to go - enough is enough.

The problem is not that we lost, as this was expected. The problem for most people was the difference in quality between the two teams.

Not even the quality. The most disappointing part about his whole reign is the constant lack of any true system or style of play, or even the intent to create one. Players looking constantly confused about what they are expected to do, just continue to look poorly coached. Mourinho is on £15 million a year, it is ok to expect more for that than simply picking out targets and sulking when he doesn't get them.

Watched the replay. Kept checking if the feed was buffering slow or lagging every time Matic was in play. Turns out his reaction time is just so so slow. He must be every boxers dream opponent, unbelievable.

Based on that reasoning if Jose was incharge in 2015/16 Rashford would never have emerged. He's not a manager for the younger players.

Am I the only one that wasn't impressed with Juventus? Barring the first 30 minutes they were bang average, and a good attacking side would of put them to the sword.

No, they started Bentancur and Cuadrado who both shouldn't really be starters. They need Bernardeschi and Costa to step up if they want to win the Champions League.

They gave the ball away in forbidden areas countless times in the second half too and every time there's a cross going Bonucci's way you can feel the panic settling in.

They're very good but they're going to need to improve.

Well continuing on from last season, I dunno what you expected. We were fairly lucky to come 2nd last season due to having superman in goal, but we were never near the top sides in Europe and feebly dropped out of the CL at the hands of Sevilla. We also came 20 odd points behind our league winners. fast forward 5 months and why would we have "narrowed the gap?" We signed 2 players, none of which get any airtime so basically have last seasons team which was no where near Juve in the 1st place, where as they have added Cristiano and Bonucci (£231million worth of expenditures in total). Did you think we would run them close or even beat them? We are on a run of one win in like six. Why is this the result that shocked or deflated the fanbase? there is and will be plenty more to get up in arms over, trust me.

Roll over could be due to a top, top notch defence vs a rubbish attack. I expected little else

You had me until Valencia!

I wouldn't go as far as you, I thought they very good, but certainly beatable. The first decent cross into their box Chiellini was pulling the shirt of Lukaku, Rashford put a bit of pressure on Bonnuci at the end and he give up possession cheaply. I just wonder what a team doing that for 90 mins would get.I don't see a team in Europe right now who I think is way ahead of anybody, so on that basis I'd say Juve are defo one of the favourites. Without doubt a very good team but you let a team esp in the 1st half have 70% possession and any decent team will excel. We'd 3 touches in their box in 1st half- madness....

I believe they're putting in the effort. The players just aren't good enough against the likes of Juventus. Inferior in every position bar De Gea.
I see what you're saying, i wish we had Bentancour and Matuidi at the club instead of Pogba and Fred...

I cant believe that there are still people here manage to find reason to defend the clown of a manager we have.

As Luke Shaw said in his post match interview, we showed Juventus way too much respect in the first half.

We allowed Bonucci and Chiellini to get on the ball, and when you give players of that quality time to pick a pass they will. Time and time again, one of the centre backs received the ball and simply distributed to one of the midfielders, where they started the play.

Second half changed. Yes, we were still quite poor going forward, but instead of Mata marking Pjanic so that Juve could not play through him, he and Lukaku pressed onto the centre backs, meaning they couldn't play from the back with the same amount of ease they did in the first half.

Actually, we won the ball quite high up the pitch on a few occasions yesterday in the second half from pressing. Unfortunately, our decision making in the final third was awful yesterday, and because of that we, weren't able to punish Juventus.

Mourinho will talk about the gulf in class, and yes they have some quality players, however, when you give players the sort of time we gave them in the first half, then of course they're going to look a class above.

I honestly think had we started the game with the type of pressing we finished with (pressing in a 442), then we'd have given Juventus a lot more problems. To me, it was much more of a level game in the second half, and as I said before, had we had more quality in the final third, we'd have punished Juve.

Ultimately, the tactics lay with the manager. Mourinho obviously told the team to press in such a manner. It worked against Chelsea so we went with the same thing and didn't work.
