FA W FA Cup 3rd Round

Manchester United 3:1 Everton

Post-match discussion

Fri, 06 January 2023

Felt to me that the players know City and Arsenal are coming up, and they already have one eye on those matches.

Sloppy against Everton but I think United didn’t show them any respect, so they played open and without fear.

But job done! another win, onto the next match.

We looked a bit tired/leggy I thought - which led to a general sloppiness throughout the game. Thank feck Rashford was up for it... basically one us the game by himself.

Everton were due a response and sort of gave one - definitely put in the effort but the quality was still a bit naff. I do like Damarai Gray though, always have ever since he came through at Leicester (remember he scored an absolute worldie against us at OT for them) and thought he was the clear danger man. If he sorted out his end product so it was consistent he'd be a top player.

Also, Ben Godfrey is a bit of a knob. Also, was pretty refreshing to see Ben Godfrey not moan/protest at the penalty award.

I thought Everton played much better tonight than many expected although we should have known as they always raise their game vs us. Can't think of too many easy wins over Everton recently. Weird how they can put such a shift in away at City and Utd but then be so pathetic in games against the weaker sides.

I thought we were a bit sloppy but you can't be great every game and we still deserved to win.

Rashford is in incredible form. Lovely to see.

Did DeGea have Vodka in his bottle instead of water?? i mean wtf was he thinking

I only watched the first half but it seemed to be one way traffic with us camped in their half and Everton getting a couple of break always. It almost felt like they were down to ten men with how good we were at getting the ball back from them and keeping them penned in. I thought we pressed well and were really well organised. My only complaints would be the reluctance to shoot and over complicating things around the box. I thought everyone played well but Martial really needs to start scoring, he had several decent sights of goal.

It was closer for comfort than it should've been in the end, the offside on their 2nd was extremely tight and we got a bit fortunate there. Ultimately in knockout competitions it's all about progressing and we managed to do that.

We need to get better at taking chances early and putting games to bed though. We could've put it beyond doubt by half time on another day.

Get in there.

Probably a bit more difficult than it needed to be but job done.

Am I the only one who thought their gola was more arm/shoulder?

It's a cup game, stakes are different, performance could have been better, but it doesn't rearly matter because we got the job done and in a cup game, that's important.

We lacked quality against a low low block. We were pedestrian and had no ideas. Let’s not forget how utterly shite Everton are and how bad we must have been to concede so many chances to them. Antony and Bruno just awful.

we won but our recent run is against really poor opposition. I’m not seeing anything to suggest we take city.

Much is made of our lacklustre attack but I don't think our midfield balance is right either. Casemiro needs a quality, mobile no.8 playing next to him. Eriksen is too pedestrian and McFred are obviously crap.

A player like Enzo Fernandez or Bellingham in that position would really take us up a level.

As an older member on this board, Martial reminds me of Bobby Gould without the work rate, his touch has been awful and his shots lack power and mostly direction.

The need for an actual No 9 , is reaching a critical point, and Martial unfortunately is not the answer, the side has more cohesion and looked more dangerous playing 3 wingers across the front.Time has come to be honest with Martial, whatever the question, he is not the answer.

Could mention McTom, just don’t ‘now what he adds, doesn’t have even Fred,s energy, so until he becomes a centre back, he will continue to struggle.

Nice to get another win. Hope we can step up and beat City or Arsenal or both soon.
Rashford won us the game, he’s on fire.
Really think we need at least a stop gap striker this month though.

Thought it was a healthy match for us. The hype bubble burst as we're not really that good. We're getting better. We're more confident. Given this was a first choice XI lineup (bar Martinez) it did show that we're a striker short - Tony is a bit like a Firmino without the aggression and team work, but good link up. Had a few chances in the first half and he looked like Ighalo. And Eriksen - class as he is - offers nothing defensively in the middle. He won't win one 50/50 and he's not mobile enough, while Everton fielded some physical monsters there.

Antony continues his poor form in possession. He's far too predictable and he's too slow in his movement at the moment too. Held up one of our counter attacks by labouring too much.

Great result. Hope Bruno's and Martinez's knocks are easily overcome.

Thought this was the worst we have played although still better than Everton. 7 wins on the trot now.

Wasn’t able to watch it. Antony getting on the scoresheet is good and hopefully he can start banging a few in take some burden off of Rashford.

De Gea making a mistake like that. Probably nothing, but we’ve seen before sometimes he goes on these error binges. Before going back to being himself again. So hopefully this isn’t one of those times.

Ten Hag MOTM tonight: proactive subs and reacted well tactically. No ego, accepted needed 5 at the back and get McFred on to park the bus.

Disagree. He pushed his luck putting Shaw at CB again and he looked very off the pace on the goal and the disallowed goal. All of the CBs are fit so this was a poor decision and we almost paid the price of a replay for it.

I swear you lot watch a different game to me sometimes, so negative

Made hard work of that after a great start. A better team would have knocked us out. Antony, goal apart, was dreadful. A defenders dream being one footed and on the wrong side of the pitch. Bruno wasn’t much better and Casemiro had his worst game in a long time. A few need a rest before City so hopefully ETH rotates for Charlton, but not many options on the bench given suspensions and injuries.
Happy to get through though.

A job done performance against an opponent fighting to regain respect. We can and should quibble about the goal we conceded, Antony still leaning too hard on the same bag of tricks and maybe even Martial, who's still a bit too anonymous, but we saw outstanding performances from Rashford in particular, but also Varane, Shaw and Casemiro. More improvement is needed, however, but nights like this are part of the bargain.

Deserved the win, Everton do tend to be difficult to break down when they play bigger teams and we didn't create as much as we have been against them but we got the job done with 3 goals.

Im hoping Anthony will improve but for 90mill I'd expect more from him. Every time he got the ball, he either stepped back inside or passed backwards. Id like to see a winger take the ball to the byline and cut it back (like Rashford did). At the moment it seems like we overpaid for him

We did overpay and we knew that. Ajax didn't want to lose more players so his value to them was inflated. If we want to be fair to him we can't judge him by that fee.

All that said, he's probably a 60 million player at least and I'd expect a bit more excitement from his performances for that price.

Good win. Not thr best performance but the players may be a bit leggy with so many games. I also feel their eye may hwve been off the ball somewhat with it being an early cup round against a struggling team. So I'm very happy with the win in that context.

Rashford continues to be on fire. Absolutely loving it.

Tough physical game but deserved win.

Rashford MOTM by a mile. He's carrying our attack at the moment with Martial doing just alright and Antony (who played well) but is a bit inconsistent at times. Need a striker because we're playing a risky game with all these fixtures.

Well don't moan about who Erik picks then

I'm starting to get concerned about the number of chances we give to opposition. Bournemouth had some, Wolves had some and today, Everton also had lot of joy. We just can't play like this against City and Arsenal. City will just take us to cleaners.

Having Martinez & Varane together should hopefully reduce the chances we are giving away

I don't think i've ever done that . I just think we need to buy/loan in a striker to take the pressure off Rashford. I'd take Depay at this point.

Yeah so would I,hell maybe even that Aboubakar could give us a different dimension because Martial isn't delivering enough

It was a fun game, felt like we didn’t really take it too seriously. Could’ve scored a couple more, but whatever. Onto the next!

The main takeaway for me is that we need to make better decisions in the final third. Too often we shoot when we should pass or pass when we should shoot. Rashfords confidence seems to come with the caveat of being a bit greedy at times.

If we are to take another step forward our front men have got be more clinical both in terms of scoring their own chances but also in turning chances into goals by making the right passes. In short we need more tap ins.

I wouldn't be against the idea of playing Martinez at DM in some "favourable" games like Tuesday night. Let's face it we haven't got the money to sign someone now.

We played some fantastic, high tempo football - well deserved win. This team would be title contenders with a class striker

Good - next year we can have a proper go. A cup and top 4 should be the aims this season (and Glazers out toohopefully)

Rashford is playing like prime Ronaldo. He looks dangerous everytime he was on the ball. He carried the team.

Antony is too left footed. EPL defenders watch a few of his video clips and it was easy to mark him. Just don't let him cut to the left because his right foot is basically useless. He should learn from Rashford and Sancho playing at the wing almost 2 footed. Even Garnacho looks more dangerous. It's still early days but he needs to improve many aspects in his games to justify $90M price tag.

Martial blows cold again and shows why we desperately need a better striker.

Our attacking 4 - Rashford, Martial, Antony and Bruno, only Rashford was playing well and basically give us the win.

We were sloppy in possession but still deserved to win. Can’t understand comments saying we are far off, we were lucky to play poor teams, it is a reality check etc. We are playing like a top 4 team and deserve to be in the position we are in, if not higher. No team in the world plays consistently good football week in week out, especially when you play every 3 days. Our fans should learn something from our manager, he is so calm and composed irrespective of how well / poor his team has played. We are in a good path to becoming better, can’t become Champions overnight.
