PL W FA Premier League

Crystal Palace 2:3 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Mon, 05 March 2018

The first half was as disjointed and disinterested as we've looked all season, even when we got back to 2-1 I felt we were still struggling to really create anything, in the end some great determination and comnposure from Lukaku and a stunning strike from Matic have saved our bacon.

Not quite sure what to make of that.

Started both halves terribly and most of the first half was dire. In the first half the defence was terrible, McTominay was awful, Sanchez tried but lost the ball so many times. Pogba started as if he was wearing ice skates. Matic was poor, Young was poor and Lingard took his invisible pill again.

Second half, conceded the goal by falling asleep but Rashford injected some urgency and we looked much better.
After Shaw and Mata came on we completely dominated although the set up was weird. Lukaku kept his cool for the 2nd goal and Matic brilliant winner.

Why do we have to be 2-0 down to start playing, always reactive instead of proactive?
Why do we always try for the difficult pass when fast simple passing is more effective?

Can't decide MoM but buzzing that we won that when I was fearing the worst at 2-0 down.

Vintage United for about 30 minutes there... brought back some good memories. Cracking goal to finish it off too.

I have no idea what the first hour was all about.

What it was about was Jose's caution. We are a much better team when we have some urgency and have to make something happen. He's programming this team to "not give anything away". This often means we don't really play until we have to. The last 30 minutes show what we are capable of as a team if we have a bit more courage.

His caution is holding us back. You can't just start playing in the second half and it shouldn't take being 0-2 to get going. Are we going to wait until the second half v Liverpool. I bloody hope not!

So I'm still very , very critical of his approach. I guess I'm not going to be accused of jumping on a defeat?

Defence were shocking. Bailly has to come in at the weekend. Pogba was also terrible in the first half, looked like he had forgotten how to play football. Whole team switched off for their second goal and DDG getting beaten at his near post again. But great character from the team to come back and win it.

I think the team is switching off from the Premier League, now that even Mourinho, who's always extra careful, recognizes a 9 point advantage to 5th is good. The focus is already in the Champions League and FA Cup.

That second half of football (Palace's 2nd goal apart) is the way we should be playing all the time. We showed urgency and rather than just lumping long balls forward like we usually do when we're behind, we passed the ball forward with purpose. Hopefully Jose learns from this game and realizes that we are better when we take chances. What's the point of sitting back if we are going to concede anyways. This reminded me of the old days where if you score 2 we will score 3 or 4. I also think that Rashford has earned himself a chance to start the next game. He made an instant impact. With that being said, Pogba and Sanchez were awful...

I had really started to doubt that this team had that kind of character, to come back from a really difficult situation.

Very glad they proved me wrong.

So much wrong with that performance and the result only serves to paper over the cracks.

Even the attitude. Between minutes 80 and 90, after the equaliser, we just pissed about. 87 minutes in and Sorloth and Benteke were simply still beating everybody in the air while we struggled to string a couple of passes together.

Lukaku's attitude is tremendous, and Mata made a difference. But the rest were absolutely horrible, in just about every aspect.

I find it very disingenuous that lots of people are now assessing their merits as a supporter based on what is effectively a last minute winner. The groupthink would be hugely different without an individual wonderstrike from Matic.

The major plus point is that Champions League football should be just about secure. In part because Chelsea make us look a little like City by comparison.
FFS.

Excellent comeback but 5.7 total average rating for the team. That sums it up. Poor first half, several poor individual performances, yet a great fightback.

Went from total anger to pure joy by the end of the match. Think Mata should always play... at least until we get a lead then we can use someone stronger to hold it.

I'm tired of the Lindelof experiment... I assume we have no choice but he's been involved in too many unfortunate situations for me to hold him blameless.

A late win like that should boost everyone at the club! Nice going into the LIverpool match at the weekend.

I screamed at the top of my lungs, spilled my bear all over the sofa and woke the the missus up in the process. She came down, saw the sofa, freaked out and then refused me access to the bedroom tonight. Now I have to sleep downstairs. On the bear-stained sofa.

True story. :nervous:
Tonight's body heat will embed that beer smell in the couch cushions forever more … it's OK though, the beer farts should mask the main problem!

It's a turn of phrase used to demonstrate how shite Chelsea are with a reference to another good Premier League side. How, out of that post, that is what you consider an important point to take issue with is simply staggering.

Well... there was good spirit & good energy but big parts of that were awful. Even at 2-2, DDG's fantastic save kept us in it.

Think some of you are getting a bit carried away, tbh. Sorry, :(.

6pts from behind in those 2 games is very handy though & now has us 9pts clear of 5th with only 9 games left <--- (to end the post on an optimistic high, :D)

Happy given the circumstances; coming back from 0-2, played badly, Matic's strike was a stormer, and the heart we showed augers well for the run-in.

That said I was dismayed with how disjointed we looked in attack. The passing was slow and safe far too often but when we tried to up the pace/risk factor the ball inevitably went astray. I got sick and fecking tired of us eschewing a decent out to the flanks with Young and Tony V in favour of balls into central areas where Lukaku, Lingard, Sanchez or Pogba would be overcome back to goal by three or four defenders. I can only think the way we continually ignored the wide pass was a tactic from Jose, who must have thought after the Chelsea goal we had the cuteness to play through packed defences. Not on this showing.

The positives from this game for me are Lukaku, who showed a great deal of quality in how he waited for his opening for the equaliser and I was impressed with how well he did throughout with the scraps flung his way, Matic who carried the midfield single-handedly and scored a blinder and the heart we showed at the end. The football itself was poor, I would say worryingly so, but for now I'm happier dwelling on the almost Fergiesque grit and determination we showed to get the win.

What a fantastic second half performance. We look like a completely different team when we push up high and press.

And what an absolutely beauty of a strike from Matic.

Here's the stats showing the difference between our two halves:

@Rado_N @Handré1990 I won't hide at all. Delighted with the result obviously. Fair play to the lads. I stand by what I said in the thread, wasn't at all knee jerk on my behalf, been feeling this way for a long long time. Obviously I respect anyone's opinion who goes against mine. I haven't enjoyed watching us for a long long time. I started supporting United for the style of football they played (family full of Liverpool fans) and it's been a while since they've entertained me on a consistent basis. I should have mentioned that I'm done with jose, not the team (and I still am with Jose). I'll support United no matter what the results, or the style, but i suppose I'm entitled to disagree with the direction the club is going. As is any fan who disagrees with me of course.

Anyway great fight back win, great character shown by the lads! Enjoy!

I think it was the very definition of that today:wenger::D

It’s all in good fun anyway, mate. In my mind you reverse-jinxed the feck out of that game! I mostly keep away from the caf during matches, today your thread looked rather foolish though, wouldn’t you agree? Next time it’ll probably be me;)

What is the name of that wanker of a referee? Fecking disgrace, every decision went their way, even the foul for their second goal was pathetic.

Can we have a 'deffo not the man of the match' award ?

I vote for Pogba and Alexis. Sort yourselves out lads, preferably before Sunday
Like they just said on Sky, Sanchez would be getting dropped if he wasn't named Alexis Sanchez.

As for Pogba, we don't have any other options in midfield. Two class new midfielders needed in the summer.

That was the icing on the cake. Idiotic, city-adoring, negative, and ill informed. Otherwise it was brilliant. This team is Manchester United. And I loved that game, competitive, gutsy, full of incident. We played reasonably well for most of it. Palace were great. They really put it up to us, but gradually, gradually United imposed themselves on the match. Buzzing after that, and don't want to listen to rubbish.

Pretty much same-old from what I saw. Sanchez all over the place, Pogba ineffective.. fecking delighted we showed the balls to come back though - these are the performances teams are made with. We're nowhere near good enough, but we kept going and got the 3 points we really should be expecting from a relegation battling team.

I won't read too much more into it. I have literally no idea what the Liverpool match will be like.

Oh it absolutely looked foolish. If I managed a reverse jinx on it them i'm utterly delighted! ;)

As soon as McTominey commited himself to the colours of Scotland he is now playing like a Scot.....Shit!!!

Yes and taking the free - at least I think so - before the ref gave the go ahead.

When Matic lined up to hit that I just knew it was going to go in.

Ok, I lie. I actually groaned and went "Nooooo" :(

'YEEEEEESSSSS!!!'
Haha, I was already on a rant why he would shoot from there

McTominay was abysmal. Sanchez makes something awesome 20% of the time, 80% he loses the ball. Pogba was awful in the first half.

Why do Smalling and Lindelof make such dire mistakes so often? I mean they're each due for 1-2 every game. Rest of the game they were solid. Shaw instead of Young was good.

Impressed by the comeback though

I remain proud to be a member of ''Still 2nd Crew'' though, :D.

I can't imagine that their albums are much cop, but you can't have everything.

Just rewatching the highlights - we were very unlucky with both of their goals:

- Deflection for the Townsend strike
- Benteke dived in the build up to the second. Hope the cnut is punished for it but I can't see it.

Other than the DDG save they barely troubled him.

Lindelof looked uncomfortable throughout.

Mata changed the game. He's got to start against Liverpool.
