Burnley 0:2 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 02 September 2018

Not read the comments yet, but I assume there'll be a lot of posts claiming Burnley were rubbish rather than United being on their game.
The truth is somewhere in between I feel. Burnley were poor but we never really gave them the opp to settle and play their spoiling/disruptive game and hit on the counter.

We were good but if we'd been more clinical the score could have been anything(to us). It's too early to say that we're back or anything but a win will give us confidence to press on. However, I'm still not convinced Jose knows his best CB partnership which impacts on his midfield selection.

Really encouraged by what i'm seeing from Luke Shaw. The guy is really getting his confidence back. Lukaku is a weird one. His goal stats are great, he got two today yet i still think he's nowhere near clinical enough.

Lovely result. Particularly pleasing was the fact that my TV channel for some reason decided to air the Spurs game and they've been waxing lyrical about them while taking cheap shots about United.

A good, solid away win in a must win game. Hope to see more of it in the future.

Sad to see there weren't more goals and the Rashford incident was just unfortunate. The refs better book Bardsley after this.

Now I just hope we don't get any injuries after the break. Playing an in form Watford away is bad enough. Playing an in form Watford away after the break makes things worse. We never seem to do well after breaks or mid week games. (lack of preparation i guess.)

Decent first half/ not so good second.

Happy that Lukaku got two, and had a good game overall, hope his confidence will rise.

Pogba should have scored that penalty.

Ref had a nightmare, how Burnley didn’t get a red card is a mistery.

Some decent movement in there again, got a feeling we are working hard to improve our attack, hopefully it works.

The big positive was that no one performed poorly. A few good performances from the likes of Shaw, Sanchez and Lingard created enough chances for Lukaku to bag a few. Still some work to do but a step in the right direction against a pretty poor team.

think thats the first really convincing performance we've seen since Spurs in the cup semi final

controlled the game and attacked well - really delighted to see Shaw continue to play excellently and Sanchez was impressive

was surprised to see Fellaini play deep and he had a good game - no way do you play him here in a game we are being pressed hard though as he would get caught out

Lingard's movement is the best thing about our attack at times and if only he had a bit more class on the ball he could be great

Lukaku missed some chances but it's the most I've seen him bully a defence in his time at United - even with 10 men he was creating great chances for himself - surely only a matter of time before he grabs that hattrick

delighted for Mourinho - he's been a prat, I'm someone who would have moved him on after the cup final but whilst he's still manager he will have my support - he's been unfairly treated by the press and has embarrassed himself at times but I'm delighted he can ram their words down their throat tonight

what a great feeling to play so well and win so deservedly - Buckooo is a happy man tonight

Yes!

Midfield pairing of Matic and Fellaini will make us more solid but just not creative enough against tougher sides.

That's not how we should be playing football, we used to have Carrick in that role and now we have a huge lump who can barely pass it five yards sideways, we basically have Fellaini in the role Jorginho is playing for Chelsea, it's ludicrous.
Sorry, but I don't buy it. Fellaini has decent skills. He can pass, dribble, tackle and.... *** chest trap.

Decent win, nothing good, nothing bad.

Shaw - excellent once again.
Lingard - again crap IMO. He has no real control or ability to pick passes. Will get by with scoring goals here and there, but we need a real number 10 who can create in the final third.
Pogba - again inconsistent, why the feck didn't he give the penalty to Lukaku, weren't they best mates or something?
Fellaini - decent game nothing more.
Lukaku - Not convinced by him at all. His touch and hold up play still hasn't improved. Finishing is inconsistent too. He will score 20+ goals I'm sure, but IMO we need a better striker(really have no idea who though).
Sanchez - excellent assist, he should look to combine even better with Shaw.

I think Fellaini only played today because we'd need him for set-pieces, normally I'd like him to be kept far away from the starting 11 but it was a smart choice today.

Fecking Watford managed to outdo Spurs in their own patch, shows how poor we were last week.

Quite amazed to see that Mourinho haters are still trying to convince people that this was somehow a bad performance. I bet some were actually disappointed to see the team win.

We were very good today and pleased to see that we can play like this.

The commentators on my stream were actually trying to blame Mourinho for the red card. It was his fault for winding Rashford up by playing him enough apparently.

That was a must for jose and man utd and ideal just before an international break.

LOL yes. Rashford has been acting like a petulant, greedy kid since last season, still cannot forget when he pointblank refused to pass it to Martial last season and shot for an extremely acute angle. Commentators and pundits will be lining up excuses for him as he is English. He really needs a loan IMO.

I think he is just just trying too hard and that coupled with the lack of maturity is producing poor decision making. I don't think he's petulant. He seems to be caught between wanting to make an impact on a game and wanting to show everyone how good he is, and not having a good enough understanding or experience to know how to do both.

If that makes sense. At 20 you can understand it, but what's important is seeing signs of improvement or glimpses of his game coming together.

The amount of good chances we miss/waste is very concerning. Can't blame the manager for that.

We really need to start putting them away.

That's the problem. He hasn't improved much, in fact he has lost his instinct to score which got him his break in the first place. He is going just the way of Welbeck if you ask me.

Well, he's 20, so it's too early to say either way...but he was doing things even last season that you'll never see from Welbeck.

I think if he works hard enough he'll do ok.

Wasn't someone (@Damien I think?) doing post match quotes thread as I remember seeing it after the first match - whatever happened to that? Loved it and saved so much time and avoided nonsense

I did but don't think it was that popular. I can retry it but not able to watch the post match stuff yet.

Yeah, if Pogba puts in half the effort that Fellaini does in his game, he'll be the best midfielder in the world right now.

Fellaini for all his failings, never lets the team down when it comes to effort. It's the rest of his game that just doesn't meet the standards that we should be having.

True.

I said it was crap to watch, as it was IMO, nothing more or less.

We had 20 plus attempts on goal and 9 on target. Not only this but were still dangerous even with a man less.

You are not a United fan IMO. You are a most likely Chelsea fan pretending to be a United fan.

My memory must have failed me as I thought it was quite popular (or just extrapolating my feelings towards it!). If you can that would be great but only if you have time. Another option would be to create a similar threads to this one after each match but just for official post match reaction so people can post what they find without it being a burden on just you?

Standard.
And from all non United fans, zero accepting the little string of very dodgy decisions that went against us.
Bardsley kick out, and the Mee shenanighans.

Let's pretend Phil Neville, John O'Shea, Darren bloody Gibson to name a few, hadn't featured prominently in our midfield in the past.

He isn't "in that role." He's played there on occasion to nullify the oppositions strength, which he did infactically today. Jose got it spot on today, and Fellaini played an important role in that.

What a load of shit, I've been a fan 30 years, I've been on the Caf through 4 managers, just because I find Mourinho and his football repugnant doesn't change any of that.

The fact we have to cater our game to worry about Burnley is ridiculous, you don't see other top sides setting up differently every week because they are worried about every minor threat every team has, it's why we have zero identity.

No below six out of tens. Good performance, missed a penalty and should have had another one too. Mee stopped the ball with his hand with Lukaku in on goal too. Shaw and Fellaini the pick of the bunch.

That was the most up for it I've seen Sanchez in a Utd shirt.. Still think he'd be better suited to a number 10 role with Martial left, but that's for another thread.
Overall pretty decent attacking football could have scored more, but Burnley are proper poor this season so not to get too carried away but a win to stop the rot before the international break was a must.

Yeah, we never saw Ferguson doing that. :wenger:

Quality control
Yeah, we never saw Ferguson doing that. :wenger:
Yeah, Fergie used to cater our team to deal with relegation fodder, sure he did. This utter horseshit trying to equate this poisonous little narcissist to the greatest manager in history from some United fans is disgusting, and they are usually the ones trying to denegrate the fans not on the sheep wagon.
