22 fouls, one yellow.

Another weak refereeing performance meant that Feyenoord could get away with constant fouling without punishment and a LOT of fouls went unpunished.

The officials gifted them with the game. Hot with corners but shite with off sides and fouls. At times all the Dutch could do was commit cynical fouls and knew the ref wouldn't do anything. The DeCnut Scouse stamped and didn't even receive a warning. All Hargreaves could do was say how good the Dutch were, which is easy if a side isn't penalised for constant fouling. By the end it was all fouls to stop our game - I hope we batter them at OT.

He emphasized the importance in having fun, positive and lightning fast attack. Away European games were very similar to tonight but home games we tore it up. I'm annoyed that we still have some shit floating around but relaxed in the fact that we have the right guy in charge.

I am to...I hope people are patient. This is a big big job here at United.

Ashley Young is on a lot of money, Phil Jones is on a lot of money and always injured, Rojo is on a lot of money, is shit, doesn't appear to want to leave, Memphis the same. They will need to take a serious pay cut if they moved somewhere else. They are far too comfy here.
Yep, was thinking along those lines...

I know this is written on here quite often but you just know if that was Fellaini, Rojo, Rooney, Zlatan etc. making any one of those fouls there'd have been an instant yellow card. Actually can't believe they were able to play like that for 90 minutes, Mata alone was hacked to pieces 5-6 times!

I'm fecking livid tonight. Sunday needs to hurry up ASAP.
I have never forgotten what their thug of a player did to Denis Irwin back in the day. They haven't changed. They are thugs. A thuggish team for their thuggish fans.

I think you're trying to set me up horribly here.

All I want is your best mate, women are very sympathetic creatures, sure they'd feel empathy for somebody who wasted two hours for this game.

Disclaimer: I'm shite at those things so I'm not taking any responsibility for possible outcome.

It's day like this I look forward to Rojo not longer being a United player.

Herrera isn't even good as a CM, so much better when he's in front of the back four as his energy comes into use.

But our current manager has chosen them for back ups. Why not get behind them it was their first game tonight!
Relax Twiggy.
Rojo for eg has been bad for a while (not just judging him on tonight). Phil has been injured forever and I can't see him being fit for us ever. Ashley is a nice guy but he needs to move on. We'll see what happens when they play a bit more this season, but I doubt they'll improve much.

Dreadful. A severe case of deja vu, like watching an LvG team again. Horrendous.

Agree. He rested players in crucial positions, especially fullbacks. And I thought players like Rojo and Darmian will give all to impress. Especially Darmian, since he has a 30 years old winger ahead of him.

But I guess they can't be really bothered by getting millions every year for doing feck all.
Problem he has is that it was rumoured he was trying to move quite a number of them on, didn't so then he has to say he wants them. Then they only get to play in the cup competitions. Why should some of them bother? They are getting well paid. When you get that it is difficult for the other players in that team to do enough to win the game when they are carrying most of their teammates.

Remember the excitement when everyone thought Ashley was joining Palace because he was seen on a train?

he worst place to stutter, I'm sure Jose will have gained a lot of valuable info on some fringe players (see ya Rojo)

Still a very winnable group and I would expect a big response at the weekend, which is more important!

Can a loss be a win?

Yep. I really like him, but I think it's time he moved on. In any case, he's not our biggest problem right now. First thing's first - win on Sunday with whomever is on the pitch:D

truth be told. Its early days in the season and this team is a work in progress. It will take them time to fully implement Mourinho"s defensive and attacking ideas
Why will it take them time when Guardiola needed no time? I've asked this question a couple of times already and I just want an answer that makes sense; from anyone.
I fully support Mourinho and wanted him here. I think he'll win trophies with us.
But what are the reasons he needs time to "settle" and the players need time to get used to him and his ways, when Guardiola and City didn't need that?
Is it because Guardiola is better than Mourinho? Is it simply because someone like Fernandinho is so much better than Fellaini, or De Bruyne is so much better than Rooney, for example? Can two of their players being so much better than ours in the same positions really mean that the whole team plays so much better, with a plan, with a purpose?
It's not simply form, is it? City aren't just playing good football, they're playing good Guardiola football and it's only mid-September.
So why has he been able to drill it into them without any time needed, while Mourinho needs time?
I genuinely don't mean this as anything against Mourinho, I just don't believe in the whole "things happen" bullshit, there's a reason for everything and when you're trying to be the best, excuses shouldn't be part of the plan.

Nothing to see here guys - those who have watched Jose 's Chelsea in cl away matches will know . They scored an offside goal and got a narrow escape.

I am still mad about last Saturday though !

Do we really scout players before throwing away millions?
Memphis cost us 30 million, so much mediocrity all over the pitch
What annoys me is his mentality. He always looks out for himself. Even he has 1/1000 chance of scoring, he'll take the shot, without making a glance to see if anyone else are in a better position. He has the skills to be a very good player imo, he just needs to get into his head that his not ALL about him. Which most people would after a couple of underwhelming seasons, just not Memphis...

Blind - Bailly partnership has worked pretty well, wouldn't tinker that. Smalling has been very good last season but he's the one who may have to wait on an proper opportunity. Its always nice to have good options like the 3 of them vying for the 2 spots.
IMO it's not that much that Smalling is worse than Blind or Bailly, but the fact that Smalling is similar to Bailly in skill set and playing style(though not as extreme), and playing the two of them together will expose their collective weakness, build up play. Playing either of them alongside Blind is the generally best way to go this season imo, at least until Smalling gets match fit. He is better than Bailly in build up play from what i have seen so far...

Positives:
- First look for Mourinho at Rojo, Schneiderlin, Depay and Young in a competitive game, now he will know not to play them.
At this rate he's quickly running out of players he trusts. Scratch those, and Lingard + Mkhitaryan after the weekend. I know Zlatan lauds him for being honest and direct with his players. But there is honest, and then there is this. Telling players straight out on international tv that he cannot trust them hardly seems like good man-handling imo... He's the proven winner though... Problem is how he deals with [searching for the right word here] problems, he still needs to solve this...
- More evidence that Mata should never play on the wing, ever.
- Pretty strong statement by subbing Martial and Rashford off for playing shit.
Rashford wasn't shit imo. He tried and wanted, but supply was shit, and interest was hardly there from teammates.
- It's only Europa league and we'd be better off going out in the group stage, honestly.
If it's "only Europa League", shouldn't even our second stringers be walking it? First game for a lot of them, but it's not like they walked in off the street, they're all professional footballers bought for millions of pounds, training all week long even though they haven't played competive matches recently. At best it is lack of interest and motivation, which is worrying enough imo, and definately not a positive.

Negatives:
- Everything else.
See in blue above...

This work in progress. Transition. Or whatever you want to call it. I don't buy any of this.
MCFC, Chelsea and MUFC - all teams got new managers at the same time.
And we have just lost 2 matches in a row.

We have a Galatico class manager, so there is no excuse for losing 2 games in a row.

This! Now, even though i wasn't super excited about getting Mourinho as our manager, i figured it was the "safest" option out of the ones we had. Proven PL manager who always wanted to come here. Worries was his style of football and how he deals with our kind of pressure. He needs to sort out how he deals with the rough times, and that fast, cause if he looses another couple of games on the trot he is on the same path as he was with Chelsea last season. He's not gonna get sacked here until this season is over almost no matter what happens, but still. He needs to figure this out, it's all in the mentality imo. He knows how to make underdogs top dogs and how to keep the top dogs on top( at least for a couple of seasons). What he needs to figure out is how to make the underperformers performe to the max of their ability. Even though it looks kind of similar to making underdogs->top dogs, it is dramatically different psyhologically speaking i'd guess. (i'm not a shrink, so basically just guessing :wenger:)

An axis which consists of Bailly-Smalling and Schneiderlin-Herrera can't play counter attacking, possession or any kind of football at top level. There's no one to control the tempo, there's no one to play the first ball out from the back and there's no one to carry the ball forward and generally connect the lines in the first two thirds of the pitch.

By playing Blind at the back we managed to get away with the likes of Fellaini and the other experiments in the midfield against lesser opponents but if Mourinho insists on deploying lineups whose only strengths are height and physicality we will see more of what we witnessed today and against City.

At one point Carrick or Blind have to play in front of the defense and help us gain a few yards on the pitch when we are on the ball by using their passing skills and vision. This doesn't have to do anything with dropping Rooney either, we can't just keep hoofing the ball. We must learn to spot the right passes. Today Rashford kept working the channels and stretching the defense, Mata and Martial were moving in central positions in between the lines but there was no good service to them

This is as much on Mourinho as on the players. These tactics or lack thereof are horrendous.

It's not an easy job. Many of these players were not match fit, so he has to balance trying to give them games versus actually having tactics to win the game. The referee also was poor, not just for the offside goal, but for allowing the constant fouling to break up our plays. Ref should have handed out multiple yellow cards in the first half alone.

I think it's still going to take a handful more games until we get into our stride. Apart from De Gea, the rest of the spine of our team had a player that was playing the first full 90 minutes of the season, so it was always going to be a frustrating game cause of the lack of sharpness.

It could very well get worse before it gets better but we just need to pluck away and grind out the points.

That'll be the honeymoon period over then, for everyone concerned. Time to knuckle down and get points on the board and get tonight's showing behind us. Most of tonight's team will be involved against Northampton and through the EL group stage whether we like it or not.

Jesus..
Some of the posts in the thread make me seem perfectly rational!

It was a second team in a cup no one really wants to be in. Hopefully Jose will realise that some of the overpriced dead weight at the club is just that. If he doesn't learn from this and dish out a few more P45's in January, then I'll be worried.

Not ideal by any stretch of the imagination, but we're a way off LVG and Moyes.
No need for the José Out plane flying over OT just yet!

If this is the case, then they are a bunch of pussies with no aspirations, which, imo, is unacceptable for a professional.

The problems for me are simple- creativity and lack of intensity

1/ other than a low on confidence Martial we do not have a single player who can go past a player at pace and create something. Look at Mane, Bolasie, Hazard Coutinho Sanchez etc etc. We need a winger who can do this.

2/ Mata for me is not a winger and is anonymous when played there, zero dribbles, zero crosses just the cut inside on to his left peg and a pass inside.

3/ there was zero intensity to our play, no pressing, too much respect for poor opposition- we should impose early in game but like the city game we sat back and it was slow slow slow.

4/ mourinho will not stand some of those performances for too long, Darmian and Rojo were awful both offensively and defensively. Morgan swanned about and for all the criticism on here I thought pogba at least tried -

Best team for me

De gea

Valencia Mike Bailly Shaw

Blind Pogba

Rashford Mykitiarhan Martial

Ibra

I really believe Jose will get us a title winning team...but no way this season. There is just too much that has happened over the last three years to wipe away, to change - and that includes inherited players and a mindset. I want him to have the time to really work at United, which no doubt is a team he's always wanted to manage. Apparently he works like a field horse and understands the United of old. He won't produce exactly the same as Ferguson teams, but I really believe he'll create a winning team in his mould in the modern era of what football is today.

Yeah, I'm a fan of his....

If this is the case, then they are a bunch of pussies with no aspirations, which, imo, is unacceptable for a professional.
Yet some say where BFS is concerned that he has every right to sit on his contract. If he has any professional pride he would want to play somewhere. The manager does not want him, Jose is proud, there is no way he will change his mind. I agree they have no aspirations. Rojo just doesn't seem to want to go. I think if an Italian club came in for Darmian he would go. He is not a bad player, just doesn't suit what we want from our fullbacks. Jones will be here when he is a pensionable age and will have spent all that time on the treatment table. Memphis might have to accept he is just not good enough for the PL and Ashley needs to move and take a cut in wages in the process.

Herrera isn't even good as a CM, so much better when he's in front of the back four as his energy comes into use.
This I don't get.
Some say he is fabulous as nr. 6, shite if he's close to the goal. You say the opposite. Some say he's a box to box CM.
The same for Pogba, he should be a nr. 10, he should be a box to box CM, he should be a nr. 6. Nobody can make up their mind.

Where I'm going with this. Nowhere. Jose needs to sort it out, it's just strange there are so many opinions on Herrera's position, it's as if he isn't a master of any.
I thought he was good today and wasn't a problem. Overall team was.

Don't know what to make out of all of it.
Tomorrow I wouldn't be saying stuff like this but what if even Jose isn't the answer? What then. Who do we turn to.
Grim times.

That was an awful game, most of them looked like they didn't even care.

i see some posters claiming that was our second team, but apart from the two fullbacks isn't it actually close to the ideal team the caf wants to see out on the pitch?

Alot wanted and still expect Smalling to eventually phase out Blind, a number of fans believe Rashford's mobility offers us more than Zlatan in the long run, alot believe Fellaini is cack and that we should play a three man midfield with two out of herrera/carrick/schneiderlin pairing up with Pogba.

But our current manager has chosen them for back ups. Why not get behind them it was their first game tonight!

This... Its not like our "star" players were any better tonight.. Maybe we should also sell them!

The hate on the ref is partly justified, but you honestly dont know what it is to be a non significant club. Dutch teams are pretty much ALWAYS at a disadvantage with the ref against teams like United. Psv against atletico is just one example. Give us your budget and you can have the favourable offside call.

We got lucky tonight, but United should batter Feyenoord 0-5 and they should be ashamed.
