EL D Europa League Round of 16 1st Leg

FC Rostov 1:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Thu, 09 March 2017

Considering the state of the pitch and our congested fixture list, 1-1 in Russia is a decent result, especially in a knockout stage. Puts us in a great position to progress and we were able to rest a couple of key players as well.

What a shite game, though. If United weren't involved, I'd have switched it off in the 15th minute.

I dont think 1-1 is a great result. Its decent but nothing more. They are more than capable of scoring 1 goal at OT.

Not bad result and trip to Russia is always tricky. We should do them at OT.

One of the worst football pitches I've ever seen.

Result should see us progress.

That's what I'm afraid of. We should go all out on them at OT and try to score first to open the flood gates.

Good result especially as we avoided injuries. Not much to complain about here and we'll beat them at home.

Let's talk about the referee instead. Had there been even 3 minutes continuous play the whole game?

I am proud of the team hard conditions with a fierce atmosphere, People need to remember that only last year we would of lost that game.

I am also happy that we can match teams in size and power now also.

MOTM. Fellaini this is why we have him when you can only play one way and not mix it up you become liverpool.

I thought a score draw was what Mou wanted so that was ok. Complacency may be our greatest threat at OT, otherwise can't see us not going through.

Well yeah, the result is nothing more than decent, but we're in a great position to qualify given our goal away from home.

Besides, Rostov are fecking useless away from home and will be without a few key players as well.

Only 72 hours after Chelsea game, can see no more than 5 or 6 starting both games-DDG, Valencia, Bailly, Pogba (shouldn't but will) Herrera and Mkhi

I genuinely felt no connection to that whatsoever, so convinced was I that I was watching some masochistic retro replay of an old European Cup tie from the early 1980s on some niche digital channel in the mid-900 numbers.

We drew did we? Good'O.

would have definitely taken that result going into it. the fact we got a goal and no injuries is all that matters.

i have zero interest in "how we played". this wasn't a match, it was a chore to tick off and we got it done.

Sorry but you're talking out your arse. The Old Trafford pitch was never even close to that bad. Even when the grass was patchy the surface was flat and didn't cut up the way this pitch did. That would be right up there with the worst playing surface I've ever seen, at any level
I don't agree. Ball still bobbles when there's chunks of dirt sticking out of the surface.
I wouldn't call that flat.

Happy with a score draw away from home and even happier we didn't have any injuries, considering we played the match on a BMX track.
We'll absolutely pump these bullies at home though so bring on the 2nd leg.

very useful game against complacency. The pitch, the ref, the opposition was all wrong )))

In fact it was obvious it would be difficult even to draw and the last 15 min I thought they'd score the second. We need to learn to fight against solid and resisting teams till the end. They don't have stars but they are organized and smart.

Micki, Fellani were good. Zlatan gave a genius pass but otherwise not seen. Pogba was running around but efficiency is very low. The defense is as usual.

Happy with that.

Absolutely shocking game, but we all knew it would be. Russia on a Thursday night on what was essentially an allotment.

Fellaini edges MOTM, he did his job solidly. Referee seemed bent on stopping the game every 30seconds, and playing football was impossible. No injuries, an away goal, and 1-1 going to OT next week. Lots of first teamers rested or not having to go into second gear.

I saw nothing from Rostov to fear next week. We'll beat them fairly comfortably, 2-0 or 3-1 would be my guess, I don't doubt we'll advance.

Onto the next one.....

No surprise with the 'disappointing' performance. It was a game of ball bounced-a-lot with that crazy pitch. Jose did well setting up the team for the game and our players did what they could given the conditions. Important thing is we came out of it unscathed, both injury-wise and result-wise.

Didn't feel like a competitive fixture. More so, didn't feel like football at all.

The pitch was disastrous but I felt that it was strange of Mourinho to abandon the football altogether and try to outmuscle Rostov, considering that they don't play football well but all are tall, strong and competitive.

Thank God there were no injuries.

And  at everyone who panicked after that stupid BBC hysteria.

Missed the match, did we play 5-3-2?

BBC have a history of publishing bollocks about Central and Easter Europe.

This, surprised at how negative some people are being.

Those players also learnt their football on the streets. Players now go into academies early and play on surfaces like a snooker table, the top players hate this sort of surface.

however, the pitch did not prevent Fellani, Zlatan and Micki to score a brilliant and a very technical goal. We end up drawing this kind of resisting teams back home as well. The only difference there we complain only about the ref and opposition. I can assure if we'd create 3 more moments like that we 'd score all 3 of them.

Felt bad for missing the game (first I've missed all season) seems I didn't miss much :wenger:

Decent result. Will be a bit of a situation if they score early in the return leg though

I'm kind of glad I fell asleep right at the beginning of the game and didn't wake up till it was over. Sounds like it was rubbish.

Rostovs 2 best players suspended for the second match - should be a walk in the park

More positives than negatives from the game:
-Got to rotate a good majority of players
-Away goal
-Minutes for Mkhi on his return (and goal)
-No injuries (it seems)
-No suspension for next leg
-Didnt lose
-Rostov look to be missing 2 key players for next leg

As most said, all things considering, its a good result and sets up nicely for the home leg.

Didn't even bother watching the second half tbh, it was that bad!

Good result.

Pitch condition is being exaggerated beyond belief. Old Trafford used to be a fecking plowed field right about this time of the season. Yet we've played many magnificent matches on it.

Different times though, different class players.

Nah mate OT used to get patchy and mucky but never as bad as what we played on tonight. That pitch tonight was like playing on polished concrete, it was hard as a rock and people were slipping everywhere.
