CL L Champions League Group A

FC Basel 1:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Wed, 22 November 2017

It's a good lesson for the team going forward in this competition. One bad half and you get punished at this level.

I am still fuming over this.. I just can´t get my head around this, if this game was just a formality why not give the young players the time? And if it was just getting a point why not get three and go for broke? These changes that Jose made make no sense at all and Lukaku playing the whole game while being on of the worst players on it does my head in. I am not pissed we lost but just how we did it.

I think you forgot the spelling of me, edit the post and type M and E instead of Y, O and U. Every manager loses games but that doesn't mean they should be fired. Maybe you can tell us who to hire after firing Mourinho, maybe Woodward should hire you, can you do a better job that Mourinho?

No he shouldnt hire me , lets get that out of the way and its not on the basis of last night either.

I dont want Mourinho as manager playing for draws in every away match. Basel are shite and any club like Man United, with aspirations to win the competition, should be putting these teams to the sword. Fu*king Basel. Huddersfield are shite and we lose against them. Stoke are shite and we cant muster a decent performance. Liverpool are in defensive trouble and Jose goes there terrified and plays negative crap that you would expect from a Brentford side going to avoid a hammering. United havent been scintlating in years - its a constant grind.

His football style is shite to watch - not entertaining and he is not getting good enough results to challenge for the league. We were well beaten by Chelsea despite the narrow score line - barely beat spurs and shit the pants against Liverpool. Havent even played Arsenal or City yet - these our the main title rivals and we are terrified of them.
City are a million miles ahead of United becasue they have a good manager and they buy decent players - they didnt have it right last year so they sorted it this year - what did Jose do?? A shit CB that we didnt need - and didnt address the full back or wide positions. United have money. No excuse there.

All well and good winning a couple of 2nd rate cups but its the league and european cup than United should be looking to challenge for. 2nd in the league means feck all - especially in November.

Unless 2nd in the league is now the accpeted standard. If thats the case then woop de doo. Success.

May I remind the Mourinho out clowns on here that even your Sir Alex Ferguson lost to Basel in the CL?

Played well and battered them first half. Fellaini and Lukaku should both have scored, Martial unlucky with his chance and on another day Rojo's effort deflects in rather than onto the bar.

Second half we were really poor but still should have been professional enough to see out the game and get the point.

Positives - good attacking display first half
- Rojo looking good returning from injury
- Romero
- More minutes for Pogba and Ibra

Negatives - Lazy second half display
- Darmian
- Darmian
- Darmian
- Darmian
- Herrera still really struggling for form
- Darmian

United didnt score so the attacking was left wanting in the 1st half... so thats hardly a positive.

May I remind the Mourinho out clowns on here that even your Sir Alex Ferguson lost to Basel in the CL?

Let me remind you that he also won the league multiple times and Champions league twice so he gets a pass.

Anyway the comparison is pointless - Ferguson is retired.

Maybe I didn't word it the best but I'd say the attacking play was good enough but the finishing was poor.

Lukaku should have scored, Fellaini should have scored and Martial was unlucky. That's 3 good chances plus like I said on another day Rojo's effort is deflected in rather onto the bar. Could easily have been 2 up at half time.

Fair enough I suppose for the 1st half -

2nd half - well thats a different story

Another pointless statement.

Louis Van Gaal won a CL. Still a negative manager
You are pointless. Ferguson had negative games as well in his career. So?

People like you who moan about Mourinho are quickly to forget that others lost too against lesser teams, including Ferguson who was beaten by Basel and in that year didn't qualify for the R16.

We were just unlucky - one moment getting caught out defensively cost us.

We had loads of games like that under SAF - UCL away games tended to be dull affairs, just trying to scrape a win or take a point in a hostile atmosphere.

If it's 0-0, then we top the group, rest players for CSKA - happy days.

But we fecked up. Take it on the chin and the reds go marching on.

P.S. - get fullback shopping NOW woody!

2nd half - well thats a different story

The second half was woeful, I'm not trying to deny that or really find any positives in the second half because there weren't any.

Stick even one of those chances away first half though and it's a completely different game second half.

Only watched the 2nd half, and it was poor: sloppy, careless loss of possession on too many occasions. Darmian is a liability. What a chance to have put the likes of McTominay, Shaw and Tuanzebe. What was there to lose ? I believe we missed a hat full of chances in the first half, but hey, in the bigger picture, we're as good as through.....

no baubles are handed out this part of the season...............

Well we'll be in the next round of the Champions League so that's the target achieved. Doesn't really matter one jot how it's done, unless of course you think Madrid's CL win last season is tainted by the fact they failed to beat Warsaw in the group stage and they didn't win their group. If you think 2nd in the league is unacceptable at this stage of the season for a manager 18 months into the job, your standards probably need to be adjusted.

People need to relax a bit.

It was hardly a disaster. I was at the game last night and it may have looked different on TV but I never really felt like Basel were battering us or anything like that. As other posters have said we could have been 2 or even 3 up at HT. We werent. Thats the way it goes. We then get done by a late goal, of which we have been on the opposite side of the coin many times over the years.

Keeping in mind that Basel had to win to effectively stay in the competition its hardly surprising they came at us a little bit more.

But we had 74% possession in the first half and 68% overall, hit the woodwork twice and should have scored at least 2 more.

some of the reactions on here are priceless.

Could have, should have, would have means feck all. United, always taking the difficult route. Sure, we can essentially rest players between Arsenal and City and still come out first but form is habitual and we need to be putting teams like Basel down.

One step forward, two steps back the past month and a half.

People keep repeating CSKA game is between Arsenal and City, we don't even need to draw ffs! We need not to lose 5-0 to secure top spot. We can even send U21 team and they will do the job.

We'll still rest players easily.

We have to take that game seriously and not rest our players who'll have to play 3 games in a week. Injury scare, fatigue will creep into them by the end of the week before city game which is crucial for title race.

If we loose and all 3 teams have 12 points what decides first spot? when head to head record will also be 1 each?

I'm not sure I get what you mean. You're stressing that we have to take this game seriously, then you call for us to rest all our players?

Because that's what I'd do. Rest the entire first team if possible. We could put Fred the Red in goal, trust me, we're through as group winners.

The only positives for me about last night were that Rojo looks to be back to something like his best as Left-side CB and Romero once again proved he is an able deputy for De Gea.
The rest of it in terms of performance wasn't just disappointing is was uninspiring, our players strolled around in first half believing they were totally dominant, but it was not because they were good, it was because Basel were in defensive mode throughout. At half time Basel decided to have a go at us and had us on the back foot throughout second half, they deserved their goal and their victory, we needed a kick up the backside and once again no leadership on the pitch!

We went to win the game and get through, and instead lost it by playing for a point in the end.

Some better finishing and we would have been in complete control by half-time.

I think its fair to say most of us are pissed in the manner we lost and not that we lost

Better finishing , And need to build up better too. If martial made better off the ball attcking run inspace pogba could have put him one on one against the keeper but he keeps staying wide.

Maybe little bit more negative approch in the CL finals of 2009 and 2011 might have yielded a different out come.

The whole game reminded me of us under LVG. Spend half the game passing the ball about with absolutely clue why, then when that doesn't work, spend the other half of the game doing nothing at all.

Jose even did the LVG thing of sabotage substitutions, where anyone doing anything useful is hauled off...and then inventing some nonsense afterwards about how we played well for a bit of the game (even though we didn't) so it is ok.

Can only think he just didn't think the game was very important, which is fair enough I guess, but no point trying to hide how terrible an all round effort it was.

- When you pay attention to Blind the thing you notice is that he has this uncanny ability to make ANY situation he's involved in, into a problem. Meanwhile on the other wing, you kind of expect that if Darmian was told to tie his own boots or put his own shirt on before a game, he would just never emerge from the tunnel (which ironically would probably be an improvement in his level of performance)

- I still don't know what Fellaini is actually supposed to be doing in most games. He's been here nearly four years and no one even knows what he does. He is good at heading the ball into the goal but he is often in the team to do things other than this. He is also good at elbowing people in the face but this doesn't seem like a productive reason to pick someone to play.

- Herrera now only seems to be able to do two things: 1) go to extraordinary effort to pass the ball back towards his own goal...he will do this EVEN if it means passing it to someone on the other team instead of a team mate. 1) Spending the last 20 minutes just booting the ball in whatever direction he is facing as if he is worried it is about to explode.

- Your best player in a game probably shouldn't be someone who literally hasn't played football in about 8 months.

- Our highlights in this game included playing an accidental one-two with the referee, and managing to take some corners correctly.

We need to improve and be able to put teams away when we have the chances like we did in first half. Some of our players are just not good enough and need to be shipped out. They have had enough chances.

Are you suggesting the shower of shite displayed yesterday didn't warrant negativity?

Yes I am

It was a glorified training game. In fact, I actually felt that game was a typical “Utd under Ferguson game”. We clearly couldn’t have given less of a crap about it and the main objective was to get in and out without any injuries

We earned the right to do that because we won the first four Group games

Mour,
"We didn't score in the second half probably [because of] the fact that we know one point is enough.

"Probably [when] at 75 minutes, 80 minutes we didn't score, so it is not time to try to win, it is now time to try control and in the end we lost.

If this is the logic behind the dismal performance then God help us

What do you mean?

Ita true, our players still have the mentality of retreating in the final stages of a game. Many seem to have forgtten this was a problem under LvG although i was hoping Jose would have eradicated it by now especially given the change in personnel.

We lack leadership on the pitch still. Though Ibra's arrival would have spurred them on but alas no

By looking at the results in the games played between United, Basel and CSKA.

If we loose 4-0 Cska will have better head to head record than us, we have better head to head against basel and basel have a better head to head than cska.

Than it comes to overall goal difference where basel needs to score 4 goals to have better tally than ours , so its not in our hands if that happens, and that's how i started this argument.

So you are saying Mourinho should win every match and should have 100% win record? SAF also won many matches by grinding out results.

We are 2nd in the league and it's not even over yet but that is not good enough to challenge for the league? Wow. So Manchester City have already won the league? Did you forget we dominated the same Chelsea side because of Mourinho's tactics? You are ok with it if we go full offensive against the top teams and lose 4-0? It's easy to say that the manager should make his team play this way or that way but it's much more difficult in reality.

City are a million miles ahead of United becasue they have a good manager and they buy decent players - they didnt have it right last year so they sorted it this year - what did Jose do?? A shit CB that we didnt need - and didnt address the full back or wide positions. United have money. No excuse there.

City are million miles ahead because of their owner who has poured millions into the team. Did Pep Guardiola win the PL in his first season i.e. last season? What did Jose do? Seriously? He signed Pogba, Ibra, Bailly, Matic, kept De Gea, won the Europa League, won the EFL, he is the first United manager to win a major trophy in his debut season. He did all this after the team was in shambles, after 2 managers who ruined the team after SAF left. Shit CB? You must be talking about Lindelof, you declared him as a shit CB after he has played just 9 matches? So all our previous CB signings were instant hits? Did you not notice the number of injuries in defense last year? Yes, United have money but not unlimited money like City. I guess you know exactly how much money the owners gave Mourinho.

I don't even want to comment on the last 2 lines of your post, it's so stupid. You are just a Mourinho hater still crying that we hired Mourinho, you are ignoring all the good things he has done and focusing only on the bad things.

It doesn't come to overall goal difference, it comes to goal difference in the matches played between the teams who finished level on points.

Exactly , But if we loose 4-0 and not 7-0 than cska will have a better goal difference than us head to head of +1 ,we have better GD h2h than basel or +2 and Basel Have better h2h gd than moscow of +1. All 3 level on 12 points.

Than it has to come to other stats by these rules of goal difference in group matches where if basel win by 4-0 and we loose even 1-0 we loose top spot.

the order given, to determine the rankings (Regulations Articles 17.01):[2]

  1. Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  2. Goal difference in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  3. Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  4. Away goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  5. If more than two teams are tied, and after applying all head-to-head criteria above, a subset of teams are still tied, all head-to-head criteria above are reapplied exclusively to this subset of teams;
  6. Goal difference in all group matches;
  7. Goals scored in all group matches;
  8. Away goals scored in all group matches;
  9. Wins in all group matches;
  10. Away wins in all group matches;
  11. Disciplinary points (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points);
  12. UEFA club coefficient.

We earned the right to do that because we won the first four Group games

Ferguson's approach to CL group games was a legitimate cause for criticism and ended up getting us knocked out (by Basle, ironically) in his second from last season.

I agree it wasn't a vital game in the position we're in, and the team selection and substitutions reflected that, but that shouldn't mask how terrible the performance was. It showed what we can expect if we pick up one or two injuries again.

Slow to start first half but in control and finished it well and with a bit of luck could have scored. Second half came out a different team, sloppy, not concentrating. the only players I would give credit to were Martial, Romero, Pogba and Rojo who was my MOM , you could see him trying to rouse the troops and getting exasperated in the 2nd half. The full backs were poor and Blind fell asleep for the goal.

Fortunately this game is the one game we could afford to lose.
