We are so far away from having a chance in this tournament, it’s not even funny. You either go for the kill with your best team, or you rest the players and field the hungry reserves - which automatically opens up for a loss, but still our team should be better kind of way. We go out with a mix of players not being sure about each other, offering 80% and losing. I hate losing because of players not even trying.

Take out Martial and put old Zlatan out there in the middle? I love Zlatan but come on, it’s either striker or nothing. At one point a long ball was met by Zlatan, but at the same time Lukaku was doing the same 10 meters up. Both big lumps, both playing with their back against the goal a against Basel - what else did you really expect Mourinho? In the end we just became incredibly slow and easy to break down. Zlatan, Lukaku, Fellaini and Matic all in central places - by far the slowest chain in the CL tonight.

Lukaku - what can I say? He offers absolutely nothing except scoring goals. The kind of striker weaker teams have, but would just never, ever get a chance at a better team like Barca, Real, PSG etc. A few years ago I belived Benteke was better (and Belgium agreed too), I still can’t see much between them - except for the fact that Benteke is crocked. Not goot enough for Man United unfortunately, but we’re stuck with him for a long time. We’re Man United and will always create chances for the main striker, even Giroud and Llorente would have had 6-7 goals against the teams we have met this year.

Worrying that Mourinho endorses this Lukaku-Zlatan combo as well, it will never work.

We can’t finish 3rd surely anyway? Head to head record between each 2 teams is all what counts now. At least I thought so.

Essentially, we’ve beaten Basel 3-1 on “aggregate” so no matter how many they win by or we lose by in the last games, it won’t affect that head to head record. 2nd is the worst scenario.
Head to heads are used to decide tie-breaks for any number of teams that finish level, whether that's two or three or four.

Head to heads are determined by goal difference first, then goals scored second.

If United lose 6-0, we go through on equal points, equal goal difference, but superior goals scored.

We'd need to lose by 7 or more goals to go out.

Harsh post.

Some people need to calm the feck down.

Head-to-head goes first, which means that Basel can't overtake us as we've got a 3-1 GD against them in the head-to-head fixtures. In order for us to not finish first in the group, CSKA need to beat us by four goals (or by three while scoring 5 or more) at Old Trafford.

Has it changed? I thought it was h2h, then goal difference and then goals scored.

United have mathematically qualified. Shame we’ve got as much chance of winning the CL as Crystal Palace have of winning the league.

Don't think Jose going to endorse it in the league anyway, however he has try lots of things.
If you remember how much we suffer previous season because we don't have that box striker, that's exactly why we need some like Lukaku he can scores 20+ goals in the league.

Thank god I couldn't get to watch the match on tv but just commentary. Yes, We do have problems with
secondary full backs and in a few other positions but I think we have good things to look forward to with the recent return of pogba, fellaini, rojo and Ibra. At the moment they are still not bedded in but it should be better going forward.

7 changes and should of been 4 or 5 up at half time at least. Its not as bad as some are trying to claim.

Sucker punch was almost predictable. In the CL you dont take your chances you'll get punished.

The players stopped trying But this game won't matter at the end of the season. It might as well have been a pre-season friendly to bring the likes of Zlatan, Pogba and Rojo up to fitness. In fact, for the first two, it pretty much was.

Don't think we have

Currently in the top 3 "mini league":
1. Man Utd - 6 points, +5 GD
2. Basel - 6 points, -1 GD
3. CSKA - 3 points, -4 GD

If we lost by 5 goals, CSKA go top and we finish 3rd. If we lose by 4, we finish 1st and CSKA go second. Lose anywhere less than that and we finish 1st and Basel finish 2nd.

Obviously the mini league won't come into effect if we don't lose or Basel don't beat Benfica, we'll just qualify in that case.

This might really affect us in the league. Now we have a serious game sandwiched between Arsenal and City and it did not have to be after we put in the hard work of winning the first 4 games. We will qualify and win the group but the league games against Arsenal and City will be affected by this. Very annoying.

We didn't in the 1st. That's a fact. Game consists of 2 halves.
If you're defending another shocking Jose performance then I really feel sorry for you.

Going away to Basel and playing like that is disgraceful. He'll do the same throughout the season and people will still find a way to defend it.

£300M spent in the last two windows to have a team playing like that. Not good enough

This game will be forgotten once we pass Cska, just like the 2 losses in the Europe League group stage last season and many other meaningless losses in group stages in CL overall.

It's a game to talk about for 1 or 2 days then we'll never remember it again.

At least we can't get PSG in the next round. They're going to walk this comp.
We can get however, Real, Bayern, Juve or Athletics. Interesting

Head to head is used for ANY AND ALL teams level on points, not just two out of three.

If United, CSKA and Basel all finish on 12 points, you wouldn't be able to separate out the games the three played against each other. There would be no such thing as only a head to head between only Basel and United. You'd have to count the CSKA games as well.

If at half time jose did the math and realised we are basically qualified i can understand the drop in intensity. More important to conserve energy and not get any injuries.

Oh right, that makes sense.

This forum is going down the pan. Half the people on here won’t ever accept Jose so it’s just the same old nonsense arguments week after week. These people don’t contribute anything. No discussions, no decent content, just morons logging on and saying “sack the manager”, “Jose parks the bus” and “Jose doesn’t play kids” regardless of the result/performance.

I’m convinced most of them are just too stubborn to admit that all the crap they said about Jose when he was at Chelsea was just sheer jealousy

Right I get it, so mathematically yes it is possible, but realistically it will never happen.

Nah he's right, you've had a shocker in here.

Let's sack our manager when we've just won a league cup and Europa League; we're second in the Premier League and through to the knockouts of CL.

Christ.
2nd rate competitions.
United are not competing for major titles and Jose is afraid to compete with decent teams.
You can say I've had a shocker all you want.

Yeah what's that got to do with Jose. ?
Nothing.

Jose out

Terrible attitude to the game, terrible performance, poor result. Not pleased.

If Basel beat Benfica away from home....
  • We lose by 7 goals we go out... H2H GD: MU -2, Basel -1, CSKA +3
  • We lose by 5 goals we finish 2nd... H2H GD: MU 0, Basel -1, CSKA +1
  • We lose by 4 goals we finish 1st... H2H GD: MU +1, Basel -1, CSKA 0

You dont need to feel sorry for me.
This was a nice exchange but I dont want to do it anymore. You're just repeating the same old, boring stuff. not to mention the immense kneejerking.

on the plus side Rojo is looking good and Pogba got more play time. The downside the full-backs were shocking and Lingard still plays for us. I saw Darmian crossing to the stands when i believe it was Lingard put him through on a clear path while he had bodies in the box, i don't even know how managed to do that.

Did well in the first half. Shocking in the 2nd. It's seems as we're very poor without Pogba.
