It seems you are a Jose apologist.

He set that team up to defend against bloody Basel. His in game management was shocking today and the subs were woeful. He is so desperate to show us all that Zlatan and Lukaku can play together
Defend?
In the 1st half we defended. Ok.

So, Jose Mourinho isn't good for Man Utd? Who should he manage? Wolves?

Not mad as European away games have been a mixed bag for us the past few years.

However performance of some of our players is cringeworthy when you realise many of them were part of our 'best' 11 just two years ago

Judging by some of the posts on this forum, I would guess that we got knocked out of the CL today. Did we?

Cska can, Basel can't. We are through unless they have changed the rules this year
I think Basel can still overtake us given the wording of the tiebreaking.

However, if my interpretation is wrong, and the tiebreaking procedure stops as soon as there's a winner (CSKA) then reapplied to the other two separately (Us, Basel) then Basel cannot overtake us. But I think the tiebreaking applies to all teams at once even if CSKA are the clear winners.

Sometimes in football you win, sometimes you lose.

Tonight we lost.
Losing is not the problem. The problem is the manner in which we lost. How on earth do you explain that second half? I can accept losing if we gave everything and left nothing out there but what cannot be accepted is losing games because of poor attitude and commitment.

Lads we were too open to be set up to defend and play for a draw. It would have been like Liverpool if we were playing for the draw. What happened was attitude. We dropped it while Basel upped it.

If we were playing for a draw he would not have brought on Zlatan.

We need to lose by 6 goals against Cska to go out.

regardless, we are not through yet, and have not sealed top spot in our group (which, usually means an easier match-up next round)

No he didn't.

Bad sub cost us here

No right winger and darmian consistently overloaded for the last 15 minutes

I get the need to give zlatan minutes but not for changing shape
Lukaku is not a right winger what is the obsession with every fecking manager we have had including fergie playing players out of position does my head in

We now have to get a point or we may be out

Controlled the first half without looking too threatening until Martials 2 late chances, second half was abysmal.

Another dross performance. 1st half 6.5/10 2nd 3/10. Devoid of ideas and backs to the wall defending again second half. Imagine if we qualify and meet PSG!

Fair enough, yeah the second half was dire. First half we could half we could scored 4.

Ah ok. I guess it's when the players are asked to just basically snuff a game out the joylessness of the task leads to the opposition gaining momentum and eventually the players just start losing concentration and/or interest.

That's what I've seen a few times this season.

I just think with the resources available, we should be doing better. Even in dull games, just that 10% more spark, that 10% more creativity.

Who cares? We ONLY need to avoid a 5-0 defeat against CSKA to win the group:

Code:
          P      GD        Points
United    3      +5           6
Basel     4      -1           6
CSKA      3      -4           3

That's the head to head between the 3 teams. We're 3 points clear in the overall table. So, in order to finish third, we'd need to lose 7-0. In order to finish second, we'd need to lose 5-0.

The next game is still a dead rubber.

We can’t finish 3rd surely anyway? Head to head record between each 2 teams is all what counts now. At least I thought so.

Essentially, we’ve beaten Basel 3-1 on “aggregate” so no matter how many they win by or we lose by in the last games, it won’t affect that head to head record. 2nd is the worst scenario.

Meh 1st half was fine. Shite 2nd half, irrelevant result. Not a great confidence boost tho.

Disappointed by second half display rather than result. Very laboured. Same old cycle we go through - that’s what worries me.

How many “kicks up the arse” do we need? Gone down this road before - need to pull our socks up on and off the pitch. Would just like to see consistency in our performances for once.

It's football. Sometimes you lose matches. Stop losing your head.

Can't beleive the comments regarding Jose's subs.
He made good subs.

The issue is that given the quality of players we started with in the second half, we vastly underperformed.
Basically we were playing fairly catiously but we did nothing up front on the occasions when we did attack.

regardless, we are not through yet, and have not sealed top spot in our group (which, usually means an easier match-up next round)

First, to secure a first spot we need not to lose by 5 goals at OT to Cska, we're through, relax.

Second, we're going to qualify first and may get Juve/Bayern/Madrid. There're some pretty tough options to get in round of 16 regardless.

We were decent in the first half and could have had 2 or 3 goals, but we switched off completely in the second half and once Pogba came off it felt like we were just trying to see out a 0-0, the 2 fullacbks were utterly dire, no threat in attack and both way too slow at covering ground.

7 changes.
No wonder posters say Jose doesn't rotate when they ignore little stats like those and treat these games like its our first choice 11 out there.

I'm not hugely surprised by the performance of the team that played the 2nd half

Hererra looks like good cover for matic as a DM, but theres zero chemistry or partnership between them and having both on just feels redundant mostly.
Hererra was never particularly amazing going forward but he's regressed pretty badly last 2 seasons as a more attacking midfielder imo.

I hope were not going to make a habit of throwing ibra on at 70 mins while leaving lukaku on.
They're both good strikers but i just cant imagine them working together and it hasn't so far.

Nice to have Rojo back, our full backs are a bit crap etc.

This is simply not true we pushed a striker to right wing and their goal came from a 2v1 down the left where no one tracked their wing back. It happened about 5/6 times after the sub of zlatan. Very obvious

I went to put kids to bed at half time thinking this was in the bag. Come back and we lost. Wtf?

He did not play for the draw. If he played for the draw we would have drawed. We were far too open in the second half to be playing for the draw. Playing for the draw would have been like we were against Liverpool.

Basel upped it in the second half and we dropped it. At the same time we were attacking too much. He should not have brought on Zlatan. We would have drawn if he had.

Just means now we have to put out a strong team in the last match instead of resting players.

I saw absolutely no indication of any attempt at attacking play in the 2nd half. So if you did, you’re lucky, I wish I did too.

No, head to head between Basel and us would only apply if a-d didn't determine our ranking:

If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied in the order given to determine their rankings:

a) higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question;
b) superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question;
c) higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question;
d) higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question;
e) if, after having applied criteria a) to d), teams still have an equal ranking, criteria a) to d) are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the teams in question to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria f) to l) apply;

Look on the bright side - this should guarantee a bigger crowd for the last match than if we'd already qualified.

What does pushing a striker to the right wing have to do with us getting overcrowded on the left?

Madrid would probably be the stiffest.
