Does it really matter ? he used squad members due to the games every 3 days we got now, till end of December.

Should have blown them away first half. Yes full backs are an issue which he will address.

We still need a point at home to finish top, or not lose ridiculously at home, to not qualify
at all.

Dire boring football
But the first half. Have you forgotten it already? The game was only a few hours ago.

Making things tough for ourselves would be drawing to PSV at home and needing a win in Germany against Wolfsburg to qualify, while some clueless eejit subs on Nick Powell for Mata when we are chasing goals. Now, that's asking for trouble.
This is a good point. I think an nice analogy would be to compare us to Spurs in 2015-16. They had good form all season until they lost to Chelsea ending their title chance and then they capitulated and lost a lot of their last games. Do we judge them on before the capitulation, when the games mattered, or after it, when the games didn't? I'd say the latter and i'd also judge us on the 4 games out of 4 we won at the start of the group.

Can't believe that question is even being asked? Have we stooped so low as to now accept mediocrity in such a blase fashion?

It was embarrassing how a side like Basel came out with intent and all our response was to lump balls up to Lukaku then Ibra. Herrera,Darmian, and later on Blind were so poor as to make the Basel full backs look like Roberto Carlos and Cafu.

I wouldn't read too much into last night. Dead rubber game where we rested half the team.

Are you sure? We have to not loose the last game sandwitched between arsenal and city fixture where we could have secured the qualification and rested a lot of players before crucial crucial city fixture.

It was a complete bottlejob performance.

We can lose it, which we won't. They have to beat us 7-0, if not we're going through. When we're 6-0 down I'll start getting worried, but until then we'll be fine.

The biggest problem of yesterdays match was the attitude. It is not acceptable. This attitude is something Sir Alex could never allow.

Darmian and Blind were really bad, yes. But we hit the post two times, the ball was kicked out just on the goal line, Martial couldn't beat the goalkeeper and Lukaku with a miss alone against the goalkeeper. Something that doesn't happen for first time this season to him.

I think Lukaku has to try harder on training to play one on one versus De Gea and to try pass the ball into the corners of the net instead of kicking with full power (like in the match with Newcastle). He needs to show more class in front of the goal.

I am a bit disappointed with Herrera. I really like him but yesterday he didn't show that he wants to fight back for his place in the first squad. His every touch was a guarantee that we will slow down the attack. He was not playing with his first touch. Always had to stop the ball, make a second touch and then pass to right or left, without trying to make lethal pass forward.

Mour,
"We didn't score in the second half probably [because of] the fact that we know one point is enough.

"Probably [when] at 75 minutes, 80 minutes we didn't score, so it is not time to try to win, it is now time to try control and in the end we lost.

If this is the logic behind the dismal performance then God help us

We have to take that game seriously and not rest our players who'll have to play 3 games in a week. Injury scare, fatigue will creep into them by the end of the week before city game which is crucial for title race.

If we loose and all 3 teams have 12 points what decides first spot? when head to head record will also be 1 each?

Not sure how Jones and Bailly stop that goal, unless they are playing fb positions.
They could choose right positions to block a shot or they couldn't let that long boal to reach a target. Honestly, I'm not 100% sure they wouldn't let Basel to score that goal cause they already conceded unnecessary goals last matches. I think this is symptomatic for our defence though we do have a great defence. At first this problem was detected in the game v Stoke.

You know what it's like on here. A fecking meteorite will be hitting us after we lose.

Yeah, I was expecting to see a lot of "this was meaningless game anyway" posts on here but instead I stumbled upon people divagating how likely we are to progress to the next round.

We are through and we will qualify from the 1st place, there's absolutely no way the final outcome will be anything other than us in the first place.

We don't have to take the game seriously at all. We can rest our entire first team and there is no danger whatsoever that we don't finish 1st, unless you are absolutely mad and think that it's somehow possible that CSKA Moscow win 7-0 at Old Trafford, against any line up we put out there. Our U19 side would not lose 7-0 at home to anyone.

This is my major beef. The CSKA game is sandwiched between Arsenal away and City at home. We should have been in a position to rest a lot of players.
And we are in position to rest a lot of players!

We have to lose 7 fecking nil to get eliminated! Do you really think that we will be in danger of shipping 7 goals to CSKA if we rest our key players?

We would have to lose 4-0 to even be in danger of losing 1st place.

Worst case scenario, even for a severely weakened team is maybe a 2-0 loss to CSKA and that is absolute extreme.

That’s because we had no one else. Carrick Young Romero Powell McNair Borthwick-Jackson and Pereira were our bench options. Powell was funnily our more experienced attacker (assuming Young is a FB now)

strangely last night loss, did not annoy me , it made me laugh.
It looked like we just went out to get the point we needed and it backfired.
We are still in the knockout round, so no big deal, but the way we played in the second half was shocking.

Why 7-0? Basel have +4 goal difference and we have + 8 , while cska moscow has -1. If basel win by 4-0 and we loose even by 1-0 their goal difference will be better than ours. As head to head we will be equal goal difference can put us in second spot too we dont have to loose 7-0.

Yeah. No.

This forum is going down the pan. Half the people on here won’t ever accept Jose so it’s just the same old nonsense arguments week after week. These people don’t contribute anything. No discussions, no decent content, just morons logging on and saying “sack the manager”, “Jose parks the bus” and “Jose doesn’t play kids” regardless of the result/performance.

I’m convinced most of them are just too stubborn to admit that all the crap they said about Jose when he was at Chelsea was just sheer jealousy

Are you suggesting the shower of shite displayed yesterday didn't warrant negativity?

H2H comes first. We won 3-0 against Basel, they only beat us 1-0. Basel can’t finish ahead of us, only CSKA can if they batter us.

I stayed away from this thread yesterday because I was sick to the stomach in anger at the late winner.

Looking at it with a calmer head, I think our game plan for the XI picked was good, we had enough chances in the first half to bury the game and played good football at times.

The second half was just awful, had we been playing a better team we would have been embarrassed. Apart from the subs I didn't notice any major formation or tactic changes. The loss for me is all on the players. How do you expect to challenge for top honours when the squad players outside of our XI are cowards and drop the heads at the first sign of pressure?

It's an unpopular opinion but Lukaku is not good enough for Manchester United and yesterdays displayed showed that. He offers nothing bar a goal here and there. The bulk of his contributions coming from games we were already winning against poor opposition.

Lingard should be no where near the team even as a squad player. He wouldn't start for the majority of the lower league teams.

Positives Romerio was good with no signs of rust and likewise with Rojo. Rojo in fact was my MOTM, brilliant tidy player.

We vs Basel 3–1
We vs CSKA 4-1*
Basel vs CSKA 3-2

So I think Other criteria apply if all of us are on 12 points

No. If all teams have 12 points, head to head between all interested teams apply.

We need to lose by at least 5 goals I think. Definitely 4. If we lose 3-0, we willl 100% finish 1st.

To be honest, at 4-0 down I'd start getting worried. 6-0 would be panic mode.

I think you forgot the spelling of me, edit the post and type M and E instead of Y, O and U. Every manager loses games but that doesn't mean they should be fired. Maybe you can tell us who to hire after firing Mourinho, maybe Woodward should hire you, can you do a better job that Mourinho?

no idea how you can control a game so completely, look totally untroubled and then take your foot of the gas. pretty stupid all round and though Jose's substitutions were a bit odd and certainly badly timed. should never have pulled Pogba off. once again I though Lingard flattered to deceive and once again thought Smalling simply is not good enough. Only pliuses: fellaini had a really good game, as did Rojo

The amount of panic in this thread, you would think we are playing Barcelona or some other strong team to concede more than 4 goals. Please calm down ffs, there is no way CSKA are going to score more than 3 goals.

Played well and battered them first half. Fellaini and Lukaku should both have scored, Martial unlucky with his chance and on another day Rojo's effort deflects in rather than onto the bar.

Second half we were really poor but still should have been professional enough to see out the game and get the point.

Positives - good attacking display first half
- Rojo looking good returning from injury
- Romero
- More minutes for Pogba and Ibra

Negatives - Lazy second half display
- Darmian
- Darmian
- Darmian
- Darmian
- Herrera still really struggling for form
- Darmian

Are you suggesting the shower of shite displayed yesterday didn't warrant negativity?

There is a difference between negativity and panicking, even I'm annoyed that we lost but I'm not asking Jose to be fired. No manager or team is 100% perfect. Mourinho can't do anything if most of our squad players are shit, I know he can give chances to younger players but then if we lose people are going to say that Mourinho shouldn't have selected that player/players. Either way you guys will find a way to blame Mourinho.

Yeah we'd be out by 4-0 loss to moscow.

the order given, to determine the rankings (Regulations Articles 17.01):[2]

  1. Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  2. Goal difference in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  3. Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  4. Away goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
  5. If more than two teams are tied, and after applying all head-to-head criteria above, a subset of teams are still tied, all head-to-head criteria above are reapplied exclusively to this subset of teams;
  6. Goal difference in all group matches;
  7. Goals scored in all group matches;
  8. Away goals scored in all group matches;
  9. Wins in all group matches;
  10. Away wins in all group matches;
  11. Disciplinary points (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points);
  12. UEFA club coefficient.
Very difficult to sort out.

Or second i guess.

If not Then what is true?, Its certainly not 7-0.
If Basel win at Benfica then we do need to lose 7-0 to be eliminated and end up in the Europa League. A 5-0 loss in this scenario would mean finishing second.

If Basel do not win at Benfica, then we are through. In that case, a 4-0 loss would see us drop to second place.

Your post made me laugh also. I said the same thing. I don't think Mourinho minded much either, just said it was strange that we lost after creating so many chances in the first half. I think it's like the EL semi-final last season where we didn't wrap up the tie in Vigo. Jose said after the game at Old Trafford that he could expect a difficult game in the return leg.

2nd half was a massive borefest after a first half where Basel had their arses handed to them. Fullbacks were the problem.
No pace! However, I would say to the "Mourinho out" posters that SAF didn't win a trophy until his 4th season at the club and the title came in his 7th season. Mourinho needs more time to get the players he wants in.

How did you reach that conclusion?
