LC L League Cup Quarter-Final

Bristol City 2:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Wed, 20 December 2017

I never said it was our biggest problem. But it's still a big problem. You cannot have those two deliver one good game in 3 or 4 and expect the team to win trophies.

They were not poor today. The whole team wasn't good enough, the set and the way we set out play was the biggest problem.

How could we lose when we played Martial & Rashford (the greatest attacking pair in the league according to many on here, & Pogba, who is the reason we haven't been winning lately due to his absence. Three completely overrated players. I think the fame might be going to Rashford's head, as he seems to be getting worse, & Martial only turns it on when it suits him. The manager is most at fault with his negative play.

These two should be ripping teams of Championship level apart. Both are too soft at present and falling down all over the place looking for easy free kicks. Time to man up and start bullying these defenders.

I don't know but for me this cup and F.A cup was the only chance for us to lift a trophy this year considering it's a bit impossible to catch city in the league and it's hard to win the C.L with this team yet, so hopefully we focus on the F.A and give it a real go now, but talking about resting players actually not convincing imho that's their job, they should give their maximum effort every time they are on pitch unlike today. The less is better.

True

But even if it's bit impossible to catch city it's important to keep winning in the league to keep our balance ... and obviously with the team we have playing so many matches in so many competitions could distract us and will end up with nothing but frustration ... but I agree that we have to focus on FA Cup and going as much as we can in champions league

Ashley Young was missed more than anyone. He would have spotted the danger. Not sure why the handball penalty was disallowed. Or Flint's goal. Good job Blind stuck his leg out And Paterson shot over by a fraction. And Smith must Score (1983).

The weird looking guys on Channel 5 highlights show with their awful set are surprisingly coherent and watchable.

Now we're out of the League Cup and we're no longer in the Europa League, what trophy is Jose going to come anywhere near getting us?

Darmian has his bag packed by the front door.

Martial and Rashford were a little clueless and overdid it a lot.

Yet another kick up the arse for some of these pricks.

Shaw was solid, fantastic to see

First things first, congratulations to Bristol City, they were marvellous and thoroughly deserved to win. We can talk about how poor we were etc. but that would be a complete disservice to them. Their players fought until the very end, they've got a good young manager in Lee Johnson who's stock has risen very high in a short space of time. Big fan of his dad Gary Johnson, he's been a good manager in the Football League too. Bristol City will not look out of place in the Premier League next season if they go up and I hope they do.

For all the passion and fight their players had in them, the majority of ours had none. We've done well to clear decks in the last few seasons but unfortunately there are still some at the club (All of which were recruited in the van Gaal era) who are not up to the level we have to be at.

Pogba will make a fine captain one day but what we lack in this team is a real leader, I would deem Carrick as one but unfortunately I don't ever see him playing for us again after his heart problem. Ibrahimovic I also see as a real leader but again he's coming towards the end of his career.

Despite the concerning lethargy from the players it's not a result that bothers me hugely. We've had good runs in this competition but I'd have taken a win Saturday ahead of a win tonight.

Also disappointing is that city could have potentially had two games they'd have had to play first teamers in January, but it likely won't affect them now. Going out with a small silver lining of less fixtures has been cancelled out.

Not surprising is the same posters who have mocked winning the league cup or certainly down played it, now seem to be bothered by it.

Missed the match, just saw the score...:lol: ffs....just feck off Mourinho/dead wood at the club already.... seriously....oh wait I'm not super complain because we are second in the league, sorry.

Good to see Ibra back among the goals.

We're never winning a league title while Martial and Rashford are starting, as harsh as that sounds. Just far too inconsistent and don't deliver enough. Compare them to Sane and Sterling who are on the wings at City, they rarely have 2-3 bad games in a short spell. Our two have them on a regular basis.

because they are wingers and playing at a better team. Also very sadly they play for a coach who prefer to play to the strengths of his players !

Seeing as we’re constantly being told results/league table etc are deceptive and performances are all that matter I’m gonna presume most people aren’t too fussed by tonight’s game? We’ll play plenty of PL teams that will play less well than Bristol did tonight. They were fantastic. We weren’t great but we certainly weren’t bad. Wouldn’t draw any worrying conclusions from tonight’s game tbh.

Should probably hold off on complaining too much since you didn't even see the match.

Nothing coming on a football forum posting up green smileys and suggesting the manager get sacked won't make up for.

Don’t bother mate.

It's not only the players, the coaching is abysmal. Jose not doing himself any favours. Really needs to add to his coaching staff, because our play is so basic. It's not only this game, it's a trend. Surely this is something that is easily remedied?
Yep, we do need some coaches that will help out our attack and the link between midfield as we have been shite in this regard for five seasons now.

Overall we weren't actually total shite weirdly. Lots of poor decisions and lethargy, crap crosses and final balls. Bad loss though, only positive is City having 2 at least 2 extra games. Well done Bristol, good luck against City.

It says something about our performance that their winner should have been ruled out for offside, yet the immeadiate concern is for our sub-par performance leaving us vulnerable to a tight call rather than us being hard done by.

Saw the score, that was enough.

Did you even see the match and our performance?

out of this cup to a Championship side. Our kids get beaten in the FAYC against Derby. Our under 23's are pretty dire. WTF is going on?

This post doesn't remotely surprise me. Now go off to a player thread and slate him

It's okay to be content with losses to BC and draws against the likes of Bournemouth and hoofing the ball against the likes of City...I'm not.

Can't argue with any of the above. I think most of them tried reasonably hard, and we were the better side but just marginally. Spot on regarding Young, but I think that insight will be lost on many in the Caf.

I'm not sure I have the words to sum up tonight. In my time supporting City we have been a yo yo club between the Championship and League One. We cannot compete financially with at least half of the Championship (despite our owner's wealth, FFP rules don't allow us) due to crowd sizes and parachute payments.

Under Lee Johnson we've had to find a different way, that way is buying young players and improving them. As Lee says, we might not be able to have World Class technical players but what we can be World Class in is application and effort. It's been serving us well in the Championship but whilst we beat three of the PL's lesser lights en route to facing United, I hoped we could stand a chance but I didn't really believe we could.

Now I'm gonna sound like a Scouser, this really is our year...hope to see you again next season for the league fixtures

The players should do the honourable thing and donate this months wages to charity as a gesture for non representation of Manchester Utd Football Club in a professional game of Football!!

We seem to have too many players at OT who can't just give an ' ordinary ' performance.

Too many of them who, if they're not having a really good match, just give an absolutey shite performance.

Nights like tonight seem to happen to us at least once each season - but this year we've already had Huddersfield and now tonight.

Worrying and frustrating....
