EL D Europa League Round of 16 1st Leg

FC Rostov 1:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Thu, 09 March 2017

There's a reason clubs in the Northern hemisphere choose to play on artificial turf. Could maybe have had somewhat of a football game if the ref hadn't been of the same standard as the pitch. Don't think anyone was happy with him.

Decent result tonight, hopefully the players won't be too complacent at Old Trafford and we should get the job done. The pitch was awful, you could see on tv how bad the ball was playing. As for Rostov, I've seen better football from the six a side team I play for, they were so bad.

Are Phil Jones or Chris Smallling actually capable of heading the ball to someone on their own team? They don't even seem to try. Sometimes they don't try to head it anywhere at all. They'll just nod it back into a potentially dangerous area and hope for the best. Does no one else find this infuriating? I mean, anyone can head the ball to where they DON'T want it to go. These two are suppposed to be professional centrbacks at one of the biggest football clubs in the world. They shoudn't perform like two blokes who'd piss you off if they were in your Sunday league side.

I know the pitch was bad but you know, get on with it. We set up and played as if we were deliberately trying to make a point of how bad it was. I get compensating for the conditions but there's a line between that and being self defeatist or just plain childish about it. We were more or less walking on the line. At times our players were just punting the ball up the pitch without even looking when there were good opportunities to play out on the break instead.

Rostov have lost once in their last 24 games at home

Last 17 away games - 2 wins, 6 draw and 9 losses

Very good result, we went and scored an away goal and that was probably the most important thing. Disappointed to concede the way that we did, people slagging off Phil Jones after one mistake is a bit OTT but then again the caf wouldn't be the caf without the idiots.

Slightly off topic but, seeing that pitch and hearing the excuses really makes you appreciate men like Best, Law and Charlton and the things they were capable of. That pitch would have been a carpet compared to some of the bogs they played in.

Match-day thread was funny. Jones fans blaming Smalling and Smalling fans blaming Jones.

It was Jones who reacted slowly and stayed in keeping him onside. OI thought Romero probably could have come out quicker and gathered but ultimately it was Jones at fault. I still think he is probably our best centre half though so i think we can forgive him one mistake.

We made way too much out of that pitch. Yes it was terrible but if you build up something that much you make it into more of an issue than it is, should have just gotten on with it instead of suggesting the game be called off, what nonsense.

Good result overall, beat them at OT and we're through, can't ask for anymore.

Was an expected result, no injuries being the key thing to look out for, we'll beat them 4/5-0 at our place.

Only caught the first half as I underwent surgery before the second half started. But I think 1-1 is a fair result. Should be able to smash them at home. By the way, that pitch was like the equivalent of the Etihad's seats yesterday.

I'd have taken a score draw before this match so can't complain too much. Annoyed to concede but an away goal/score draw in Europe is always a good result. Let's do the job at home next week. As long as they don't beat us or draw 2-2/3-3, we will be through. Beat them and we are through.

OK result. not too happy but I'm fine with that. With a shitty pitch like that, we dont get any injury is the best. and I'm surprised about Mkhi, so he can be very physical and some Rostov players got knocked out by him. second leg will be interesting match and we should be able to beat them.

Agreed! I finally got a score dead right (also got the 4-0 against Wigan ) and yes, I like to think we've got more than enough to take them comfortably at home next week even with some rotation.

Never was going to be a pretty match. I doubt any of their home games have been on that pitch, but playing on it regularly has got to give them a significant advantage over most teams; and their record proves as much.

Now bring on feckin' Chulski!

Away goal, no injuries. Got the feck out of there. Pretty satisfied.
The ball was bouncing, so much wind that fks were flying high. Even players seemed to be bouncing off the pitch while falling.

Well, I was about to watch this match in full until my brother spoiled the result for me, but in the end, I'm kind of glad that he did. Hopefully the return leg is much better in terms of the quality of football.

Worst game all season.

I'm not happy with the result though. We've made it hard for ourselves. Yes the pitch was terrible but we should have scored more than one goal. Its like we said "get the away goal and get home"... That could cost us in the 2nd leg.

We need to win this trophy. Simple as.

Also Jones and Smalling again... Sigh. I'm just fed up of complaining about them to be honest. Once again, one of them costs us.

Everyone looked scared of playing football and I do not blame them , that pitch was horrendous!

Important away goal, the clean sheet would have been ideal obviously but we are a clean sheet away from progressing.

On to Chelsea now!

I looked at Romero nailed on the spot not moving. Felt he could have closed the Rostov player down and made the finish more difficult.
Possibly, but he isn't close to being our first choice, so I'm more than comfortable with him making such 'errors'.

Jones and Smalling have known each other and playing together for almost their entire senior career. Their partnership is quite woeful all things considered.

typical against such teams. But otherwise I agree with the post.

and something else. The positive thing is they lost 2 important players before the 2nd leg. They will fight at Old Trafford as well and this won't be easy.

generally, there is not a lot of glamour when you play thursday evening in russia. so the performance is ok, i guess. the problem is: there is hardly ever a lot of glamour and entertainment when we play.

Away goal, no injuries, mission accomplished!
Now, let as take a look at this game from another angle!
We have a draw with a team that won Bayern! There for, we are better than Bayern!

Just imagine if Rooney had played...his touch would've been exposed even more!

But we drew with Arsenal at home who lost to Bayern 10-2 on aggregate. :p
Don't think that's the point he was alluding to.

That team have only lost to AM at home and did beat Bayern Munich, which must have been a huge shock to the arrogant bastards.

Not a great match but Jose picked a team to do a spoiling job on a poor pitch against a team of competitors.
Wasn't quite job done but I strongly fancy us to give them a hiding on our pitch
