Everton 0:3 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sat, 17 October 2015

He was poor. Gave too many easy passes away and one resulted to an Everton chance. He knew this. Second half, he was extremely cautious and some point you could see he was even afraid to pass the ball.
It's funny how people can see different things watching the same game isn't it? If your statement was a summary of the whole season I would agree with it. I thought he did better today. Much room for improvement but he didn't give the ball away every time he touched the ball (which he seems to have done in other matches). He did a lot of good things IMO.

Turd performance combined with class pass and a goal. Call it class or turd, have a bit of both tbh.

If it's a tight match giving away the ball 10 times in a game can get you dropped long time if his name is not rooney

Let me put it this way, If everyone played like him today, we would have lost the match. We won that match because of the hard work of the defenders and midfield.

One of our best away performances! A complete team performance is what it was and it is difficult to single out a player who was poor. Some might say Rooney had a poor game with loads of lose passes and giving away the ball far too many times but I think the confidence is slowly coming and that goal might have come at the right time with a tough CSKA game and City coming next.

  • Ander Herrera needs a consistent run in the team. If LVG stuck for so long with Memphis and continues giving Rooney a game, he definitely can give Herrera one.
  • The back 4 looked solid. Rojo might have been brash but he is that kind of player. Needs to control his emotions and put that in the game. Still feel there is a fear of red card and a penalty whenever he is playing. But I think he can really start putting some good performances at LB in the absence of Shaw. He has been consistent enough for the national team.
  • Talking about back 4, Smalling - Jones is the partnership we should stick with and I just pray they stay injury free now. Really hoping Jones comes back to his old form and with Smalling to compliment him this could be a solid CB pairing we have been waiting for sine long. Smalling continues to be in beast mode!
  • Schneiderlin had a good game and was more involved this time as compared to what we have seen in the his few performances. Looking forward to see him do his donkey work and breaking down play. That is what we got him for!
  • Bastian is Captain Cool in all aspect. Love his intensity and passion for the game and great to see him getting into full fitness
  • Martial is a so fecking cool under pressure. His hold up play is something we have been missing for quite sometime. Sucks defenders on to him leaving more room for others. His control of the ball is insane and can't wait to see the GIF of that play where he went passed 2 players before having a shot on goal at such a tight angle.
  • I was quite happy with Lingard performance. Looks like him and Perreira will get some more run-in in the EPL and the League cup games. He was quite lively. (Perreira - done. Lingard - done. Now give Wilson some game time LVG!!!)
  • Mata had one of this off game but considering how consistent and useful he has been for us in the last few games, we shall let this one slide.
Still not going to get my hopes up high. The next two games are quite huge and an uphill task. CSKA are top of the Russian league with 8 points ahead of the 2nd placed team and have a good squad.
Looking forward to some gritty performance from our team!!

I think our defence has shown we are fine with your typical 9s like Lakaku, Benteke and Kane but the smaller faster strikers like Aguero and Theo even cause most issues....but then not sure a defensive line that can deal with both exists.....
Nah, I think we can deal with those kinds of strikers as well, but only as long as the tactics are right and the midfield works correctly (see City game from last season as a good example, and Arsenal game from this season as a bad one).

Cheers:
  • Ander fecking Herrera
  • Chris fecking Smalling
  • The luxury of being able to sub in Carrick for Bastian
Jeers:
  • Not being able to celebrate Ander's goal because I was mortified by the sight of Martial rolling around on the ground
  • Still worried about our lack of depth in forwards
  • Imagining this squad playing like this with a healthy Luke Shaw.
Can't wait to see Shaw back as well, but tbf Rojo was excellent yesterday too.

Wonderfully game yesterday. It was like death by football. :p. Hopefully we continue this against City. Wonderful performances by our back 6. Jones had jitters initially but once he got his confidence he was a rock. His passing isn't Blind level but it's good I thought. Rojo Schneiderlin Herrera smalling was good too. Rooney wasn't brilliant but he wasn't bad. Up against John stones can't be easy for anyone yet he got 2 1v1 with Howard couple of runs where he had 2 defenders onto him.

That was a vintage DM performance by Schneiderlin. My favourite kind.

We are shite apparently. Only won because Everton were emotional today and we were mediocre at best.

Reminds me of when Fergie was manager. "Oh they may have won the treble but, they lucky and rubbish"

I feckin' love Martial. I wish he was in the game more though.
They way we were playing when we were in front, he should have been in the middle. I know Rooney scored one, but Martial could have had three in that position. Rooney just doesn't fill me with confidence in those situations anymore.
And... I feckin' love Martial.

The big difference from previous games is that van Gaal got the "selection" and tactics spot on. The Herrera - Schneid - Schwein midfield was the key to this win.

More than you love @Scarlett Dracarys?

DDG - as always rock solid.

Darmian - the bit of rest has done him good. Immovable object defensively and showed glimpses of attacking play.

Smalling - brilliant really. He needs to spend some time with an attacking coach as he always looks so startled when he carries the ball forward and realises hes almost in the opposition area.

Jones - played well especially on his first game back.

Rojo - solid defensively and showed Blind hes not the only one who can pass from the back.

Schneiderlin - his best game for us. As good defensively as ever, but he looked a different player on the ball.

Schweinstieger - seemed in his element. Covered by Morgan and free to run around fishing for passes.

Herrera - strung things together and showed why he should play every game. We are so much more direct and effective with him on the pitch.

Martial - not since Ronaldo have we had a player who can just glide past players the way he can. Could do with a goal soon but otherwise looks like hes been here years.

Mata - he was actually a little quiet in his effective but efficient way.

Rooney - showed glimpses of the good and bad of his game, but a step in the right direction. Cant help thinking if that was Aguero or even Martial who broke away in the second half it would have been 4.

The big difference from previous games is that van Gaal got the "selection" and tactics spot on. The Herrera - Schneid - Schwein midfield was the key to this win.

Spot on. An obvious statement, but a midfield hitting all the right notes is vital. Herrera was outstanding and I hope Louis wrote it all down in his notebook.

Smalling was a close second for MOTM for me. Martial didn't score but be breeezed past Coleman at will.

Just a solid, professional win over a decent Everton most of us were anxious about.

No wonder lvg ships all the usual suspect. I cant imagine cleverly, anderson, even rafael playing in a tactical play like last nite. The amount of movement they afford to provide options males things look simple while it doesnt.

Many teams looks very disjointed at attacking be cause all they know is defend, pass accordingly and make runs.

Rooney is still the odd cog in the weels though

The key was the midfield. Schneiderlin with freedom to cover the defence how he pleases (ie without Carrick getting in his way) keeps us solid and allows Schweinsteiger to roam around picking passes and moving the ball. Herrera is also the best we have at that position.

I expected another tame defeat in this match, much like the result last year. Instead United put on a very solid display, fit to win an away EPL game against anyone but the best. Despite some errant refereeing, Everton barely got a sniff and I think we created enough chances to win by an even bigger scoreline. Herrera's inclusion was key, as was dropping Memphis. Every attacker (save Rooney :annoyed:) looked dangerous.

There was freshness in the team with half the team having had a good break. Inclusion of Schneiderlin in tough away games is vital.

Defeat at Arsenal was due to LvG's team selection. Today was role reversed. Credit to LvG for picking the right team and learning from that game.

Didn't see that coming!

Smalling amazing again!
The 3 man midfield everyone wanted
Herrera just fantastic
Martial excellent even tho wide left.

I'd like to switch Martial and Rooney as Rooney really does do well helping out the fullback even tho that's not what he wants to be doing but Martial is simply better upfront and the future of our club in that position... I suppose Martial does offer us that pace from wide left though so maybe I could handle him there for a while.

Memphis. The guy has got a great future with us. Hopefully he works his arse off in training now to get back in the team and to perform at a very high standard that we know he will in future.

Again what an amazing performance and result at one of our toughest games every year
Liked what I saw too and I concur that Rooney is the one who should go to the left with Martial up top but I think Van Gaal reasoned that we'd lose width if we went with Mata and Rooney on the flanks. If Rooney goes out to the left then Mata has to make way for one of the wingers to avoid making our attack too narrow.
The performance itself was top notch and if we allow this line up, fitness permitting, to really gel by playing it consistently then it's difficult to see many teams matching or even think of outplaying us.

Van Gaal got his selections right this time which didn't happen at the Emirates. United as a team played pretty well. Questions still remain about United will fare when a team really sits deep against them. They've got the chance next week to lay a marker down when they play man city.

Terrible game from our view, nobody performed and players that have been solid all season had an off day. It happened to you against Arsenal and it happened to us this week. Shit happens.

Excellent team performance, everyone played well, MoM between Herrera and Smalling but just gave it to Smalling who was virtually faultless.
Watched the first half live , had to go out and watched the second half at midnight. Enjoyed the match so much watched it all again this morning.
LvG got the tactics spot on

Good performance, and Herrera really has to start at 10 for me, easily the best player we have in that position.

Still not overly impressed with Rooney, had a poor game by comparison to the rest of the lads. His goal wasnt finished well, it was put straight at Howard and he got lucky that Howard dived too early. MOTD said Rooney knew Howard liked diving early but its utter tosh, even if he did know that, he wouldnt but it straight at him, he'd lift it over or summet. He simply got abit lucky.

He also proved how damned immobile he's become, twice he got played in to an acre of space and couldnt reach the area before other had caught up 15-20 yards to make a challenge. The chance he pulled back for martial and another where Martial played him in down the left side, if Martial or pretty much anybody with an ounce of pace was in his place, he gets 1 on 1 with the keeper without the centre backs getting close. he looks like he's about to fall over himself if he ever tries to reach a decent running speed.

He's still got disastrous control and a poor short game too. Apparently LvG benched Memphis to spur him on. Needs to try the same with Rooney, and quickly so he can find out if it will work of if Rooney is simply done.

he got the selection right for this game, but other games are different and the same selection won't be correct. vs teams that park the bus vs us, you will want some creativity at LB rather than Rojo, you will want Blind getting on the ball rather than Jones and we might want schneiderlin on the bench where there is no real battle in midfield.

This is the first game in a while where a team has taken the fight to us, so for this game the big strong defensive line and combative 3 in midfield was perfect

I think the best way to play teams that sit deep is to give them some of the ball and invite them on to you to open them up. It does carry an element of risk but if you've got faith in your defence to deal with these teams then it shouldn't be a problem. It's horrible watching a match tick by as United are permanently camped around some teams 18yd box.

Our best performance of the season, a great win as I wasn't expecting to get anything from it because of our record there in recent times. I think van Gaal is getting used to many aspects of the Premier League, I think in his press conferences he has had a tendency to give away our selection and it became predictable at times. On Friday he said both Herrera and Rojo were not likely to play but both started.

Allot of films come in trilogy's, lord of the rings, star wars, nolan's dark knight movies, back to the future, there is a beginning middle and end of a films story, some like the third films some do not, at united we also have a trilogy of midfielders that truly start and end our attack, and VG must pair our trilogy of CM's every week.

Bastian starts the attack brings class to the team, much like the telling
Morgan is the middle guy, where everything happens
herrera brings the cutting edge that finishes our story of how we start and end our attacks.

VG really is lucky to have 3 midfielders like these 3, who bring different things to the team

I wouldn't call that 'luck'. Its not like he ended up with any of them when he came to united. All three are his signings (including, Hererra - if only because he gave the go ahead for the deal after Moyes fecked it up the season before).

He bought them. It's not like he inherited them.

Did VG want herrera? its debatable, he always stumbles across things like this with team formation, and that is what is a concern. He never has a clear indication on what he wants in terms of a system and combinations

Wow! That's really a stretch. If anything, LVG's problem is totally different. He knows too well what he wants, which makes him inflexible.

And no, he doesn't stumble across things that much. It's quite the opposite IMO. The one thing I have noticed about our team is that we can play different 'styles/ tactics' from game to game, without really affecting the overall 'philosophy'. We've played attacking stuff in Europe (all 4 games), and we've played more conservatively in the league.

The only issue with LVG really is that he doesn't drop Rooney. But, if his sticking with Rooney results in Rooney hopefully finding some form, I wouldn't complain.

I do not think he knows his best team of atleast 7 of the 11, arsenal last week was a perfect example of that. I like rotation I think its needed, but to leave out morgan in a game like arsenal, and play a very immobile team was a gamble that did not pay off, I think herrera was injured. But we have gone from memphis playing off rooney, herrera playing off rooney, rooney playing off martial, hes experimented with so many midfield combinations, he needs to find the right midfield and attack, and give it a run of games of 3 or 4. I would like to see bastian, morgan and herrera starting more, see how we do

I think he does stumble across some of these selections at times, like the run we had last season against liverpool, spurs and city. If we do not see the same team practically has against everton, then I am scratching my head on what VG wants from a first 11 in terms of shape and players playing in that system, or what ever system he plays next week

That's why he has the credentials to manage United, because he does not need to know his best team. In his philosophy, the best team concept is a myth as he sets out teams to do specific tactical jobs against specific opponents. That's why he has a variety of players, who can do different things. Carrick + BFS worked wonders at Liverpool, and failed at Arsenal. He came out and accepted that both him and his players got things wrong at arsenal. I would also like to see BFS + Schneiderlin + Herrera more often, but that does not mean that LVG does not know what he wants. Moyes, on the other hand, was a manager who just didn't know what he wants.

Anyway, a team building process requires lots of experimentation. For e.g. Blind has been a revelation at CB so far, and none of us would have seen that coming.

The herrera one is debatable, I think much like last year playing all 3 together is not in his full proof plans, which it should be

Bastian came only because of LvG. Morgan was targeted for months before he was bought especially with Arsenal lurking. He clearly knows what he wants. He chose to pursue only 2 of Moyes' targets. He chose not to buy for instance William carvalho who as per reports were close to joining us. I don't think Ed would have bought players without the managers approval especially for a high price. So he wanted all 3 of those midfielders.

His credentials are not in question, the question is? playing the best balanced team that could win us a league title

I think the spine of the team I feel is very important for any team, I think we all have an indication what the spine is, but VG not sure he knows the full spine, especially in the engine room. I think he knows that DDG, smalling and rooney are part of the spine, but the CB, and the 3 in midfield is still questionable.

I think the potential spine could be what we saw on Saturday
DDG
smalling jones or blind
bastian morgan
herrera
rooney

That could be our spine, but we will see from the coming weeks. I think its crucial he plays almost the same team that picked off everton against city, because that team could run the legs off city in terms of the football and matching them on the field
